Tickets for the show are $79, $89, $99, $109 & $119. Knight has recorded two No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 singles, 11 No. 1 R&B singles and six No. 1 R&B albums. Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1952 at the age of 7, she won Ted Mac’s The Original Amateur Hour TV show contest. This event marked her first encounter with fame. Later that year, she formed a musical group named “the Pips” with her brother, sister and cousins. By the end of the decade, the act had begun to tour and eventually her sister and one of her cousins were replaced. By 1961, the group released a single on the tiny Atlanta Huntom label called “Every Beat of My Heart.” In 1966, Gladys Night and the Pips signed on with Motown Records with whom they scored several major hit singles, including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Take Me in Your Arms and Love Me,” and “If I Were Your Woman.” In 1973, they left Motown for a better deal with Buddah Records. Here they achieved significant success with hits such as the Grammy Award-winning track “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination” and “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.” The group continued to have hits until the late 1970s when they were forced to record separately due to legal issues, resulting in Knight’s first solo LP recordings – “Miss Gladys Knight” on Buddah Records in 1978 and “Gladys Knight” on Columbia Records in 1979. In 1980, the group reunited, signed with Columbia Records and began releasing new material. They scored with the hit “Save the Overtime For Me” in 1983. By 1987, Knight decided to pursue a solo career, and she and the Pips recorded their final LP together, “All Our Love” for MCA Records. Its lead single, “Love Overboard,” was a No. 1 R&B hit and won another Grammy for the group. After a successful tour in 1988, the Pips retired and Knight began her solo career. One year later, they were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Knight went on to perform with other R&B greats, including Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, and Diana Ross as well as with legendary signers such as Tom Jones, Lenny Kravitz and Elton John. Don’t miss an opportunity to see these hits performed live in one of the most popular music venues in Santa Barbara County. Located on Highway 246 in Santa Ynez, California, the Chumash Casino Resort is an age 21-and-older venue. Tickets for all events are available at The CLUB at Chumash or online at www.chumashcasino.com. .

  • A Soulful Sound Wendy Renee Delights Audiences with Her Vocals
M IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU By Jean Amodea A Soulful Sound Wendy Renee delights audiences with her vocals endy Renee abandoned the cold winters of Minneapolis, Minnesota for the sunshine of Southwest Florida, packing up her passion for singing, along with her personal belongings for the cross-country migration. That was eight years ago, and since then, the professional singer Whas delighted local audiences with her vocals. The multitalented beauty whom has modeled, acted and performed in musical theater was born into a home filled with music; never questioning that singing would be her life’s vocation. “My earliest memory was singing with both my parents, then at school events where I would organize talent shows, directing and casting and costuming. I even came up with a one- girl show in fourth grade wearing a turtle costume and performed in the library for whoever wanted to watch me,” Renee said, of her musical upbringing. Over the years, she developed an extensive repertoire, singing The Great American Songbook standards to the soulful music of her favorite influences, legends Etta James and the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald to the ‘60s music of Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross and Whitney Houston. “I love to learn new material and look for the talent in every generation of music; it also helps me from getting bored. I love singing the music of Adele, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars.” Renee calls opening for Etta James, in a Minneapolis concert where she performed an opening set of jump, swing and blues tunes, one of her most memorable performances.

Knight made her public singing debut at Mount Mariah Baptist Church, in Atlanta - she was 4 years old. At 7, she won first prize on Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour TV show. She got together with her brother Merald, sister Brenda, and cousins James “ Pip” Woods, William Guest and his sister Elenor to tour with Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke in the late ’50s. Following a failed 1957 Brunswick Records debut, Elenor and Brenda left to get married and were re placed by yet another cousin, Edward Pat ten, and Langston George. This was the lineup that scored the group’s first hit sin gle, 1961’s “Every Beat of My Heart,” a 9-year-old song by Hall of Famer Johnny Otis.

Photo by Richard Strauss, Smithsonian Institution Rhythm and Blues 53 Tell It Like It Is by Mark Puryear In 1964 The Dixie Cups®, a female vocal trio from New Orleans, crooned out a cheerful version of “Chapel of Love” and knocked the Beatles from their number one spot on the pop charts. A year later, the trio released “Iko Iko,” a song first released in 1954 by James “Sugar Boy” Crawford as “Jock-A-Mo,” whose lyrics recount the meeting of two groups of Mardi Gras Indians. Since then, this song has been cov- ered by artists from the Grateful Dead to Cyndi Lauper, and continues to move new generations with its infectious New Orleans rhythms. The career of The Dixie Cups, and their direct and indirect roles in carrying rhythm and blues (R&B) into mainstream consciousness, speaks to the enduring pow- er of this music to transcend region and musical category and become a representative sound of the country. Musical Crossroads by Dwandalyn Reece The National Museum of African American History of musical genres, highlighting musical innovations, and Culture (NMAAHC) was established by an act of significant time periods and events along with Congress in 2003 making it the nineteenth museum historic performances to capture the music’s impact of the Smithsonian Institution.
