Rhineland-Palatinate & Saarland 480 Rhineland-Palatinate & Saarland The state of Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz), patched together by the French after WWII, united historically disparate bits of Bavaria, Hesse and Prussia that had only one thing in common – the Rhine (Rhein). The river meanders for 1390km from the Swiss Alps to Rotterdam, but nowhere else has it shaped the land and its people more profoundly than along the 290km stretch traversing Rhineland-Palatinate. Some of Europe’s largest corporations dominate the banks of the Rhine south of Mainz, the state capital. But along here there’s also a grand legacy of the Middle Ages: the magnificent Romanesque cathedrals of Mainz, Worms and Speyer. Northwest of Mainz is the river’s most picturesque stretch, the storied Romantic Rhine, whose vine-clad slopes, medieval hilltop castles and snug wine villages have drawn artists and tourists since the early 19th century. Most of Germany’s wine is grown in Rhineland-Palatinate’s six wine regions: the Ahr Valley, Moselle-Saar-Ruwer, Middle Rhine, Nahe, Rheinhessen and, famed for its German Wine Road, the Rheinpfalz. The region’s wines can all be sampled in a multitude of ambience-laden wine taverns. The local people’s joie de vivre finds expression in the many wine festivals. Tiny Saarland, in the southwest, was once a centre for heavy industry but these days it’s better known for Saarbrücken’s Frenchified urbane charms, and its verdant forests and fields – ideal for hiking and cycling. We rented a car and made a big loop from Frankfurt -Koblenz / Rhine - Black forest / Castles – Munich – Berlin- Frankfurt. • After college she took a job with Honeywell, moved to Germany, got married, and eventually had our first grandchild. • When we visit we always try to visit some new vineyards. • I was surprised how many good red wines were available. So with the help of friends and family we procured and carried this collection over. German Wine - fun facts • 90% of German reds are consumed in Germany. • Very few wine retailers in America have any German red wines. • Most of the largest red producers are still too small to export to USA. • You can pay $$$ for a fine French red or drink German reds for the entire year. • As vineyard owners die they split the vineyards between siblings. Some vineyards get down to 3 rows. Siblings take turns picking the center row year to year. • High quality German Riesling does not come in a blue bottle! German Geography • Germany is 138,000 sq mi or 357,000 sq km • Germany is approximately the size of Montana ( 146,000 sq mi ) • Germany is divided with respect to wine production into the following: • 13 Regions • 39 Districts • 167 Collective vineyard

  • PRMS-Based Physical Modelling for Flood Risk Mapping in the Ruwer and Kyll Basin (Germany)
PRMS-Based Physical Modelling for Flood Risk Mapping in the Ruwer and Kyll Basin (Germany) Local Context In the eighties and nineties of this century disastrous floods have regularly occurred in the drainage basin of the river Mosel and its tributaries causing multimillion EURO damages in terms of ecology as well as economy. Due to the almost complete absence of crusting soils and the quite low proportions of impervious areas surface runoff can’t be blamed alone. Instead, complex interactions bet- ween surface runoff, subsurface flow and even groundwater flow seem to be responsible for flood generation in this region. In the Floodgen study, the Remote Sensing Department of the University of Trier has examined two mesoscale catchment areas – the basins of Ruwer (239 km²) and Kyll (843 km²), other relevant physical data (pedological, geo- two rivers joining the Mosel river near Trier. Subsequent forecasts also indicated a high risk of flooding for the Meuse River basin, affecting Belgium. The magnitude of the floods forecasted for the Rhine River basin increased significantly in this period. The first EFAS notifications were sent to the relevant national authorities starting on 10 July and, with the continuously updated forecasts, more than 25 notifications were sent for specific regions of the Rhine and Meuse River basins in the following days until 14 July. Figure: EFAS flood forecast from 12.07.2021 00:00 UTC Providing early and current maps of flooded areas On 13 July, the CEMS Rapid Mapping component was activated to map the ongoing floods in parts of Western Germany (EMSR517 Mapping Website , EMSR517 Activation Viewer). As a flood peak was foreseen on 16 July for segments of other rivers, CEMS preemptively acquired satellite images of the vulnerable area through Pre-Tasking on 14 July. These early images informed ensuing activations by the CEMS Rapid Mapping component based on the EFAS forecasts for areas in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France.
