You are my husband, my soul mate, my best friend; and I can’t wait to discover what the next stage of our ‘PhD-free’ life together holds! ------------------ This research is supported by an Australian Research Training Program scholarship. iii Abstract In July 1994, a handful of devoted but disillusioned Roman Catholics gathered in Sydney, Australia, to explore how they might spark renewal in a Church that simultaneously frustrated their minds and lives yet captivated their hearts and souls. As loyal Catholics, they were determined to avoid being branded rebels, but nonetheless they felt an urgent need for a safe space, beyond church walls, in which they could voice their fears and hopes for the Church they loved. And so, ‘Spirituality in the Pub’ was born – a lay-driven space in which priests, nuns and bishops were welcome, but in which the voices of all participants were to be valued equally, independent of their religious credentials. This thesis explores the outcomes of my ethnographic participation in the ‘Spirituality in the Pub’ (SIP) movement. It introduces a fieldsite that is paradoxically defined by devotion and anger, loyalty and dissent, in which participants (or ‘Sippers’) seek to become ‘honest brokers of conversation’ in a Church that remains bound by a monological imagination – one in which church leaders hold the only voices of authority. Situated within the broader setting of what sociologists have termed the ‘spiritual revolution’ and ‘emerging church’ movements of the late twentieth century, this thesis paints a portrait of one group’s response to the growing crisis of authority they observed in the Catholic Church since the watershed revolution of the 1960s, known as the ‘Second Vatican Council’, or ‘Vatican II’. Choosing not to become paralysed by anger over what they see as the refusal of key church leaders to fully embrace the empowered lay spirituality of Vatican II, Sippers instead attempt to channel this aggrieved passion into a productive energy that maintains their commitment to the spiritual foundations of the Church. Fortifying themselves with the emancipatory resources of the Catholic faith tradition, Sippers draw on the emotional, social and symbolic riches of their religious identity as they strive to remain loyal to the Church, despite the many hurts and frustrations it brings them. Seeking to live ‘imaginatively and creatively’ within the structures of the Church, Sippers form parallel lines in their lives by attending both SIP and Mass; separate but mutually supportive arenas that help them to live within the creative tension of both loyalty and dissent as they work to renew their Church from within. iv This research project advances the body of empirical knowledge regarding the newly developing constructs of ‘loyal dissent’ and ‘religious agency’. At the heart of Sippers’ religious agency lies a conversational methodology that seeks Church renewal by emphasising mutuality and understanding over confrontation and conflict. By fostering a ‘theology of conversation’, Sippers have come to develop their own unique strategies of audibility in an effort to feel heard against the monologic forces of the Catholic Church. The purpose of evolution is to explain away the God of the Bible. The absurd teaching of the Big Bang theory of evolution is that nobody times nothing equals everything. It is a theory that raises an almost endless array of unsolvable problems. It is degrading to humanity, hostile to reasons, and antithetical to the truth that God has revealed. When one starts adapting the Word of God to fit scientific theories based on naturalistic beliefs, he has begun his journey on the road to skepticism. * * * * * Introduction Thanks to the theory of evolution, naturalism is now the dominant religion of modern society. Less than a century and a half ago, Charles Darwin popularized the credo for this secular religion with his book The Origin of Species.

    UNIFICATION OF ITALY 1792 TO 1925 FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY WARS TO MUSSOLINI ERA SUMMARY – UNIFICATION OF ITALY Divided Italy—From the Age of Charlemagne to the 19th century, Italy was divided into northern, central and, southern kingdoms. Northern Italy was composed of independent duchies and city-states that were part of the Holy Roman Empire; the Papal States of central Italy were ruled by the Pope; and southern Italy had been ruled as an independent Kingdom since the Norman conquest of 1059. The language, culture, and government of each region developed independently so the idea of a united Italy did not gain popularity until the 19th century, after the Napoleonic Wars wreaked havoc on the traditional order. Italian Unification, also known as "Risorgimento", refers to the period between 1848 and 1870 during which all the kingdoms on the Italian Peninsula were united under a single ruler. The most well-known character associated with the unification of Italy is Garibaldi, an Italian hero who fought dozens of battles for Italy and overthrew the kingdom of Sicily with a small band of patriots, but this romantic story obscures a much more complicated history. The real masterminds of Italian unity were not revolutionaries, but a group of ministers from the kingdom of Sardinia who managed to bring about an Italian political union governed by ITALY BEFORE UNIFICATION, 1792 B.C. themselves. Military expeditions played an important role in the creation of a United Italy, but so did secret societies, bribery, back-room agreements, foreign alliances, and financial opportunism.     ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century.     Fr Peter Morrissey 14 August 1928 - 28 April 2020 ’A home-visiting priest is a Mass-going people’ Through the death of Fr Peter Morrissey, the Sydney church has lost a devoted and humble priest. Aged 91, Fr Morrissey, was one of the oldest priests in the Archdiocese and he will be sorely missed by many, including friends in the parishes that he served with dedication. Born at Hornsby on 14 August 1928, Peter was the second youngest child of John Daniel Morrissey and Stella Gurney (a convert). Mr Morrisey ran a small nursey at Hornsby and was highly regarded for his knowledge of native plants. His Irish ancestors were Hornsby district pioneers, including the Reddy family, who donated land for community benefit – today Reddy Park. Fr Peter attended the Waitara Convent School operated by the Sisters of Mercy, before moving to Eastwood Marist Brothers, where he left, aged 15, with the Intermediate Certificate. He initially worked on a sheep station as a rouse-about and then he went to Leeton where his sister, who worked for Australian Women’s Land Army, secured him work as a general farm hand. He returned to Sydney and worked in a clerical position at Johnson and Johnson. In 1947, after being interviewed by Cardinal Norman Gilroy, Peter commenced studies at Springwood, where first he undertook the Leaving Certificate. After matriculation he commenced theology studies. The motivation to devote his life in service to God had been inspired by Fr Mick Farrell of Waitara Parish. In an interview on Australia Day this year for an upcoming history of his final parish, Mortlake, Fr Morrissey recalled: I felt I could be storing up Grace for heaven … rather than working for material/secular interests, which had no value by comparison.

His Excellency arrived in Sydney on Tuesday, March 4 and was met at the airport by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature, Msgr. Jude Thaddeus Okolo, by Brother Laurie Needham cfc, Executive Director of Catholic Religious Australia, and by Rev. Fr. Liem Duong of the Archdiocese of Sydney. The Papal Representative also met the Members of the Permanent Committee of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC). The President of the ACBC, Archbishop Philip Wilson, warmly welcomed Archbishop Lazzarotto on behalf of the Australian Bishops, expressing best wishes for his mission in Australia. Prior to meeting the Members of the Permanent Committee, Archbishop Lazzarotto paid a courtesy visit to Cardinal Edward Clancy. The same morning, he also met Cardinal Edward Cassidy, with whom he renewed old memories of their acquaintances. He was also received by an eight-man delegation of the Bishops of the Oriental Rite in Australia, including the four Catholic Oriental Rite Bishops. Archbishop Lazzarotto flew to Canberra on Wednesday and was met by the Deputy Chief of Protocol of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Mr. Colin Hill. Shortly after, following customary diplomatic procedures, and in preparation for the presentation of his Credential Letters, Archbishop Lazzarotto met Ms Lyndall McLean, Chief of Protocol, and other DFAT Officials. It is expected that in the next few days the Apostolic Nuncio will present his Letters of Credence to the Governor-General of Australia, Major General Michael Jeffery.

    Plenary wrap-up – May, 2011 The following is a record of proceedings and discussions which took place at the Plenary Meeting of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference between May 6-12, 2011. The Mass of the Holy Spirit was concelebrated on Friday 6 May in the chapel of Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney at 7am. The President of Conference, Archbishop Philip Wilson, was the principal celebrant and preached the homily. The President welcomed the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Guiseppe Lazzarotto who was warmly greeted. As is customary for each Plenary, religious leaders from CRA (Catholic Religious Australia) were present as observers for all of the sessions. These leaders were Sr. Anne Derwin rsj (Sister of St Joseph); Fr Timothy Norton svd (Divine Word Missionary); and Sr Marie Duffy rsm (Sister of Mercy). In a particular moment, the Bishops remembered fondly but with deep sadness their brother Bishop Joseph Angelo Grech, who died suddenly late last year (28 December) of a blood disorder. His contribution to the life of the Australian Church was recognised, and the Bishops reflected on the difficulty of losing such a talented individual on many of their commissions. The following changes to Commissions were approved: Bishop Peter Elliott retire from the Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life due to commitments to the Personal Ordinariate; Bishop Julian Porteous be seconded to the Bishops Commission for Mission and Faith Formation; Bishop Christopher Prowse be seconded to the Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life; Bishop Christopher Prowse
