E-mail: [email protected] RESUMO. Este artigo apresenta uma reflexão teórica a respeito do termo ‘deglutição’ utilizado por Oswald de Andrade no Manifesto Antropófago (1928). Nesse manifesto, recortamos o conceito de antropofagia, vocábulo que descreve a devoração do Outro no intuito de absorvê-lo, no afã de assimilar as características das estéticas estrangeiras, e que expressa o impacto dos processos colonizadores na formação da identidade brasileira. Partindo da crítica à civilização europeia (colonialista), Oswald de Andrade, nas entrelinhas de seu discurso sobre a antropofagia, dialoga com as atuais discussões acerca da dependência cultural dos países periféricos. Diante desses apontamentos, nosso propósito é traçar um percurso histórico das leituras e apropriações que o termo ‘deglutição’ sofreu ao longo destes 88 anos, na esteira de estudos de críticos consagrados como Candido, Schwarz e Santiago. Palavras-chave: antropofagia; deglutição; identidade cultural. The discourse of cannibalism as a strategy of building Brazilian cultural identity ABSTRACT. This paper presents a theoretical discussion about the term ‘swallowing’ used by Oswald de Andrade in Manifesto Antropófago (1928). In this manifesto we cut the concept of cannibalism, a word that describes the devouring of the Other in order to absorb it, in his eagerness to assimilate the characteristics of foreign aesthetic, which expresses the impact of colonizing processes in the formation of Brazilian identity. Given the criticism towards the European civilization (colonialist), Oswald de Andrade dialogues, between the lines of his speech on anthropophagy, with current discussions of cultural dependency of peripheral countries. Given these notes, our purpose is to trace a historical background of the readings and appropriations that the term ‘swallowing’ has suffered over these 88 years in the researches of renowned critics such as Candido, Schwarz and Santiago. Vladimir Maiakóvski Campos gerais Dedicar-se a múltiplas tarefas de um mesmo âmbito não mais configura alguma novidade ou motivo de fascínio, seja lá qual for a ocupação do indivíduo que as exerce. Tomemos como campo geral a literatura; não é difícil citar nomes que tenham se dedicado simultaneamente à tarefa crítica, à produção literária e à tradução, para dar um exemplo. Baudelaire, para citar apenas um autor, des- tacou-se não apenas pelas suas traduções de Edgar Allan Poe, mas também pela extraordinária qualidade de sua produção literária, bem como por sua engenhosa crítica parcial. Nesse contexto, fazer um elogio da produção intelectual de Haroldo de Campos (1929- 2003), poeta, tradutor e crítico literário brasileiro, representa puro e entediante exercício de repetição de uma tradição que é antiga e já não guarda mais nenhum frescor. The first cartonera emerged as a response to the debt crisis in Argentina in 2001 when the country defaulted causing the Argentine peso to plummet to a third of its value. The cartoneros, people who make their living salvaging and reselling recyclable materials, became increasingly present in the streets of Buenos Aires. With the onset of neoliberal policies, people mistrusted and rejected everything tied to the government and economic powers and saw the need to build new societal, political, and cultural models. Two such people were the Argentine poet, Washington Cucurto, and artist Javier Barilaro. Distressed by the rising number of cartoneros and the impossible conditions of the publishing market, Cucurto and Barilaro founded Eloísa Cartonera. Thirteen years later, Eloísa is still printing poetry and prose on Xeroxed paper and binding it in cardboard bought from cartoneros at five times the rate of the recycling Gray 241 centers. The cardboard covers are hand-painted in tempera by community members, including cartoneros, and then sold on the streets for a minimal price, just enough to cover production costs.

    Processes and Strategies of Translating Joyce: Stephen Hero as a Case in Point José Roberto O’Shea Abstract: This essay was read by the author as the second Maria Helena Kopschitz Annual Lecture, delivered at The University College, Dublin, James Joyce Centre, on 25 February 2016. The piece starts from an overview of Joyce’s translations in Brazil and proceeds to draw on thoughts stemming from the author’s own experience translating James Joyce’s fiction, especially Dubliners and Stephen Hero into Brazilian Portuguese.
