Let training commence. Understanding Non-Monogamies, Meg Barker, Darren Langdridge , 2009, 020386980X, 9780203869802. Most social scientific work on intimate relationships has assumed a monogamous structure, or has considered anything other than monogamy only in the context of 'infidelity'. Yet, in recent years there has been a growing interest among researchers and the public in exploring various patterns of intimacy that involve open non-monogamy. This volume gathers contributions from academics, activists, and practitioners throughout the world to explore non-monogamous relationships. Featuring both empirical and theoretical pieces, contributors examine the history and cultural basis of various forms of non-monogamy, experiences of non-monogamous living, psychological understandings of relationship patterns, language and emotion, the discursive construction of mono-normativity as well as issues of race, class, disability, sexuality and gender. This volume will be of interest to academics and practitioners working in the social sciences and anyone who is seeking greater insight into the intricacies of non-monogamous relationships. Snow White: A Kinder, Gentler Telling, Susan Meredith , 2010, 0984286632, 9780984286638. Gram's Fairy Tales presents a series of illustrated chapter books that retain the heart and characters, but not the violence, of the original Grimm tales. The stories are lyrical with touching and funny twists that make them as interesting for the adult reader as they are for children. This version of Snow White tells the tale of a contest with a grand prize of "A Wish Come True" and two top contestants who couldn't be more different: An amber diva who has devoted her life to the pursuit of physical perfection and a pale homemaker with a talent for domestic arts. They can't both win. Or... Can they? The Dragon Syndicates: The Global Phenomenon of the Triads, Martin Booth , 2001, 0786708697, 9780786708697. With unflinching candor, Martin Booth -- Booker Prize nominee and author of the critically acclaimed Opium: A History -- here unfolds the full story of the Chinese Triads, which, according to UN sources, now pose the greatest potential criminal threat the world has ever known. From San Francisco to Amsterdam to Bangkok to Johannesburg, everywhere, everyday, the Triads are turning crimes like extortion, gambling, international prostitution, illegal immigrant smuggling, money laundering, fraud, corruption, arms, and narcotics into vast profits. This comprehensive history of the Triads traces their evolution over more than two thousand years from obscure parochial Chinese brotherhoods to an international criminal organization. It examines the archaic quasi-religious rituals that have for centuries bound the members of this now global fraternity. It recounts the exploits of patriots and outlaws. It explores the Triads' instigation of the Tong Wars in America, their collaboration with the Allies against the Japanese in Malaya, their collusion with the CIA in Vietnam. It chronicles their escalation of the heroin trade to Europe and the United States. It shocks, and it compels. The Winner's Guide on Retail Selling, Peter R. Bol , 1985, 0961391707, 9780961391706. By the late 1960s, in a Europe divided by the Cold War and challenged by global revolution in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, thousands of young people threw themselves into activism to change both the world and themselves. This new and exciting study of "Europe's 1968" is based on the rich oral histories of nearly 500 former activists collected by an international team of historians across fourteen countries. Activists' own voices reflect on how they were drawn into activism, how they worked and struggled together, how they combined the political and the personal in their lives, and the pride or regret with which they look back on those momentous years. Themes explored include generational revolt and activists' relationship with their families, the meanings of revolution, transnational encounters and spaces of revolt, faith and radicalism, dropping out, gender and sexuality, and revolutionary violence. Focussing on the way in which the activists themselves made sense of their revolt, Europe's 1968 makes a major contribution to both oral history and memory studies. This ambitious study ranges widely across Europe from Franco's Spain to the Soviet Union, and from the two Germanys to Greece, and throws new light on moments and movements which both united and divided the activists of Europe's 1968. STRATEGIC INTERTEXTUALITY IN THREE OF JOHN LENNON’S LATE BEATLES SONGS* MARK SPICER his article will focus on an aspect of the Beatles’ compositional practice that I believe T merits further attention, one that helps to define their late style (that is, from the ground- breaking album Revolver [1966] onwards) and which has had a profound influence on all subsequent composers of popular music: namely, their method of drawing on the resources of pre-existing music (or lyrics, or both) when writing and recording new songs. This may at first seem entirely obvious, especially since nowadays such a practice has been adopted routinely by many songwriters and producers, and is in fact the prevailing compositional strategy within certain pop and rock genres, rap being probably the most blatant example. Many rap artists are well known for their so-called “rap versions,” as Tim Hughes has described them, in which a distinctive element of a pre-existing song is lifted out of its original context—typically via digital sampling—and used as the foundation upon which a new song is built.1 Will Smith’s hit “Wild Wild West” (1999), for example, is composed around a sample of the bass-driven main groove from Stevie Wonder’s funk classic “I Wish” (1976); and Eminem’s hit “Like Toy Soldiers” * This essay is based in part on the first chapter of my dissertation, “British Pop-Rock Music in the Post-Beatles Era” (Ph.D. dissertation, Yale University, 2001). An earlier version was presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Music Theory, Columbus, in November 2002.

Abstract Writing on The Beatles has multiplied and diversified to an astonishing extent over the past half century. The contribution of academics to this literature has until recently been modest in volume and impact. However, multidisciplinary scholarship is now producing new insights into such subjects as The Beatles’ reception and their creative and commercial collaborations. Far from there being ‘Nothing you can know that isn’t known’ about The Beatles, scholars have much to explain regarding the band’s value and meaning in the 1960s and beyond. Keywords: 1960s; The Beatles; historiography; popular music For almost as long as people have been writing about The Beatles, they have won- dered whether it was time to stop. Some commentators in the 1960s felt that devoting any attention to them served to inflate the subject out of all proportion.

The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A thesis presented to the University Of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2018 © Piacentino Vona 2018 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States.

2009 Annual Report 1 2009 Annual Report. For yesterday. For tomorrow. 2009 Annual Report 2 The hardships of today will pass. They will be overcome. Solutions will be discovered. Strategies put into action. Successes achieved. And tomorrow will come. Our optimism is not naive. It comes from over 28 years of work — from knowledge and experience; from triumph and adversity; from responding to a changing disease and redoubling our efforts at every step. Our optimism is the foundation of our work. In 2009 that optimism was put to the test. We experienced the unprecedented shift that accompanied a change of administration and enjoyed the fruits of hard-won labors with legislation that uplifted the lives of HIV-positive immigrants. We fell victim to the tumult of an economic crisis that toughened our fight and strengthened our resolve. We expanded our services and fed more people in our dining room than ever before. And we faced the prospect of dwindling resources. We did it all, not for today — for the fight against AIDS will not be won today. We did it all, instead, with the optimism of tomorrow. Because we know that one day — one tomorrow — our fight will indeed be won. That’s why no matter who is in need; no matter how scarce or plentiful our resources; no matter where we find our allies or adversaries in communities and government, GMHC is for yesterday, for tomorrow, and for life.
