Teacher Materials GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO GREEK UNIT Unit I in the sophomore World History sequence comprises approximately a ten-week study of ancient Greek civilization. The choice of content for this initial tenth grade unit was dictated in part by the students' study of pre-history and ancient Middle Eastern civilization at the Freshman level. The opportunity to draw on students' knowledge of pre-existent civilizations to elucidate certain social science concepts (i.e., the phenomenon of cultural diffusion between societies and cultures) and the traditional historical interpretation of Greek civilizationas the mafn contributor to all later Western Civilization both influenced this selection of Greek historical content. The teaching materials for the unit include: primary and secondary sources dealing with the period from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic period (ca. 1800-)00 B.C.); geography problems; anda number of cultural model problem exercises. The teacher should note that, although the ma- terials may resemble those used in a traditional "primarysource document approach" to history, their intendeduse is only partly to illustrate that good history teaching involves immersing the student in the data of the past in order that he may formulate his own limited generalizations and inter- pretations. Additionally, the criterion for the inclusion of particular primary source materials (and the omission of other "classics")was their usefulness in pointing out certain concepts and perspectives from the social sciences which are to be expanded and reinforced throughout the Social Studies curriculum. Those concepts with which the student should gain most familiarity in the Greek unit include the existence of the universal categories of culture (Economics, Social Organization, Political Organization,Religion, Knowledge, Arts), the interrelatedness of these categories atany given point in time, and the influence which changes in one of these may play in precipitating large-scale social and cultural change.An introduction to the biological (individual genetic composition) and geographical (topography, climate, location, resources) determinants of Greek civilization is also intended. The student is also introduced to the idea of cultural diffusion or culture "borrowing." A cursory overview of the historical content presented in the unit is provided by the chart on the next page, which gives a description of the categories of culture at various points in Greek history. Due to the myriad of historical opinions regarding "the facts" of the Bronze Age, Homeric Greece, and pre-Classical Greece, the teacher is referred to this as a very general overview of the acknowledged factual framework in the unit. On completion of the ten-week study, students should be able to categorize this historical period in similar fashion. Aristophanes Eq. 1059) This article1 originated when R.H.S. drew some of his published and unpub- lished observations on Laconian topography to the attention of R.J., who had just brought out the final report on the excavations at Ayios Stephanos. Consideration of these observations and of other recent scholarship has led us to reconsider the significance of Ayios Stephanos in the Late Bronze Age, the location(s) of ancient Helos, and the network of premodern roads in the region. The photographs were taken by R.H.S. in 1956 during his extensive survey of southern Laconia, on behalf of the British School, when he first discovered the site of Ayios Stephanos2. The maps, compiled by the authors, have been drawn by Jennifer Grek Martin. I. AYIOS STEPHANOS AND ITS HISTORY Ayios Stephanos lies in South Laconia on the western edge of the modern Helos Plain (Fig. 1). The excavations that were undertaken there in 1959–77 by the late Lord William Taylour, under the auspices of the British School, have revealed a coastal settlement with a long history, which can be reconstructed in detail from a stratigraphic sequence that is, for the Bronze Age, almost complete. Granville Township did abolish our Sewer Authority and in turn made it a Department within the Township. Her only factual statement. The rest of her comments in reference to Granville Township are all false. In our situation our Authority never functioned 100% independently like the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Lewistown (MABL). The Township since installing our first sewer line has always maintained the payroll, pension, insurances, etc. for our Sewer Department. We invoice the Sewer Dept. monthly for the costs. We have never raped, pillaged or stolen from our Sewer Department for the General Fund as she implies or as the Borough is planning to do with MABL dollars. We didn’t realize that another governmental body or constituents wanting to ask questions or disagreeing with public officials was an attack. It is not the intent of a Countywide Authority to “continue attacks”. We can’t continue something that never occurred. If it was, why would Lewistown Borough have three (3) seats at the table? We as a group of neighboring municipalities have never been “anti-Lewistown”. We have publicly asked for Lewistown Borough to come to the table to find a resolution that suits the entire County and Lewistown Borough has refused.

J Introduction Though the very earliest democracies lildy took shape elsewhere in Greece, Athens embraced it relatively early and would ultimately become the most famous and powerful democracy the ancient world ever hew. Democracy is usually thought to have taken hold among the Athenians with the constitutional reforms of Cleisthenes, ca. 508/7 BC. The tyrant Peisistratus and later his sons had ruled Athens for decades before they were overthrown; Cleisthenes, rallying the people to his cause, made sweeping changes. These included the creation of a representative council (bode)chosen from among the citizens, new public organizations that more closely tied citizens throughout Attica to the Athenian state, and the populist ostracism law that enabled citizens to exile danger- ous or undesirable politicians by vote. Beginning with these measures, and for the next two centuries or so with only the briefest of interruptions, democracy held sway at Athens. Such is the most common interpretation. But there is, in fact, much room for disagree- ment about when and how democracy came to Athens. Ancient authors sometimes refer to Solon, a lawgiver and mediator of the early sixth century, as the founder of the Athenian constitution. It was also a popular belief among the Athenians that two famous “tyrant-slayers,” Harmodius and Aristogeiton, inaugurated Athenian freedom by assas- sinating one of the sons of Peisistratus a few years before Cleisthenes’ reforms - though ancient writers take pains to point out that only the military intervention of Sparta truly ended the tyranny.

    Shared Place Names Hide Different Meanings There are 170 streams in Montana named Spring Creek, and three of them are in Jefferson County. One contributes to Little Whitetail Creek, just below where the McClusky Fire burned for two months last summer; another is a small tributary to Turnley Creek and its beaver dams just west of the town of Elkhorn; the third is the longest, running from the Montana Tunnels Mine to Jefferson City, where it pours into Prickly Pear Creek. When a space on earth is given a name it becomes more than just the sum of its parts, and it becomes a place. Why a chunk of earth is named what it is can serve different purposes. It can be descriptive, like Rock Creek. Some names are attempts to etch on the map a permanent reminder of the namer or someone who first turned that space into a place, such as Wilson Creek. Others, and perhaps the most beautiful, are attempts to put to paper the way a place makes one feel, as with The Angels Bathing Pool in Montana’s Mission Mountains. No matter the origin, it is important for geographic features to have standardized names. It was just a function of how Anglo-Americans moved across the landscape that the names of modern features were not all configured at once, and so while one pioneer came across a creek in northeast Montana that had cottonwood trees on it and so proclaimed it Cottonwood Creek, a miner in southwest Montana came across a similar creek and did the same thing.

SHERK THE EPONYMOUS OFFICIALS OF GREEK CITIES: I aus: Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik 83 (1990) 249–288 © Dr. Rudolf Habelt GmbH, Bonn 249 The Eponymous Officials of Greek Cities: I (A) Introduction The eponymous official or magistrate after whom the year was named in Greek cities or as- sociations is well known to all epigraphists under various titles: archon, prytanis, stephanepho- ros, priest, etc. Some details about them have appeared in many articles and in scattered pas- sages of scholarly books. However, not since the publication of Clemens Gnaedinger, De Graecorum magistratibus eponymis quaestiones epigraphicae selectae (Diss. Strassburg 1892) has there been a treatment of the subject as a whole, although the growth of the material in this regard has been enormous.1 What is missing, however, is an attempt to bring the material up to date in a comprehensive survey covering the whole Greek world, at least as far as possible. The present article, of which this is only the first part, will present that material in a geographically organized manner: mainland Greece and the adjacent islands, then the Aegean islands, Asia Minor and Thrace, Syria, Egypt, Cyrene, Sicily, and southern Italy. All the epi- graphic remains of that area have been examined and catalogued. General observations and conclusions will be presented after the evidence as a whole has been given. I. Earliest Examples of Eponymity The earliest form of writing appeared in Sumer and Assyria sometime within the last half of the fourth millennium BC, and from there it spread westward. Thus, it is not at all surpris- ing that the Mesopotamian civilizations also made the earliest use of assigning names or events to years in dating historical records.

    Ancient History Sourcebook: 11th Brittanica: Sparta SPARTA AN ancient city in Greece, the capital of Laconia and the most powerful state of the Peloponnese. The city lay at the northern end of the central Laconian plain, on the right bank of the river Eurotas, a little south of the point where it is joined by its largest tributary, the Oenus (mount Kelefina). The site is admirably fitted by nature to guard the only routes by which an army can penetrate Laconia from the land side, the Oenus and Eurotas valleys leading from Arcadia, its northern neighbour, and the Langada Pass over Mt Taygetus connecting Laconia and Messenia. At the same time its distance from the sea-Sparta is 27 m. from its seaport, Gythium, made it invulnerable to a maritime attack. I.-HISTORY Prehistoric Period.-Tradition relates that Sparta was founded by Lacedaemon, son of Zeus and Taygete, who called the city after the name of his wife, the daughter of Eurotas. But Amyclae and Therapne (Therapnae) seem to have been in early times of greater importance than Sparta, the former a Minyan foundation a few miles to the south of Sparta, the latter probably the Achaean capital of Laconia and the seat of Menelaus, Agamemnon's younger brother. Eighty years after the Trojan War, according to the traditional chronology, the Dorian migration took place. A band of Dorians united with a body of Aetolians to cross the Corinthian Gulf and invade the Peloponnese from the northwest. The Aetolians settled in Elis, the Dorians pushed up to the headwaters of the Alpheus, where they divided into two forces, one of which under Cresphontes invaded and later subdued Messenia, while the other, led by Aristodemus or, according to another version, by his twin sons Eurysthenes and Procles, made its way down the Eurotas were new settlements were formed and gained Sparta, which became the Dorian capital of Laconia.

    Histos () – MOTHER OF SNAKES AND KINGS: APOLLONIUS RHODIUS’ FOUNDATION OF ALEXANDRIA* Abstract: Of all the lost Foundation Poems attributed to Apollonius Rhodius, active at the court of Ptolemy II, the Ktisis of Alexandria must have been the most important for his contemporaries, and surely is the most intriguing for modern scholars of the Hellenistic world. Unfortunately, only a brief mention of this epyllion survives, in a scholion to Nicander’s Theriaka , relating to the birth of poisonous snakes from the severed head of Medusa, carried by Perseus over Libya . Deadly and benign serpents belong to a multi- cultural symbolic imagery intertwined with the Greek, Macedonian, Egyptian and Jewish origins of the city. This paper explores the possible connections of the only episode preserved from Apollonius’ Ktisis with the most ancient known traditions on the foundation of Alexandria —possibly even created at the time of Alexander or of the first Lagid dynasts, Ptolemy I and II.
