Contexto Internacional vol. 40(3) Sep/Dec 2018 http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0102-8529.2018400300006 Queering the Debate: Analysing Prostitution Through Dissident Pereira & Freitas Sexualities in Brazil Amanda Álvares Ferreira* Abstract: The aim of this article is to contrast prominent discourses on prostitution and human trafficking to the context of prostitution in Brazil and local feminist discourses on this matter, un- derstanding their contradictions and limitations. I look at Brazilian transgender prostitutes’ experi- ences to address an agency-related question that underlies feminist theorizations of prostitution: can prostitution be freely chosen? Is it necessarily exploitative? My argument is that discourses on sex work, departing from sex trafficking debates, are heavily engaged in a heteronormative logic that might be unable to approach the complexity and ambiguity of experiences of transgender prostitutes and, therefore, cannot theorize their possibilities of agency. To do so, I will conduct a critique of the naturalization of gender norms that hinders an understanding of experiences that exceed the binary ‘prostitute versus victim.’ I argue how both an abolitionist as well as a legalising solution to the is- sues involved in the sex market, when relying on the state as the guarantor of rights to sex workers, cannot account for the complexities of a context such as the Brazilian one, in which specific concep- tions of citizenship permit violence against sexually and racially marked groups to occur on such a large scale. Hillard/Sizemore Special Issue Black Girls and Womyn Matter: Using Black Feminist Thought to Examine Violence and Erasure in Education Ayana Tyler Hardaway, Ph.D. Temple University LaWanda W.M. Ward, J.D., Ph.D. The Pennsylvania State University Diamond Howell University of Wisconsin-Madison As students, Black girls and womyn share a collective history of marginalization and discrimination within the P-20 education system. They disproportionately experience violence in educational settings; however, they continue to be understudied. This theoretical essay presents support for using Black Feminist Thought as an analytical framework for examining legal and policy discourses that shape and inform institutional responses to campus violence towards Black undergraduate womyn at Historically White Institutions and disproportionality in disciplinary measures for Black girls. We use this framework to explore how disciplinary and legal practices disregard intersectional identities, which results in the privileging of whiteness while rendering Black girls and womyn invisible. Implications are shared based on theoretical strategies, which promote the advancement and success of girls and collegiate Black womyn. Decolonizing Post-Colonial Studies and Paradigms of Political Economy: Transmodernity, Decolonial Thinking, and Global Coloniality RAMÓN GROSFOGUEL UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Can we produce a radical anti-systemic politics beyond identity politics? Is it possible to articulate a critical cosmopolitanism beyond nationalism and colonialism? Can we produce knowledges beyond Third World and Eurocentric fundamentalisms? Can we overcome the traditional dichotomy between political-economy and cultural studies? Can we move beyond economic reductionism and culturalism? How can we overcome the Eurocentric modernity without throwing away the best of modernity as many Third World fundamentalists do? In this paper, I propose that an epistemic perspective from the subaltern side of the colonial difference has a lot to contribute to this debate. It can contribute to a critical perspective beyond the outlined dichotomies and to a redefinition of capitalism as a world-system. In October 1998, there was a conference/dialogue at Duke University between the South Asian Subaltern Studies Group and the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group. The dialogue initiated at this conference eventually resulted in the publication of several issues of the journal NEPANTLA. However, this conference was the last time the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group met before their split. Among the many reasons and debates that produced this split, there are two that I would like to stress. The members of the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group were primarily Latinamericanist scholars in the USA. Despite their attempt at producing a radical and alternative knowledge, they reproduced the epistemic schema of Area Studies in the United States. With a few exceptions, they produced studies about the subaltern rather than studies with and from a subaltern perspective. -

Es decir, un análisis de los discursos emanados de la “symbolic elites” con la finalidad de evidenciar la construcción de la alteridad de los negros, en los espacios públicos, a partir del dispositivo de la colonialidad de poder (Quijano 2014). Esto, teniendo en cuenta que las construcciones discursivas están vinculadas a temas raciales, políticos y económicos que responden a procesos sociales e históricos diferentes y complejos. Es un estudio que se hace siguiendo la teoría de la modernidad-colonialidad. Palabras clave: Colonialidad del poder, elite simbólica, alteridad, identidad nacional, racismo. Introducción El estudio de la construcción de la identidad del grupo negro en el Estado-nación de Panamá, desde la perspectiva del análisis de la información emanada de la prensa periodística, entre 1904-1914, es un área escasamente explorado en la historiografía panameña. -
The Ultimate Gender Stereotype: Equalizing Gender-Conforming and Gender-Nonconforming Homosexuals Under Title Vii
KRAMER.DOC 6/29/2004 9:43 AM THE ULTIMATE GENDER STEREOTYPE: EQUALIZING GENDER-CONFORMING AND GENDER-NONCONFORMING HOMOSEXUALS UNDER TITLE VII ZACHARY A. KRAMER* While gay men and lesbians have increasingly gained legal rights in many areas of the law, they have not been as successful in the con- text of employment litigation, specifically in the realm of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Because sexual orientation is not a protected class under Title VII, gender-nonconforming homosexuals—that is, effeminate gay men and masculine lesbians—have utilized the Su- preme Court’s opinion in Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins to argue that they were discriminated against by their employers or coworkers be- cause they failed to conform to gender stereotypes, which is evidence of sex discrimination under Title VII. On the other hand, gender- conforming homosexuals—that is, masculine gay men and feminine lesbians—have, until now, not been able to make this sort of gender stereotyping argument. This note takes up that issue. After broadening the definition of gender to include both an ide- alized (anchor) and an idiosyncratic (expressive) component, the au- thor argues that there is an “ultimate” gender stereotype in play when homosexual employees are discriminated against for failing to con- form to gender expectations. Unlike the previous gender stereotyping theory, however, the ultimate gender stereotype incorporates sexual preference into a homosexual’s expressive gender. The first category identifies largely descriptive differences between Latino men and Latinas.1 The differences focus on the traditional dimensions of political analysis including public opinion, political participation with special emphasis on organizational leadership, and electoral representation. The second category we term prescriptive possibilities. This literature focuses on Latina feminist writings and emerging models of Latina legislative leadership. Unlike the first category noted above, these literatures explicitly develop understandings of the transformative, i.e., institution changing, potential of news ways of conceptualizing the interests of Latino communities and developing strategies of policy advocacy built on the interest intersectionality of Latinas in the American polity. It is this later category that we find the most intellectually rich and most likely to affect the future practice(s) of Latino politics, and especially the role of Latinas in that Latino politics. -

Ríos Burga Vice Presidente ALAS Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos Perú “La identidad latinoamericana implica, desde la partida una trayectoria de inevitable destrucción de la colonialidad del poder, una manera específica de descolonización y liberación: la des/colonialidad del poder”. (Aníbal Quijano Obregón) Hoy 31 de mayo del 2018 Aníbal Quijano nos ha dejado físicamente pero su pensamiento y obra creativa por su fecundidad y originalidad científico social universal y compromiso con la vida y los pueblos del mundo estará siempre presente. Seguir su aporte es conocer el curso de la sociología en América Latina y el Caribe en dialogo y crítica con otras experiencias del continente americano y el mundo. En un primer momento creativo bajo la influencia de Charles Wright Mills realiza un balance de la teoría sociológica clásica y la sociología de su tiempo evaluando temáticas como la modernización, la ideología, la política y la socioliteratura. En un segundo momento desarrolla la crítica del discurso socioantropologico funcionalista, el estructuralismo, la dependencia y del marxismo. En un tercer momento se centra en el debate sobre el capitalismo mundial y la dependencia. Para en un cuarto momento desarrollar una crítica radical del modelo cultural civilizatorio de la modernidad/colonialidad eurocentrista occidental y del neoliberalismo como sistema de poder global. A diferencia del modelo de pensamiento único autoritario neoliberal expresión de la nueva dictadura de las finanzas internacionales1 , Quijano promueve un modelo teórico científico que se construye como episteme y vida desde los propios actores sociales. En su crítica al capitalismo como totalidad histórica ubica las singularidades de América Latina y el Caribe desde un enfoque histórico sistémico relacional estructural y cotidiano. -

GENDERS & SEXUALITIES TERMS All terms should be evaluated by your local community to determine what best fits. As with all language, the communities that utilize these and other words may have different meanings and reasons for using different terminology within different groups. Agender: a person who does not identify with a gender identity or gender expression; some agender-identifying people consider themselves gender neutral, genderless, and/or non- binary, while some consider “agender” to be their gender identity. Ally/Accomplice: a person who recognizes their privilege and is actively engaged in a community of resistance to dismantle the systems of oppression. They do not show up to “help” or participate as a way to make themselves feel less guilty about privilege but are able to lean into discomfort and have hard conversations about being held accountable and the ways they must use their privilege and/or social capital for the true liberation of oppressed communities. Androgynous: a person who expresses or presents merged socially-defined masculine and feminine characteristics, or mainly neutral characteristics. Asexual: having a lack of (or low level of) sexual attraction to others and/or a lack of interest or desire for sex or sexual partners. Asexuality exists on a spectrum from people who experience no sexual attraction nor have any desire for sex, to those who experience low levels of sexual attraction and only after significant amounts of time. Many of these different places on the spectrum have their own identity labels. Another term used within the asexual community is “ace,” meaning someone who is asexual.
