February Letter from the Clergy

Do you sometimes wonder how we come to be using some of our common phrases or sayings? I was made to think about this the other day when I was talking to someone about the various things I had to do, and as we parted he said, “Oh well, keep your nose to the grindstone”. I knew exactly what he meant, but as I walked away I thought what an odd turn of phrase this was and I wondered how it had acquired the sort of common usage and understanding it has amongst us. So, I looked it up.

The people who look into these things think that the grindstones are the stones used by a smith for putting a sharp edge on a tool. And the original use of the saying was to hold someone else’s nose to the grindstone – sort of grinding them down. Apparently, there is a cartoon from the mid seventeenth century showing the future Charles II’s nose being held to the grindstone by the Scots. Over the years, though, the meaning has softened a bit.

Thinking about all of this made me reflect a bit about this month of February. This is the month when there is nothing special happening in the Church’s year. The Christmas season ends on February 2nd with the feast of the presentation of Christ in the Temple or Candlemas. The season of Lent starts on March 5th and runs all the way through that month. But the weeks of February this year are a sort of in between time and just the right sort of time for getting on with all the routine things that need to be done and that really should not be left – in other words, it’s the time for keeping your nose to the grindstone and just getting on with it all. If that seems a bit boring, then it made me remember what Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the great German Lutheran theologian of the Second World War, said. He was arrested and eventually executed by Hitler for his opposition to the Nazi regime. Writing from his prison cell as he awaited his death, he spoke of the need for ‘this-worldliness’, by which he meant “living unreservedly in life’s routines, duties, problems, successes, failures, experiences and perplexities. In so doing we throw ourselves completely in the arms of God.”

As I write this, we had our very first joint Council meeting of Oakwood Church last night. It became clear to us that there’s a lot for us all to do. So maybe keeping your nose to the grindstone is not such a bad thing. And February will give us the opportunity.

Thorner News

Where does the time go? Here we are - in February! However, I must tell of what occurred at the events that I reported to you in our Dec/Jan Broadcast. Our Christmas Fayre held on Nov 26th, thanks to your support, raised over £400:00 for Thorner Methodist Church Funds. Without the support of the Roundhay folk this sum would not have been possible. Thank you SO much for supporting our fund raising events. Our next fund raising event will take place on Sat March 22nd, 10-12noon in the Social Centre, in aid of The Home/Overseas Missions of the Methodist Church. These are very worthwhile Methodist Charities supporting the needs of Mission in our own country and overseas. Do support us if you can! As usual, Bacon Butties will be served at this event!!!!

Our Millennium Green Carol service was held on the Green as usual on Sat Dec 14th. We had a collection in aid of the Children's Society. The event had mulled wine and warm mince pies and once again we were fortunate to have the North Leeds Music Centre, led by Mervyn and Lois Manning, playing for us. Many thanks once again to them for leading our carol service; it was wonderful!

On Sun Jan 19th at 9:30am, we held our joint Ecumenical Covenant service with St. Peter's at Thorner Methodists. The service was very well attended and appreciated by all who came. This service also took place in The Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity (Jan 18-25th).

Our next joint effort will be our Lent Group which will begin on Monday March 10th for five weeks, finishing on Monday April 7th. This will be held at Thorner Methodists’ Social Centre from 10:15am onwards. All are welcome.

Illusions @ Oakwood!

On January 4th we held a spectacular evening of magic and mayhem here at Oakwood Church. We were delighted to welcome Steve Price, member of the Inner Magic Circle, to entertain 180 of us. He was utterly sensational! The audience were spellbound as he amused and amazed us in equal measure.

Over home cooked soup, bread and cheese we were treated to some close up magic, much to the delight of young and old. Games were played and we finished off with a rousing sing of The twelve days of Christmas, complete with actions and jumping out of our chairs!

How did he do it?

Ethan improvising a pack of cards with a loaf of bread.

For those who missed out on tickets for this event, and for those who had a blast with us, do keep your eye on the Church Website and Facebook for other events coming soon. Is Christ Divided? This is sharp and challenging question, offered this year by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland as the theme for the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity. We will engage with this material for 2014 against a backcloth of significant change in West Yorkshire. As Methodists in the Leeds district we wish to be prayerfully supportive of all three of the Church of Dioceses ( & Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford) as they prepare to come together into a single Diocese to serve West Yorkshire and the Dales, from Easter Day this year. This journey of change means that they are currently in a time of transition, with Diocesan Bishops departing and Suffragen Bishops preparing for changes in their roles as they become Area Bishops within the new Diocese. The staff of three Cathedrals and many others, lay and ordained, are caught up in the uncertainty of how new ways of working will impact them. In recent years there have been radical changes in every Christian denomination, and of course we have experienced our fair share of change and reshaping as Methodists. As I bid farewell to valued ecumenical colleagues at this time, one of my reflections has been that if we were ‘divided’, we could each remain untouched and unmoved by the changes around us. The reality, however, is that we are deeply affected by them because across North and West Yorkshire at least, the whole breadth of Church traditions are closely interwoven. We are co-dependent in valuable partnerships for mission and ministry; we value the commitment and insights of our sisters and brothers in Christ; we benefit from the energy they bring, the prayerfulness that they embody, and the resources they are willing to share with us. In short, we have come to know and respect and love one another, in all our variety of gifts and faults, and we recognise one another as members of the Body of Christ. Is Christ divided? Of course not! Does it appear to the world that Christ is divided? Only if we are determined to live within theological barricades of our own constructing. Is Christ divided? No! But there is a challenge for each of us: where do we glimpse something of the colourful creativity of our shared rootedness in Christ’s sacrificial love, that will convince us of the unity that we already share in Christ?

 Many of us take photos on our digital cameras, telephones or tablets. Others are sent digital photos by friends and relatives. We may prefer to have our photos taken by professional photographers, such as White Box photography who hold sessions here and deliver your digital photos on CD

 Some of us prefer to view our photos as prints but they look so much nicer when beautifully printed as a bound album complete with descriptive text. Nowadays that is surprisingly affordable, easy to achieve and creatively satisfying

Wanted - Sorcerer’s Apprentice(s)

A year after we conceived the idea I continue to enjoy working creatively with everyone in the wider church community on developing www.oakwoodchurch.info

We haven’t written any software. We don’t command the skills to do that and it wouldn’t be sustainable to deploy anything that depended on more than an ordinary person with average common sense.

We deliberately chose to build our website using a software package that was designed for ordinary home PC users and the owners of small businesses.

Serif WebPlus X6 runs on any Windows PC running XP or better that is connected to the web at basic broadband speeds. Anyone who can use a package like Word or PowerPoint could learn how to use WebPlus.

The thing is – I enjoy taking touring / walking holidays lasting several weeks. And there is always a possibility that I might take poorly or ‘fall under a bus’. Consequently, Oakwood Church needs one or more people to train as my back-up and to make any minor changes to the site that may be called for in my absence (such as updating the Events page).

No CV or interview is required and of course these opportunities are open to persons of any age or gender. I will simply hold an introductory session at my home for anyone who would like to explore this chance to learn with and work in partnership alongside me while developing new skills.

The backing-me-up workload will be minimal. Once trained your occasional involvement would be measured in minutes or hours rather than days – but if you did want to take on more that would be possible.

Hours are flexible. You can work from home at whatever time of the day or night you prefer. And it won’t cost you a penny. The software will be provided free – empowering you to apply your new skills to developing websites for others, if that took your fancy.

If I have sparked your interest then explore it with me. No commitment.

The group is thriving and we have chatted about our personal memories of Roundhay Park, events attended there such as Children’s Day and going to the Swimming Pool.

We also met on 19th December and reminisced about Christmas. We saw the unwrapping of a loved home-made Christmas tree first used in 1949 and learned why the first mince pies were cradle shaped.

At the time of writing we plan to meet on 16th January when we will reminisce about Healthcare e.g. the first doctor or hospital we went to, medicines and how treatments have changed.

Participation is free and everyone is welcome. Refreshments are available for a small donation.

If you are able to bring along materials such as old books, menus, adverts, postcards, photographs, letters, maps, newspaper cuttings, objects and so on to inspire our reminiscing, that would be wonderful.

Or simply come along, enjoy the company, ask and listen. You don’t have to contribute if you don’t want to.Elaine Pye and I look forward to seeing you there.

We plan to continue to meet in the New Room on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 13.15 until 14.45 during the winter months from October until Easter.

Finally, you may like to look at our History web pages e.g. www.oakwoodchurch.info/roundhaymethodist.html to see the first chapters of our History of Roundhay Methodist Church.

Every year for the last 12 years Anne’s Trinity Church has held a Christmas Tree Festival. This lasts for 3 days and is well supported. This year there were 32 trees provided and decorated by church members and local groups. Each tree has a theme. Two well known local people are invited to be judges and the money raised goes half to the church and half to a charity of the winner’s choice. Usually well over £1000 is raised. Refreshments are served all time the festival is on and there are other fund raising activities. A lot of hard work but the sight of all those trees lit up in a darkened hall makes it all worthwhile. On Christmas Eve we went to Cleveleys Park Methodist church to a Nativity Festival, a new venture. Table tops were placed over the pews and on each were 3 or 4 nativity scenes from all over the world. These were made in any available material – wood, china, plaster, clay, wool etc. We were glad we had made the effort to go through the rain and the gale especially as, hopefully, we shall spend next Christmas in Consett, Co. Durham. Anne moves there in August. Joyce Kilvington.

A record two thousand people, young and old, joined the and Leeds, Rt Revd at Fountains Abbey as he led his final ‘Boxing Day Pilgrimage’ from to Fountains Abbey before retiring in the New Year.

Hundreds of walkers from across the city and region enjoyed a crisp sunny day which started with sub-zero temperatures and frosty footpaths. The four-mile pilgrimage follows in the footsteps of a group of Cistercian Monks from York who walked from Ripon to Fountains on December 26th, 1132, and founded the Abbey.

The Boxing Day Pilgrimage began with a short service of Holy Communion in Ripon Cathedral, before several hundred walkers set off through the streets of Ripon, led by Bishop Packer, for the one and a half hour walk.

The route wended its way from the West Front of Ripon Cathedral, out of the city and through beautiful parkland and countryside following the banks of the River Skell before entering the Studley Royal Deer Park and on to the World Heritage site of Fountains Abbey.

The numbers swelled to twelve hundred once the walk reached the Studley Royal Water Gardens entrance...

The National Trust said that a further eight hundred visitors joined the pilgrims for the final service of carols held in the Cellarium of Fountains Abbey and led by Bishop Packer. It was standing room only with many more outside for the twenty five minute act of worship.

The Boxing Day Pilgrimage has been described by Bishop John as one of the highlights of his year. He has led the walk each year for the past fourteen years as Bishop of Ripon and Leeds.

“For me, the Boxing Day Pilgrimage has always been one of the highlights of the year, though more so on a crisp winter morning than if it is pouring with rain!” says Bishop John. “The walk gives us the chance to talk with one another and gives us a sense of pilgrimage and of moving forward and on into the New Year. This year in particular I will be looking forward, to a new chapter in my own life and to a new chapter in the life of the diocese.”

During the concluding service of carols, Bishop Packer announced that next year’s Pilgrimage will be led for the first time by Bishop , the Bishop of Knaresborough, who becomes Area Bishop for Ripon in the new diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales.

A final farewell service for Bishop John and his wife Barbara will take place at Ripon Cathedral on Sunday January 5th at 3pm.

A Prayer for Fairtrade (Fairtrade Fortnight 24/2-9/3)

Tilt the scales,

O God of the mustard seed: that the poor shall see justice.

Share the feast, O God of Eden’s abundant garden: that each crop may fetch a fair price.

Upset the tables, O God of the upside-down Kingdom: that the least can benefit from their trade.

Open our eyes, O God of life in all its fullness: That we may learn to walk the way of your son tilting, sharing, upsetting this world.

Not satisfied until the products we bring to our table give a better deal, to all who hunger for one.

Traidcraft ‘A poor man's field may produce an abundant harvest but injustice sweeps it away’. Proverbs 13:23

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

Here at Oakwood Church we support that by having a fairtrade stall once a month in the New Room (on the 2nd Sunday after Church Parade) where you can purchase many different items – chocolate, coffee, tea, rice cakes, jewellery, Geobars, dried fruit, to name just a few things! Many other items are available too – clothes, bags, scarves, household items – do borrow a catalogue and have a browse! As well as supporting Traidcraft 10% of all sales goes to our Church.

Did you know that over 1.2 million bananas are sold in the UK every year, but only 1 in 3 of these is fairtrade. Fairtrade Fortnight 2014 (24 February-9 March) marks the launch of a special campaign that aims to transform the banana industry to ensure those at the sharp end of the supply chain, the millions of struggling banana farmers and workers, get a fair deal. Have a look at the Fairtrade Foundation’s Website for more information.

If you would like to be involved with fairtrade and Traidcraft at Oakwood Church please do get in touch with me!

To book your place put your name on the list on the church notice board or ring Paul Butler 2892184 before 16th February. An Ending and a Beginning I am writing this amidst packing boxes and sorting much paper. We are moving! In a few days time this manse will cease to be the home of the Chair of the Leeds District. It has been the District Manse since 1957, so as I pack the boxes I find myself reflecting upon all the living, thinking, praying and conversing that these walls have held during those 56 years. I think of all the visitors who have been welcomed, the meals shared, the laughter enjoyed; the phone calls taken, and emails responded to; all the business conducted through these rooms when the District Office was based here; the cups of tea and coffee consumed, tears shed, encouragement shared; and all the profound thinking and theologising of my predecessors in this role (!) The role of Chair of District has changed and developed during these years, and we continue to be challenged by further significant changes to our ways of being Methodists across the connexion. My thoughts are not all about the past. At this time of moving house, I am already wondering how the new manse will work, wanting to make that too a place that is home and prayerful, and that offers a welcome, for family and for others. In parallel with this domestic ending and beginning, I have been listening to some of the many commentaries on the life of Nelson Mandela. His passing marks the end of a monumental chapter in the history of South Africa, and of the wider world. For many people, however, his death has also invited or provoked a recommitment to the ideals of peace, racial justice, and reconciliation for the next generation, and not only in South Africa. At a service of commemoration for Mandela in , the final Act of Commitment began with these words:

We cannot live in the past; neither should we forget it. We are here in the present because those who have gone before us have given it to us. We have the future to explore: may we not waste it, but live it to the full.

These are perhaps fitting thoughts as we all embark upon the challenge of another year. I pray that it will be a peaceful and fulfilling year for each of us, and in our shared journey of discipleship. Liz Smith Chair of Leeds Methodist District
