(type species) and P. pseudoellipsoideum sp. nov., collected from decaying wood in Guizhou Province, China. The genus is characterized by macronematous, mononematous conidiophores, monoblastic conidiogenous cells and muriform, oval to ellipsoidal conidia often with a hyaline, elliptical to globose basal cell. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU, ITS and TEF1α sequence data of 55 taxa were carried out to infer their phylogenetic relationships. The new taxa formed a well-supported subclade in the family Phaeoseptaceae and basal to Lignosphaeria and Thyridaria macrostomoides. -

Two new species, P. alpina and P. octocy- lindrospora are introduced based on morphological characters and discussed in relation to similar species in the genus. New records are provided from Sporormiella corynespora, S. octomegaspora, P. octomera and P. octonalis. This greatly expands or reduces their geographical distribution ranges, as well as substrate preferences. In addition, a key to the coprophilous spe- cies with 8-celled ascospores is provided. They are cosmopolitan and grow on a large variety of dung types, from the smallest vole dropping to large elephant dung (Ahmed & Cain 1972, Khan & Cain 1979, Doveri 2004, Bell 2005, Barr 2009, Mungai et al. 2012). FIELD1* 1School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, NSW, Australia 2State Key Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology, Institute of Earth Environments, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xi’an, Shaanxi, China Received 26 October 2017; Revised 9 January 2018; Accepted 14 January 2018 ABSTRACT: Understanding the loss of the final few species of Australian megafauna is beset by a paucity of data on human arrival, well-provenanced megafauna, human/megafauna population range and distribution (coexistence and interaction), and the range, scale and impact of environmental changes spanning the human–megafauna period. To overcome these shortcomings, the occurrence and decline of coprophilous fungal spores of Sporormiella in sediments have been used as a proxy for extinct megaherbivores. The Sporormiella evidence is presented as the key indicator of extinction timing and these reports are often from locations where there is no known archaeological record or megafauna remains. However, interpreting fungal spore occurrence is not straightforward, as demonstrated by studies investigating taphonomy, taxonomy and the types of animal dung where Sporormiella occurs. No detailed studies on these problems exist for Australia and no evidence supporting the use of Sporormiella as a valid proxy has been reported. Here we examine the occurrence of Sporormiella spores from Cuddie Springs in south-eastern Australia. Despite a well-preserved suite of megafauna fossils, Sporormiella occurrence is sporadic and frequencies are low. -

Abstract Coprophilous ascomycetes are a diverse group of saprobes, of which many belong to three families, Delitschiaceae, Phaeotrichaceae and Sporormiaceae, within the large order Pleosporales. The natural relationships and circumscription of these families are unclear, especially within the family Sporormiaceae, where the generic delimitation have been questioned. There is also a need to understand how different ecological processes affect species richness and occurrence of coprophilous ascomycetes in general. The aim of this thesis was therefore to test earlier classifications of coprophilous taxa within Pleosporales, using phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences; and to study how the habitat, dung type and herbivores´ food choice may affect the species richness and species composition of coprophilous ascomycetes. A phylogenetic study shows that coprophilous taxa have arisen several times within Pleosporales. -
“Fungi Fimicoli Italici”: an Update on the Occurrence of Coprophilous Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes in Italy with New Records and Descriptions

Mycosphere 2(4), 331–427. “Fungi Fimicoli Italici”, the first monograph on coprophilous fungi from Italy, is regarded as the starting point of a survey on Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes obligatorily or facultatively growing on any kind of dung. All fimicolous species recorded from Italy and described in that work or in subsequent author's papers are listed and their dung sources are mentioned. The occurrence on dung of different genera and species is reported in separate Tables, and their frequency on different types of excrements is discussed and compared with other parts of the world. An update on the families Gymnoascaceae, Microascaceae and Sporormiaceae, and keys to genera of Gymnoascaceae and Microascaceae, and to Italian species of Gymnoascus s.l. and Sporormiella with 8-celled ascospores are provided.
