His interest is less in providing a totally accurate historic context but more in presenting interesting characters living in historic times. Its no accident that he portrays the powerful as especially vulnerable to destiny, passion and sins of pride and arrogance. The loftiest characters in these stories lose the most in terms of privilege and power. These books were written at a time when Egypts modern rulers were seen as ineffectual, corrupt and personally inmmoral.As mentioned, Three Novels of Ancient Egypt is beautifully bound and printed (complete with silk place holder). There is an interesting forward by novelist Nadine Gordimer in which she includes a favorite quote from literary critic Georg Lukacs. What matters i the historical novel is not the telling of great historical events, but the poets awakening of people who figure in those events. Apt for these three novellas. Wonderful read. As summarized by Matti Moosa, “Mahfouz depicts the family’s unremarkable daily life in minute detail” (144); characters are depicted as partaking in their daily routines, as the opening scenes of nearly every chapter of the first book, “Palace Walk,” exemplify. Still through these everyday delineations, critics cite the author’s ability to depict, according to El-Enany, “the conflict between old and new, or past and present…the conflict between two value systems; one wallowing in the security of age-old tradition, and the other attracted to Western modernity with all its attendant perils” (47).

We rarely reminisce about his dramatic works, and w e occasionally return to the fi lms that came out of his scripts. However, as we read in the memoirs of the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner, fi lm was his fi rst great passion. Maḥfūẓ, adoring the cinema, never wanted to become part of the world of the tenth muse and, incidentally, met in 1947 with the director Ṣalāḥ Abū Sayf, who offered him a collaboration. The romance of the famous Cairo Trilogy’s writer with the world of cinema lasted until 1959, bringing fruit in nearly thirty scenarios. Most of them brought popularity not so much to Maḥfūẓ himself as to the directors and actors who were cast in the main roles. Films such as Al-Fitiwwa, Ğa’alūnī muğriman, Al-Muḏnibūn or Rayā wa-Sakīna are considered to be the most important achievements of the Egyptian cinematography. This paper attempts to look critically at Nağīb Maḥfūẓ’s fi lm output by placing scripts of the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner in the context of his literary prose.     1 Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o (Gikuyu pronunciation: born 5 January 1938) is a Kenyan writer, formerly working in English and now working in Gikuyu. His work includes novels, plays, short stories, and essays, ranging from literary and social criticism to children's literature. He is the founder and editor of the Gikuyu-language journal Mũtĩiri. In 1977, Ngũgĩ embarked upon a novel form of theatre in his native Kenya that sought to liberate the theatrical process from what he held to be "the general bourgeois education system", by encouraging spontaneity and audience participation in the performances. His project sought to "demystify" the theatrical process, and to avoid the "process of alienation [that] produces a gallery of active stars and an undifferentiated mass of grateful admirers" which, according to Ngũgĩ, encourages passivity in "ordinary people". Although Ngaahika Ndeenda was a commercial success, it was shut down by the authoritarian Kenyan regime six weeks after its 2 opening. Ngũgĩ was subsequently imprisoned for over a year. Adopted as an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience, the artist was released from prison, and fled Kenya. In the United States, he taught at Yale University for some years, and has since also taught at New York University, with a dual professorship in Comparative Literature and Performance Studies, and the University of California, Irvine. Ngũgĩ has frequently been regarded as a likely candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. His son is the author Mũkoma wa Ngũgĩ. Biography Ngũgĩ was born in Kamiriithu, near Limuru in Kiambu district, Kenya, of Kikuyu descent, and baptised James Ngugi.
