Newsletter for May 2018 Mission Statement “To maximise the learning potential of every pupil within the love of God.” May has been a very busy month so far. The children reminded us of the ‘force’ that is always with us and read & sang beautifully. 4DE led Worship on 11th May— the theme was ‘Wisdom’ and the children told the school about what wisdom meant to them and sang a fantastic version of ‘Man in the Mirror’. Then we went in the reptile room—we saw a bearded dragon, hedgehog, circus mice and a snake! We went on the coach, we also saw a massive cow called Golden and we stoked her. We had a go to try to walk with the cow on a rope which was really hard. We went to the playbarn—it had 6 levels—it was fun! We had our lunch there. We planted some seeds and then got on the coach and went back to school. It was a magnificent day!” Reported by Olivia and Ethan (Y2) Y3 Trip to White Scar Cave: “It was really safe there as there were bars and we had hard hats . There were stalagmites and stalactites—some were HUGE! Water could come flooding through—the public weren’t allowed to touch certain things. It was a fun day—and in the gift shop there was slime, keyrings and pretty note- books!” Reported by Nadia and Frankie Confirmation Service in school: The Confirmation Service for those children who have been attending classes with Father Martin in school, will be on Monday 18th June at 2pm in the school hall. Further details will be sent to those children being con- firmed. Forest School arrives at St Nicholas! At St Nicholas School, the children will have the opportunity to engage in motivating and achievable tasks and activities throughout the year and in almost all weathers. Children will work with tools, play, learn boundaries of behaviour; grow in confidence, self-esteem and motivation whilst developing an understanding of the natural world. The Forest School concept originates from Den- mark, originally aimed at pre-school children, where it was found that children who had attended Forest School then arrived at school with strong social and communication skills, having the ability to work in groups effectively, generally had high self-esteem and a confidence in their own abilities. These foundations helped them to raise their academic achievements. Forest School England defines Forest School as: 'An inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults, regular opportu- nities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a local woodland.' Over the coming weeks and months I hope you will hear more about this—from the children themselves who are taking part! • The Globalization of K-Pop: the Interplay of External and Internal Forces
THE GLOBALIZATION OF K-POP: THE INTERPLAY OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES Master Thesis presented by Hiu Yan Kong Furtwangen University MBA WS14/16 Matriculation Number 249536 May, 2016 Sworn Statement I hereby solemnly declare on my oath that the work presented has been carried out by me alone without any form of illicit assistance. All sources used have been fully quoted. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

  • Live Music Matters Scottish Music Review
Live Music Matters Simon Frith Tovey Professor of Music, University of Edinburgh Scottish Music Review Abstract Economists and sociologists of music have long argued that the live music sector must lose out in the competition for leisure expenditure with the ever increasing variety of mediated musical goods and experiences. In the last decade, though, there is evidence that live music in the UK is one of the most buoyant parts of the music economy. In examining why this should be so this paper is divided into two parts. In the first I describe why and how live music remains an essential part of the music industry’s money making strategies. In the second I speculate about the social functions of performance by examining three examples of performance as entertainment: karaoke, tribute bands and the Pop Idol phenomenon. These are, I suggest, examples of secondary performance, which illuminate the social role of the musical performer in contemporary society. 1. The Economics of Performance Introduction It has long been an academic commonplace that the rise of mediated music (on record, radio and the film soundtrack) meant the decline of live music (in concert hall, music hall and the domestic parlour). For much of the last 50 years the UK’s live music sector, for example, has been analysed as a sector in decline. Two kinds of reason are adduced for this. On the one hand, economists, following the lead of Baumol and Bowen (1966), have assumed that live music can achieve neither the economies of scale nor the reduction of labour costs to compete with mass entertainment media.

  • Rca Records to Release American Idol: Greatest Moments on October 1
THE RCA RECORDS LABEL ___________________________________________ RCA RECORDS TO RELEASE AMERICAN IDOL: GREATEST MOMENTS ON OCTOBER 1 On the heels of crowning Kelly Clarkson as America's newest pop superstar, RCA Records is proud to announce the release of American Idol: Greatest Moments on Oct. 1. The first full-length album of material from Fox's smash summer television hit, "American Idol," will include four songs by Clarkson, two by runner-up Justin Guarini, a song each by the remaining eight finalists, and “California Dreamin’” performed by all ten. All 14 tracks on American Idol: Greatest Moments, produced by Steve Lipson (Backstreet Boys, Annie Lennox), were performed on "American Idol" during the final weeks of the reality-based television barnburner. In addition to Kelly and Justin, the show's remaining eight finalists featured on the album include Nikki McKibbon, Tamyra Gray, EJay Day, RJ Helton, AJ Gil, Ryan Starr, Christina Christian, and Jim Verraros. Producer Steve Lipson, who put the compilation together in an unprecedented two-weeks time, finds a range of pop gems on the album. "I think Kelly's version of ‘Natural Woman' is really strong. Her vocals are brilliant. She sold me on the song completely. I like Christina's 'Ain't No Sunshine.' I think she got the emotion of it across well. Nikki is very good as well -- very underestimated. And Tamyra is brilliant too so there's not much more to say about her." RCA Records will follow American Idol: Greatest Moments with the debut album from “American Idol” champion Kelly Clarkson in the first quarter of 2003.

  • Between Hybridity and Hegemony in K-Pop's Global Popularity
International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2367–2386 1932–8036/20170005 Between Hybridity and Hegemony in K-Pop’s Global Popularity: A Case of Girls’ Generation’s American Debut GOOYONG KIM1 Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, USA Examining the sociocultural implications of Korean popular music (K-pop) idol group Girls’ Generation’s (SNSD’s) debut on Late Show With David Letterman, this article discusses how the debut warrants a critical examination on K-pop’s global popularity. Investigating critically how the current literature on K-pop’s success focuses on cultural hybridity, this article maintains that SNSD’s debut clarifies how K-pop’s hybridity does not mean dialectical interactions between American form and Korean content. Furthermore, this article argues that cultural hegemony as a constitutive result of sociohistorical and politico- economic arrangements provides a better heuristic tool, and K-pop should be understood as a part of the hegemony of American pop and neoliberalism. Keywords: Korean popular music, cultural hybridity, cultural hegemony, neoliberalism As one of the most sought-after Korean popular music (K-pop) groups, Girls’ Generation’s (SNSD’s) January 2012 debut on two major network television talk shows in the United States warrants critical reconsideration of the current discourse on cultural hybridity as the basis of K-pop’s global popularity. Prior to Psy’s “Gangnam Style” phenomenon, SNSD’s “The Boys” was the first time a Korean group appeared on an American talk show. It marks a new stage in K-pop’s global reach and influence. With a surge of other K- pop idols gaining global fame, especially in Japan, China, and other Asian countries, SNSD’s U.S.

  • Appropriating South Korean Popular Culture: I-Pop and K-Drama Remakes in Indonesia
Cultural Dynamics in a Globalized World – Budianta et al. (Eds) © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London, ISBN 978-1-138-62664-5 Appropriating South Korean popular culture: I-pop and K-drama remakes in Indonesia S.M.G. Tambunan Department of English, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia, Depok, Indonesia ABSTRACT: The dynamic flow of South Korean popular cultural products has trans- formed the way “East Asia” is perceived in Indonesia. Consumption of these products greatly influences consumers’ imagination, as argued by Appadurai, which becomes an arena of negotiation as well as contestation in the sites of individual and communal agency. On the one hand, consumers in Indonesia perceive these products as a representation of “East Asia,” which is considered a well-known entity that is often used as a strategic defense mechanism (i.e., against Western cultural domination). On the other hand, consumers are seeking for more familiar goods in the form of mimicking products, such as I-pop’s boy/girl band or Indonesian television sinetron copying plots from K-dramas. This paper investigates how cultural borrowing and/or appropriating are strategically used in the meaning-making proc- ess of the new global and the modern portrayed by South Korean popular cultural products and their copycat versions. The author argues that, instead of focusing on the authentic and inauthentic cultural products that oversimplify the debate, this phenomenon should be ana- lyzed as a form of pastiche, which reveals the repetitive nature of popular culture flows

  • Body As Evidence
Chapter 1 Pop Goes Democracy Mediating Race, Gender, and Nation on American Idol Parallels between presidential elections and the hit TV series are not hard to make. Indeed, they had become punch lines in comedyAmerican routines: Idol from Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert complaining that it took too long to determine the next American Idol (in a gag that had audiences assuming he was referring to the next U.S. president) to ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel quipping that, after watching the vice presidential debate during the U.S. presidential campaign in 2008, he “voted four times for Sarah Palin and six times for David Archuleta,” in reference to the popular Republican vice presidential candidate and frontrunner contestant that year. Interestingly, movie critic RogerAmerican Ebert Idol’s mounted criticism against Palin for being “the American Idol candidate,” in which he argued the following: I think I might be able to explain some of Sarah Palin’s appeal. She’s the “American Idol” candidate. Consider. What defines an “American Idol” finalist? They’re good‑looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they’re darned near the real thing. There’s a reason “American Idol” gets such high ratings. People identify with the contestants. They think, Hey, that could be me up there on that show! . My problem is, I don’t want to be up there. I don’t want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well‑traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq.

  • Authenticity and X Factor: Narratives of Stardom, Background/Aspiration and Performance
Authenticity and X Factor: Narratives of Stardom, Background/Aspiration and Performance If success is to be measured numerically the UK X Factor is a triumph of superlatives. An average of 16.55 million viewers tuned in during the two-hour final episode on 11th December 20101, making it the most watched programme of the year on British television2. The winner, Matt Cardle, sold 439,000 copies of his single in the week following his victory3 and, according to The Guardian, the final weekend of the 2010 series raised £25 million in advertising revenue for its host channel ITV4. X Factor is a television format that grew out of ‘pop reality’ shows Popstars (UK, 2001-2) and Pop Idol (UK, 2002-3) and was established in 2004. The basic premise of the programme is to ‘discover’ a new popstar from an ever-dwindling pool of contestants. It begins with the ‘auditions’ section where the judges (Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole) whittle thousands of auditionees down to a ‘top 12’. These twelve acts are divided into four groups with each group assigned to a particular judge as their ‘mentor’. The so-called ‘live shows’ now begins in which each act must sing live every week5. Through a mixture of audience voting and judges decisions, one act is sent home every week, eventually leaving one to be crowned X Factor champion. Alongside this phenomenal commercial success, X Factor continues to be criticised in much of the UK media. Criticism tends to evoke an Adornian notion of the culture 1 http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/table/2010/dec/21/top-tv-shows-2010 2 http://www.barb.co.uk/report/weeklyTopProgrammesOverview? 3 http://www.nme.com/news/nme/54322 4 http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/dec/08/x-factor-ad-revenues industry, condemning the show as a commercialised enterprise intent on churning out banal and commoditised art (Adorno & Horkheimer, 1944: 121).
