Miller Scholars who have written about local history hold no consensus on the purpose, value, and even definition of local history narrative. This thesis seeks to move the discussion away from territorial definitions of the term local history narrative and provide a framework for thinking about the field. It argues for a broad interpretation of United States local history narrative and proposes the field of local history be integrated into the academic history curriculum. Drawing on a variety of local history scholarship, the thesis first delineates the development of local history writing from the early colonial narratives, through the nineteenth-century heyday of amateur history writing, across the complicated relationship between amateur and professional history during the twentieth century, to the current spectrum of writings that include those which defy the traditional distinction between amateur and professional history. Turning next to the reflective scholarship of local history, the essay discusses issues that arise in the practice of local history such as community pressure to censor work and the challenges of sharing authority. Finally, this thesis provides a working draft of public local history narrative in a chapter investigating a suffrage convention attended by Lucy Stone and Julia Ward Howe held in 1881 in Cummington, Massachusetts, a small remote hilltown in the foothills of the Berkshires. The narrative v traces the story of Henrietta Nahmer, a separated mother of two, who employed multiple tools when organizing for the cause of suffrage in a community that on the whole offered little support. Henrietta Nahmer’s story offers a case study of suffrage activity on the grass-roots level and invites questions of agency in the context of the organizational strategies of the suffrage leadership. Seeking to provide a history that engages a nonacademic local audience while exploring historical questions, this story of Henrietta Nahmer and the suffrage movement in Cummington demonstrates the challenges and opportunities of contemporary local history narrative. vi TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT .....................................................................................................................................v! BIBLIOGRAPHY ........................................................................................................................152! vii CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Rationale At the time I was entering the Public History program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst I was invited to write a series of essays on the local history of the town of Cummington, Massachusetts. Coincidentally and concurrently the University of Massachusetts graduate program in history began the process of establishing a narrative nonfiction track. In light of this, I decided to write some of my Cummington essays as a Master’s thesis. Thus the focus of the thesis became local history written narrative. Because the history department does not have a local history course or program, my advisor Marla Miller advised I undertake an independent study on local history in order to gain an understanding of the scholarship pertaining to the theory, history, and practice of writing local history narrative. The first chapters of this thesis introducing local history grew out of that independent study. While at first it seemed an introduction to writing local history would entail a straightforward summary of the limited existing literature on local history, it soon became clear that the scholars who wrote about local history (who as often as not did not specialize in local history) held no consensus on the purpose, value, and even definition of local history narrative. Some scholars considered local history to be narratives written by amateurs about their local communities; others appropriated the term to refer to highly academic narratives. In keeping with the few scholars who have tried to reconcile the two perspectives, this thesis seeks to move the discussion away from territorial definitions of the term local history and provide a framework for thinking about the field.1 Thus in Chapter Two I call for a broad definition of United States 1 For these different perspectives, see the following: Carol Kammen, On Doing Local History:Reflections on What Historians Do, Why, and What it Means (Walnut Creek, Calif.: AltaMira Press, 2003); Robert 1 local history narrative and propose the field of local history be integrated into the academic history curriculum. In order to provide an overview of the current landscape of local history narrative, Chapter Three traces the development of local history writing from the early narratives in colonial Anglo-America through its maturation during the nineteenth-century heyday of amateur history writing. It continues across the complicated relationship between amateur and professional history during the twentieth century, to the current spectrum that includes writings that blur the distinctions between popular and academic, and amateur and professional. Because writing public local history requires that the historian work within the local community, Chapter Four considers issues raised in the small but growing reflective scholarship of local history practice. From pressure to censor content to questions of sharing authority with community members, local historians must navigate the complex terrain of writing history for and with the public. Finally, Chapter Five is a draft, by way of example, of writing local history narrative. Centering on a suffrage convention held in Cummington in 1881, the essay follows the life of one of its principal organizers, Cummington native Henrietta S. Nahmer, in an effort to unravel the circumstances that led to the blockbuster event in the small remote town. Written for the local community, the narrative seeks to balance the standards of academia with the requirements of engaging a local audience. In each chapter, this thesis illustrates the continued and varied intersections between academic and local history. Thus, as a whole, this paper provides a rationale for the general inclusion of the practice of writing local history narrative into the academic history curriculum. In this enormously erudite and lengthy volume Carl Bridenbaugh investi- gates the characters, habits, and activities of Englishmen in the half cen- tury before war erupted between King and Parliament, and during which "The First Swarming" and "The Puritan Hegira" took place. He has explored the visual remains of an earlier England, consulted a vast nunm- ber of archives, libraries, and repositories, and scrutinized the evidence afforded by literature, secular and ecclesiastical records, the Statute Book, pamphlets, tracts and sermons. Purely demographical statistics and analysis are not stressed, nor is any attempt made to compare the condition and motivation of English with other colonial peoples, though an occasional note reveals some interest in this. What has been most successfully achieved is a panorama more vivid and extensive than hitherto available, of the island inhabitants on the eve of colonization. The author's easy command of varied material and lively style make this readily and agreeably perceived and understood. Students of both English and early American history should be grateful for the series of pictures of the people in country and town; their ranks of society, health and disease, daily routine and food, community partic- ipation, and their sins against God and man. Three chapters deal with "The Rulers and the Ruled"; "The Faiths of Englishmen"; and "Educated and Cultured English." The chief concern throughout is the portraying of the vexatious and troubles besetting the everyday life of ordinary people in the early seventeenth century; purely constitutional, political and ideological controversies appear only inferentially.

Mencken and Van Wyck Brooks vociferously expounded a deep and profound disenchantment with American art and culture. At a time when American popular entertainments were expanding exponentially, and at a time when European high modernism was in full flower, American culture appeared to these critics to be at best a quagmire of philistinism and at worst an oxymoron. Today there is still general agreement that American arts “came of age” or “arrived” in the 1920s, thanks in part to this flogging criticism, but also because of the powerful influence of European modernism. Yet, this assessment was not, at the time, unanimous, and its conclusions should not, I argue, be taken as foregone. In this dissertation, I present crucial case studies of Constance Rourke (1885-1941) and Gilbert Seldes (1893-1970), two astute but understudied cultural critics who saw the same popular culture denigrated by Brooks or Mencken as vibrant evidence of exactly the modern American culture they were seeking. In their writings of the 1920s and 1930s, Rourke and Seldes argued that our “lively arts” (Seldes’ formulation) of performance—vaudeville, minstrelsy, burlesque, jazz, radio, and film—contained both the roots of our own unique culture as well as the seeds of a burgeoning modernism.

Jan de Vries Changing the Narrative: The New History That Was and Is to Come In the mid-1970s, a broad range of scholars, spanning the ideological spectrum, was actively engaged in what has been called the New History. Some of the participants in this broad movement come under discussion below, but for now it is sufficient to mention the French Annales School, the American New Economic History, the British Marxist Social History, and Historical Sociology in several forms, including modernization theorists, comparative revolutions theorists, and world-systems theorists. The adherents to these different historical orientations disagreed with each other about most substantive matters. Their single point of agreement was a shared feindbegrif—the rejection of narrative history. It inspired Burke to introduce the final volume of the New Cambridge Modern History, which appeared in 1979, with the following declaration: “In the twentieth century we have seen a break with traditional narrative history, which, like the break with the traditional novel or with representational art or with classical music, is one of the important cultural discontinuities of our time.”1 Obviously, no single influence can claim full credit for this historiographical discontinuity, but the most profound factor must be the spread of an uncomfortable feeling that the narrative form greatly restricts the types of possible historical questions and feasi- ble modes of explanation. Narrative history has attached to it, like a ball and chain, the discrete, short-term historical event—l’histoire événementielle. If, by the time of Burke’s writing, several decades of Annales School preaching had done anything, it had undermined the notion that this concept should be the foundation stone of historical explanation.

    The Double Life of St. Louis Narratives of Origins and Maturity in Wade’s Urban Frontier ADAM ARENSON s Richard C. Wade summed up The Urban Frontier: The Rise of AWestern Cities, 1790-1830, his groundbreaking study of western urban development, he found occasion to quote William Carr Lane, St. Louis’s first mayor. In 1825, as Lane pressed the city council for the adoption of new municipal policies, he harkened back to an imagined past, a time when St. Louis “was the encamping ground of the solitary Indian trader.” Envisioning an origin story, Lane said that this first camp “became the depot and residence of many traders, under the organiza- tion of a village, and now you can see it rearing its crest in the attitude of an inspiring city.” Wade, reading across the history of Ohio Valley cities, could recognize Lane’s “history” as the rhetoric of a booster—and yet he delighted in what Lane’s story revealed as well as obscured about St. Louis’s history.1 Wade called Mayor Lane “the town’s most popular and powerful figure,” and “the West’s best student of urban affairs.”2 Such praise also __________________________ Adam Arenson is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Texas at El Paso. Everett Hendrickson Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Sol Cohen, Co-Chair Professor Val Rust, Co-Chair Many if not most historians, and many if not most other academicians who employ history as a significant part of their discourse, form and present their arguments in ways strikingly analogous to those of lawyers in an adversarial legal system. Historians sift through and strategically select from among the legion available facts (“evidence”) to create a proof-based rhetorical narrative in support of the specific interpretation, with the understanding that reviewers, including proponents of competing arguments, will likely contest perceived instances of claim excess. While the central thesis is primarily descriptive, it may be possible to extend its logic to serve as a means of reconciling the literary and referential elements in history. The attempt to integrate those two threads has been a dominant concern in historiography for some decades now. ii The central thesis takes the form of an analogy, itself emerging from a synthesis of numerous reflections by historians and historiographers about their field and subfields. Testing proceeded first through a comparison of the literature on the theory and practice of law and history, then via an examination of zones and instances where law and history considerably overlap, including legal cases where the history of a specific question is the gravamen of the case, notably in some of the landmark education decisions.

    The first Leicester thesis in English Local History William Farrell 14 July 2017 Url: https://elhleics.omeka.net/firstthesis For the first blog post, it seemed appropriate to look at the first thesis in the collection L. A. Parker’s Enclosure in Leicestershire, 1485-1607 awarded in 1948. Leslie Arthur Parker (1917-2005) studied History at University College Leicester from 1936 to 1948. He was clearly a good student, winning the honours prize in 1938 and 1939. Like many current students, he lived around the Narborough Road area, first on Cambridge Street and then on Mavis Avenue. He registered for an MA in Economic History in 1939, but he was not awarded the second degree until 1946/47. His doctorate came the following year. This quick succession of awards is unusual - researching a PhD in a year seems impossible! Perhaps Parker was working on this research through the Second World War, even if he was not formally registered with the University. Parker's choice of subject suggests that W.G. Hoskins was his supervisor, although this is not recorded on the bibliographic record, or on the thesis itself. His topic - enclosure - was the process by which open fields were converted into pasture by landholders, and the common rights of villagers were eroded. It has long been seen as a key development in the agriculture and landscape of England. Hoskins was also working on the history of rural Leicestershire through the 1940s and 1950s, culminating in his famous study of Wigston Magna. Both cited each other’s work and Hoskins thanked Parker in the acknowledgements to The Midlands Peasant.
