4 29 Message From Faculty Executive Director

I am very happy at your interest in the Post Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) of Great Lakes Institute of Management. If you are looking for an international faculty, outstanding peer group and exciting learning experience, you have made the right choice in looking at us.

We at Great Lakes have a vision as to how a PGPM could help develop innovative entrepreneurs, leaders and managers. We believe that leadership should be based on distinct values. We uphold these values through our PGPM. Since this institute is run and owned by students, the involvement of students is one of the key aspects of the culture at the institute. As important stakeholders, they not only involve themselves in the execution of plans but also contribute to evolving plans and strategies. We believe, beyond academic excellence it is essential to provide students with an environment where personal development can be matched with a co-operative, global understanding of both business and the people who conduct it. Our PGPM has been designed for those who seek an intellectual challenge within a stimulating environment. If you are an intelligent, entrepreneurial, self-determined, positive and ambitious person, you will find a place with us. A typical Great Laker is a person with at least 3-4 years experience with the focus on significant career advancement or shift. Great Lakers prefer challenging job roles that will not only justify their previous work experience but also the one year rigorous PGPM program that they undergo at Great Lakes.

Great Lakes Institute of Management is the dream child of Prof Bala V Balachandran of Kellogg School of Management, Chicago. Our institution has achieved tremendous growth since its inception in 2004 and within a short span of 5 years, Great Lakes has made a significant mark in terms of providing top quality MBAs, state of the art corporate training and executive education, consultancy services and research that is focused on India. As the Institute's goal is to become a leading Business School at an international level, we are continuously developing and updating programs of international class and quality. Message From The Director, Admissions

Dear Prospective Great Laker :

If you are reading this, you are one of the many students who appear each year for MBA entrance tests like CAT or GMAT -- all of you aspiring to the holy grail of MBA. However, the path to the portals of top Business schools in India and abroad is fraught with difficulty.

The entire process of selecting the right Business School and applying, needs a great deal of forethought, planning and hard work. We at Great Lakes try to connect our admissions process to the brightest young minds, and help them with the Great Lakes advantage that is presented in this brochure. No wonder we attract the crème-la-crème of aspirants who have made Great Lakes amongst the top 20 B-Schools in India. We wish to be in the top 10 soon.

Established in the year 2004 as part of the vision of our Dean, Prof Bala V Balachandran, Great Lakes addresses the need for providing up-to-date, world-class, innovative management education to develop and mould future global leaders, from participants like you.

Great Lakes emphasises on “Money Value of Time” that is reflected by our one year PGPM as against the conventional two years of other B-Schools. Students’ involvement in Great Lakes’ activities is a key aspect of our culture. As an important stakeholder, you contribute to every aspect of the School, be it Admission, Placement, a HR Conclave, or any other activity, and execute them as well. This not only sets us apart from any other B-School but also makes you a “Business Ready Manager” at the end of the program.

Our vast new 20-acre ‘green’ campus, likely to be the first platinum rated campus in South Asia, houses classrooms containing the latest sophisticated, state-of-the-art learning tools, thus ensuring that both faculty and students make the most of a truly internationally competent and stimulating learning experience.

An MBA from Great Lakes is not a transaction but a journey of a life time relationship, which is why our Dean Prof. Bala is addressed affectionately as ‘Uncle Bala’. With this commitment and focus, our objective is to offer a world-class program delivered by international and Indian faculty of repute, to help you realise your full potential at an affordable cost.

I am sure by now, the Great Lakes advantage is clear and I on behalf of faculty and students of Great Lakes, welcome you to the program and look forward to seeing you in the campus soon.

Prof T N Swaminathan Director Admissions & Associate Professor Marketing

6 27 Life At Great Lakes The Vision & Mission

“One restless nanosecond later, I realised that the time had come and gone, several eventful intervals had Vision Mission strewn their unique emotions and bid farewell, I had missed the bus yet there is no time to pause and whine.” • Provide world-class management education in India Great Lakes Institute of Management aims to seek, mould, polish and Life at Great Lakes is a seamless continuum of activity. Day and night are unfair and obsolete measures of time as the unrelenting develop leaders for changing times. Based on its discipline-based • Develop managers with strategic vision of Great Laker is put through the churn of a hectic schedule so proudly purported. The life of balance is tossed randomly and tested business, technical knowledge and a global core courses it moulds the student to become a “Master of Business without mercy. The beautiful campus provides a serene backdrop to the chaos which we are taught to manage as a precursor to outlook, by bringing together academia of the the real world. The Bajaj Bistro turns into a market for trading ideas and opinions over coffee between lectures and post midnight, Readiness” by a dynamic curriculum of customer-centric electives, highest calibre when the busy Great Laker has just started with his umpteenth assignment/presentation submission. The India Cements providing synergies, and enriching tradition with innovation. • Create dynamic entrepreneurs who can serve as Amphitheater comes to life with busy Patriots (Class of 2010) forming small huddles and figuring out strategies for surviving the perfect role models and leaders for the budding immediate and expected onslaughts. Our faculty, a galaxy of stars and stalwarts from industry and academia (TN Seshan, Bala V managers of tomorrow Balachandran, Seenu V Srinivasan, Paul Prabhaker… to name a few) provide deep insights and generate magical verve in • Provide a gurukulam type of education with otherwise dull and insipid management concepts. Armed with new perspectives and a broadened vision, the Great Laker has special emphasis on human, cultural and ethical started his journey on attaining a Global Mindset with Indian Roots. Events like the HR Conclave, SWIM (Successful Women in aspects of the business organisation Management), L'attitude 13º05' -- Great Lakes' annual B-Fest and Great Lakes NASMEI Marketing Conference have brought to the campus revered thinkers and achievers from the corporate world. These valuable interactions provide students with a cutting edge perspective and sharp insights to the current global happenings. The academic curriculum is also sprinkled with several Power Talks from CEOs and functional heads.

“Play the Game. Irrespective.” Evenings are a time to play. The basketball and volleyball courts are agog with excitement and the competition is intense. The tension is palpable over the deciding points in a table tennis match on at the Bajaj Piazza, which also hosts a well equipped 24x7 gymnasium. The badminton court has an impatient queue and the regular joggers are burning calories invariably soothed by an i-Pod playing music of choice into their ears, with Capital Budgeting techniques and Porter’s Five Forces frequently serenading their thoughts. The campus surrounded by natural beauty of metaphorical standards provides the perfect setting for a casual evening walk and a time to reflect. The hostel at night adorns a quaint look with lights piercing through the colorful window curtains of the rooms. The beehive is buzzing with activity tackling the endless pages assigned as pre-reads for the morrow. Sleep is the last thing on their minds.

“Don’t look away. Lend a helping hand. For humility, tolerance, kindness, and compassion are in short supply.” The Karma Yoga initiative of Great Lakes is a unique social responsibility program where students adopt a particular village and work towards chalking out and executing welfare plans with the help of the residents. A dedicated effort envisioned at achieving tangible improvements is made, which is finally evaluated and graded as a mandatory part of the course. This effort is guided by faculty and local public administration but entirely driven by the students, and aims at inculcating the need for paying back our debt to society.

“Bring out your best. Come together, share and learn with Clubs and Committees” Great Lakes being a student driven institute, propagates the aggregation of like-minded individuals in making a marked difference to individual knowledge. Every student has to be a part of a committee mandatorily. One can make a choice from Admissions, Placement, Branding and Public Relations, Finance and a host of other committees. In addition, we have clubs like GLICK (Photography Club), Nirvana (The Great Lakes Quiz Club) and GLOW (Great Lakes Orators World), which cater to the thirst of extra curricular pursuits.

“It is always a time to Unite, Rejoice and Celebrate” Student Birthdays are celebrated with much vim and vigor at Great Lakes with cakes and best wishes after the initial round of “birthday bashing” has smoothly concluded. Pongal, Onam, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, and National Festivals like Independence Day are celebrated with great gusto by the students and faculty alike. Sangamitra is the most awaited cultural event. This Intra College affair brings out the creative best from the passionate students and provides a platform to display their unbounded talent. The welcome break from the strenuous schedule is utilised to the maximum. Dances, Songs and Skits are practised for days before the actual program in slots interspersed adroitly with the academic curriculum.

“The time has come; the Stage is set for the Gladiators (Class of 2011)”

Our New Campus Great Lakes Institute of Management (a not-for-profit organization) is now a world class B-School, with the construction of its new ‘green campus’ that is likely to be platinum rated by LEED. The new campus opened its doors for the current batch in May 2009 and is fully functional.

Spread over 20 acres, the lush green campus is a sight to behold. Off the ECR highway, in the picturesque village of Manamai, it is the new breeding ground for global leaders. The institute has been built in the style of the Gurukuls of yore, with an open courtyard structure. At the center towers a gleaming symbol of tranquility. This open space is an ideal place to sit back, unwind and watch the world go by. Fountains at the four corners of the campus enhance the soothing experience. An authentic thatched roof pathway leads to the canteen and the hostel block. A steady breeze blows across every corner of the campus providing refuge from the sweltering Chennai heat.

The main hall -- capable of seating 300 students (can be divided into two classes of 150 when required) -- is augmented by world-class high-end equipment, and blended through an unique Blackboard learning system, that allows students to catch up through recordings.

26 7 Message From The Director, Admissions

6 27 Message From Faculty Executive Director

Our current batch is an exciting mix of students coming from various industrial domains namely Shipping, Healthcare, Manufacturing, FMCG, IT and ITES, Consulting and Telecom.

Recently we have moved into our permanent building which is eco-friendly, energy efficient and a Platinum rated Green campus spread over 20 acres near the famous monument of Mamallapuram near Chennai.
