HOLLYWOOD: TOMBSTONE (1993) Mr. Shipp PLOT SYNOPSIS AND REVIEW Synopsis • Wyatt Earp and his brothers, Virgil and Morgan, settle in Tombstone, AZ after retirement. Here, they join up with an old friend, Doc Holliday. Earp and company have several hostile encounters with the “Cowboys,” a group of outlaws led by Curly Bill and Johnny Ringo. These encounters ultimately turn deadly with a shootout at the O.K. Corral, leaving several Cowboys dead. Wyatt’s brother Morgan is killed and Virgil is maimed by the Cowboys, so he and Doc set out for revenge. They exact their vengeance by killing both Curly Bill and Johnny Ringo before Doc Holliday dies of tuberculosis. Review • I think Tombstone is one of the greatest American Westerns ever made. The acting is great from every actor involved, but especially from Val Kilmer (Doc Holliday) and Kurt Russell (Wyatt Earp). Gunfights are clear and the action is easy to follow. I would absolutely recommend this film to anybody. Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday Sam Elliot as Virgil Earp Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp Bill Paxton as Morgan Earp Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo Powers Boothe as “Curly Bill” Brocius THE WILD WEST ERA • Tombstone is set during the “Wild West,” specifically 1880s Arizona • American individuals reached the West quicker than the federal government • This era is marked by lawlessness and controlled chaos • This era lasted only ~30 years, ending when the federal government fully caught up and expanded west ACCURACY ANALYSIS ACCURATE INACCURATE 1. There was a heated meeting between 1. Ringo likely did not know how to speak Ringo and Holliday that nearly ended in Latin violence 2. Ringo and “Curly Bill” are portrayed as 2. Holliday could speak Latin the leaders of the “Cowboys” 3. Placement of the shotgun under the 3. After this encounter, both Ringo and table Holliday were arrested 4.
