Ironically, he was banned by the music industry there (not by the state) for life from playing in georgia, because he refused to play in a Jim Crow club*. This was revoked in 1979, when the Georgia State Assembly welcomed him and declared ““Georgia On My Mind” the state song. * Jim Crow club refers to the club’s being segregated.
