This song was released by Ray Charles in 1960, although it was originally written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell. Ray loved Georgia and wanted to get more into country music, so he reinterpreted the song.
Ironically, he was banned by the music industry there (not by the state) for life from playing in georgia, because he refused to play in a Jim Crow club*. This was revoked in 1979, when the Georgia State Assembly welcomed him and declared ““Georgia On My Mind” the state song. * Jim Crow club refers to the club’s being segregated.
