Peggy Shutes is a music teacher in the State College Area School District where her middle school curriculum focuses on Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and World Folk Music. She participates in several jam groups in Central and Southeastern PA and plays a variety of instruments including the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, and piano. She performs with fiddler Bruce Young in Smash the Windows, and with fiddler Ryck Kaiser in Contra Intuitive, specializing in Irish and Old Time Americana dance music for Civil War reenactment balls and contra dances in PA, MD, and NY. An experienced clinician, Peggy has taught workshops at Folk College, The Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering, HOTAfest, the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Annual Conference, and Penn State University. A native of Boalsburg, Ms. Shutes earned her Bachelor of Science and Master's of Education degrees, both in Music Education from Penn State. ! ! Ryck Kaiser has been playing the fiddle for more than three decades. His main interest has always been Appalachian string band music. He is a well-rounded musician, having studied classical violin for four years with Joyce Pollard and playing in Harrisburg’s West Shore Symphony Orchestra for over fifteen years. He has played in a Cajun band “The Yard Dawgz,” in a western swing band “The Midtown Fiddlers,” and a bluegrass band, “The Grinnin’ Berry Pickers”. He currently performs with “Hot Club du Jour” a Gypsy jazz band, “Contra Intuitive” with Peggy Shutes, “Hey for Four” with Bill Goldberg, Suzanne Gates and Freya Qually. He also performs with pianist Jill Smith at contra dances. With all of these diverse experiences Ryck always thinks of old timey fiddle music as a touchstone. He has accumulated hundreds of tunes from Appalachia and is a composer of tunes in that style.
