Resumen El presente trabajo busca analizar el efecto del fenómeno Hallyu en la estrategia de soft power de Corea del Sur. El Hallyu, también llamado “Ola Coreana”, es el proceso de difusión de la cultura popular surcoreana, que inició a mediados de los años noventa y se mantiene hasta el día de hoy. Considerando el alcance global que logró obtener dicho fenómeno – debido al éxito de productos culturales tales como las telenovelas y el K-pop – esta tesis busca responder cuál es su impacto en la estrategia de soft power surcoreana. La investigación – que es de tipo explicativo y enfoque cualitativo – se basó en distintas publicaciones académicas para comprender el desarrollo del fenómeno Hallyu y los elementos que lo constituyen. Además, determina los efectos económicos, socioculturales y políticos del fenómeno Hallyu. Adicionalmente, se analizaron diversas investigaciones y documentos oficiales del gobierno surcoreano para describir la estrategia de soft power aplicada por Corea del Sur desde el contexto del éxito del Hallyu, incluyendo las fuentes utilizadas, herramientas aplicadas, actores emisores, actores receptores, competencia y objetivos perseguidos. El análisis de esta estrategia está basado en la teoría de soft power propuesta por Joseph Nye. Finalmente, la tesis ilustra y analiza la naturaleza público-privada del desarrollo del Hallyu y el rol central de la cultura popular surcoreana y la diplomacia pública en la estrategia de soft power de Corea del Sur. Abstract The present paper seeks to analyze the effect of the Hallyu phenomenon in South Korea’s soft power strategy. Hallyu, also called “Korean wave”, is the diffusion process of South Korean popular culture, which started in the mid-nineties and continues nowadays. Considering the global scope that this phenomenon achieved – due to the success of cultural products such as Korean TV dramas and K-pop – this thesis aims to identify its impact in the South Korean soft power strategy. The research – which is explicative and has a qualitative approach – was based on several academic publications, in order to understand the development of the Hallyu phenomenon and the elements that constitute it. Besides, it determines the economic, sociocultural and political effects of Hallyu. Additionally, many papers and official documents of the South Korean government were analyzed to describe the soft power strategy applied by South Korea in the context of Hallyu’s success. This analysis includes the soft power resources, tools, wielder actors, recipient actors, competition and pursued objectives. The analysis of this strategy is based on the soft power theory proposed by Joseph Nye. Finally, the thesis illustrates and analyzes the public-private nature of Hallyu’s development, as well as the key role of both South Korea’s popular culture and public diplomacy in the country’s soft power strategy. I draw on thirteen months of ethnographic fieldwork with women from Europe and North America who travel to South Korea to form intimate relations with South Korean men in a phenomenon known as Hallyu tourism. Hallyu (also known as the Korean Wave) is a transnational phenomenon whereby people from all over the world consume South Korean popular culture including music, films, and television programs. In my dissertation, I focus on the transnational popularity of romantic South Korean television dramas and how they generate erotic desires in their viewers for South Korean men. I build on interdisciplinary debates in the fields of Gender Studies, Asian Studies, and Media Studies to examine the racial, gendered, and sexual politics of the Hallyu tourists’ erotic desires and their intimate relationships with South Korea men. I argue that these transnational relationships of intimacy produce racialized ii discourses of South Korean masculinity emerging at the intersection of South Korean cultural conceptions of gender and transnational discourses of race. Furthermore, I suggest that these intimate encounters between South Korean men and “Western” female Hallyu tourists compel us to reconfigure binary conceptions of West versus East, national versus transnational, sex versus romance, and masculine versus feminine.

    International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 1810–1835 1932–8036/20210005 Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: An Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada By employing cultural production approaches in conjunction with the global cultural economy, this article attempts to determine the primary characteristics of the rapid growth of local cultural industries and the global penetration of Korean cultural content. It documents major creators and their products that are received in many countries to identify who they are and what the major cultural products are. It also investigates power relations between cultural creators and the surrounding sociocultural and political milieu, discussing how cultural creators develop local popular culture toward the global cultural markets. I found that cultural creators emphasize the importance of cultural identity to appeal to global audiences as well as local audiences instead of emphasizing solely hybridization. Keywords: cultural production, Hallyu, cultural creators, transnational culture Since the early 2010s, the Korean Wave (Hallyu in Korean) has become globally popular, and media scholars (Han, 2017; T. J. Yoon & Kang, 2017) have paid attention to the recent growth of Hallyu in many parts of the world. Although the influence of Western culture has continued in the Korean cultural market as well as elsewhere, local cultural industries have expanded the exportation of their popular culture to several regions in both the Global South and the Global North. The eater ‘speaks’ to the viewers while eating and the viewers ‘type’ to each other and to the eater through a live chat room. Using interac- tional sociolinguistics along with insights from conversation analysis (CA) studies, the present study examines how sociable eating is jointly and multi- modally achieved in mukbang. Analyzing sixty-seven mukbang clips, I find that mukbang participants coordinate their actions through speech, written text, and embodied acts, and that this coordination creates involvement and, by extension, establishes both community and social agency. Specifi- cally, recruitments are the basic joint action of eating, as participants, who are taking turns, assume footings of the recruit and the recruiter. The host embodies viewers’ text recruitments through embodied animating and pup- peteering. As in street performance, the viewers often offer voluntary dona- tions, and the host shows entertaining gratitude in response.     Constructions of Good and Evil: The Koreas in International News Richard John Murray BA Hons, MJ A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2020 The School of Communication and Arts Abstract As part of the post-disruption news landscape this thesis investigates the construction (Berger & Luckmann, 1966; Couldry and Hepp, 2017) of North Korea and South Korea in international news. I argue the digital disruption of the news industry has not only transformed the delivery of news but also the practice of crafting stories on the Koreas. Taking Picard’s (2014) Twilight or New Dawn of Journalism thesis as a starting point, this thesis takes Picard’s post-disruption newsroom model and applies it to international news. Under this conception of news as an industry, newsrooms have become the site of the curation and distribution of news rather than a site of news gathering and production. Picard terms this the “service mode of journalism”. The scholarly practice of situating news framing research of this nature in a newsroom is rendered outdated when viewed through the lens of two digital migrant news organisations: news.com.au and The Guardian. Despite the changes in the role and function of the newsroom, journalism as a field of scholarship has been slow to respond. Within framing theory and methodology scholarship there is a persistence in applying outdated methods of newsroom ethnography in keeping with the classic studies in the tradition (Tuchman, 1978; Gans, 1979; Gitlan, 1980; Gamson, 1988; Entman, 1991, 1993; Reese, 2005). This thesis responds to the transformation of the role of the newsroom by moving beyond the newsroom and into the network where the stories on Korea are constructed.

It’s a thrill to be meeting in Calgary, nestled in the beautiful Canadian Rockies. This year INPUT is grateful to our conference hosts and to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, a giant in North American public television and across the world. From last year’s conference to this year’s we have moved from the bright lights of Tokyo to this historic city of the Canadian West… and the quality of our hosts remains exemplary. From their recent slew of Canadian Screen Awards to their excellent 2015 election coverage, the CBC has again affirmed its place as an essential service for the Canadian people. The Calgary Organizing Committee is comprised of key Alberta media professionals inviting us to enjoy and appreciate this region of Canada which has been the home of a vibrant independent media community, film schools, and media organizations. The themes of this year’s INPUT center on topics trending now: from virtual reality to local stories for a global audience, from new talk programs to inventive programming for young audiences. INPUT 2016 will ask questions from ‛do we pay a price for our engagement on the web?’ to ‛how do we cover our political leaders?’ Because that’s what INPUT is all about - sharing the successes and challenges we experience in the evolving media landscape.
