JYP Entertainment (035900 KQ ) Margin recovery in 3Q19 will be key Entertainment 2Q19 review: OP slightly misses expectations, at W9.4bn Results Comment For 2Q19, JYP Entertainment announced consolidated revenue of W39.2bn (+24.1% YoY; all growth figures hereafter are YoY) and operating profit of W9.4bn (+3.9%). Operating profit was August 16, 2019 slightly below our estimate (W10.3bn) and the consensus. Revenue growth continued to be driven by the content (+40% for album/digital music) and global digital (+52% to W1.3bn for YouTube revenue) segments , and the monetization of new artists also gained traction. That said, margins contracted due to increased artist royalties and management costs (gross margin fell 4.6%p to 43.7%). While the decline was modest, these costs are affected by a (Maintain) Buy number of factors, including the terms of individual artist contracts, leverage effects from album sales, and overseas schedules. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

The first full-length album of material from Fox's smash summer television hit, "American Idol," will include four songs by Clarkson, two by runner-up Justin Guarini, a song each by the remaining eight finalists, and “California Dreamin’” performed by all ten. All 14 tracks on American Idol: Greatest Moments, produced by Steve Lipson (Backstreet Boys, Annie Lennox), were performed on "American Idol" during the final weeks of the reality-based television barnburner. In addition to Kelly and Justin, the show's remaining eight finalists featured on the album include Nikki McKibbon, Tamyra Gray, EJay Day, RJ Helton, AJ Gil, Ryan Starr, Christina Christian, and Jim Verraros. Producer Steve Lipson, who put the compilation together in an unprecedented two-weeks time, finds a range of pop gems on the album. "I think Kelly's version of ‘Natural Woman' is really strong. Her vocals are brilliant. She sold me on the song completely. I like Christina's 'Ain't No Sunshine.' I think she got the emotion of it across well. Nikki is very good as well -- very underestimated. And Tamyra is brilliant too so there's not much more to say about her." International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2367–2386 1932–8036/20170005 Between Hybridity and Hegemony in K-Pop’s Global Popularity: A Case of Girls’ Generation’s American Debut GOOYONG KIM1 Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, USA Examining the sociocultural implications of Korean popular music (K-pop) idol group Girls’ Generation’s (SNSD’s) debut on Late Show With David Letterman, this article discusses how the debut warrants a critical examination on K-pop’s global popularity. Investigating critically how the current literature on K-pop’s success focuses on cultural hybridity, this article maintains that SNSD’s debut clarifies how K-pop’s hybridity does not mean dialectical interactions between American form and Korean content. Furthermore, this article argues that cultural hegemony as a constitutive result of sociohistorical and politico- economic arrangements provides a better heuristic tool, and K-pop should be understood as a part of the hegemony of American pop and neoliberalism. Keywords: Korean popular music, cultural hybridity, cultural hegemony, neoliberalism As one of the most sought-after Korean popular music (K-pop) groups, Girls’ Generation’s (SNSD’s) January 2012 debut on two major network television talk shows in the United States warrants critical reconsideration of the current discourse on cultural hybridity as the basis of K-pop’s global popularity. Prior to Psy’s “Gangnam Style” phenomenon, SNSD’s “The Boys” was the first time a Korean group appeared on an American talk show. It marks a new stage in K-pop’s global reach and influence. El Hallyu, también llamado “Ola Coreana”, es el proceso de difusión de la cultura popular surcoreana, que inició a mediados de los años noventa y se mantiene hasta el día de hoy. Considerando el alcance global que logró obtener dicho fenómeno – debido al éxito de productos culturales tales como las telenovelas y el K-pop – esta tesis busca responder cuál es su impacto en la estrategia de soft power surcoreana. La investigación – que es de tipo explicativo y enfoque cualitativo – se basó en distintas publicaciones académicas para comprender el desarrollo del fenómeno Hallyu y los elementos que lo constituyen. Además, determina los efectos económicos, socioculturales y políticos del fenómeno Hallyu. -

Tambunan Department of English, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia, Depok, Indonesia ABSTRACT: The dynamic flow of South Korean popular cultural products has trans- formed the way “East Asia” is perceived in Indonesia. Consumption of these products greatly influences consumers’ imagination, as argued by Appadurai, which becomes an arena of negotiation as well as contestation in the sites of individual and communal agency. On the one hand, consumers in Indonesia perceive these products as a representation of “East Asia,” which is considered a well-known entity that is often used as a strategic defense mechanism (i.e., against Western cultural domination). On the other hand, consumers are seeking for more familiar goods in the form of mimicking products, such as I-pop’s boy/girl band or Indonesian television sinetron copying plots from K-dramas. This paper investigates how cultural borrowing and/or appropriating are strategically used in the meaning-making proc- ess of the new global and the modern portrayed by South Korean popular cultural products and their copycat versions. The author argues that, instead of focusing on the authentic and inauthentic cultural products that oversimplify the debate, this phenomenon should be ana- lyzed as a form of pastiche, which reveals the repetitive nature of popular culture flows -

Language in Society, page 1 of 38. doi:10.1017/S0047404518001355 Eating together multimodally: Collaborative eating in mukbang, a Korean livestream of eating HANWOOL CHOE Georgetown University, USA ABSTRACT Mukbang is a Korean livestream where a host eats while interacting with viewers. The eater ‘speaks’ to the viewers while eating and the viewers ‘type’ to each other and to the eater through a live chat room. Using interac- tional sociolinguistics along with insights from conversation analysis (CA) studies, the present study examines how sociable eating is jointly and multi- modally achieved in mukbang. Analyzing sixty-seven mukbang clips, I find that mukbang participants coordinate their actions through speech, written text, and embodied acts, and that this coordination creates involvement and, by extension, establishes both community and social agency. Specifi- cally, recruitments are the basic joint action of eating, as participants, who are taking turns, assume footings of the recruit and the recruiter. The host embodies viewers’ text recruitments through embodied animating and pup- peteering. As in street performance, the viewers often offer voluntary dona- tions, and the host shows entertaining gratitude in response. In Korea, the practice of common eating is recognized as a cultural hallmark: people not only share a table, but also eat from the same dishes. Togetherness is thus a key feature of Korean eating. In recent years, however, the traditional practice of eating together has taken on a new multimodal form among Korea’s younger generation.
