The Procuencas project was implemented in Heredia province of Costa Rica. The main problems affecting watershed conservation in the region can be listed as deforestation, degradation due to unplanned urban growth, and the negative impacts of livestock in the area (Redondo-Brenes, Welsh, 2006). Which approach was taken? To overcome these problems, ESPH (Public Services Enterprise of Heredia) was created in 1976 as a public institution and was later transformed into a private institution in 1998. The company also provides electricity, sewage services, and public illumination to a total of 188,000 residents located in three municipalities—Heredia, San Rafael, and San Isidro - within the province of Heredia. ESPH obtains its water from five micro-watersheds - Ciruelas, Segundo, Bermúdez, Tibás, and Pará, which are located in northern areas of the Heredia province (Redondo-Brenes & Welsh, 2006). The Procuencas project was started in 2000 as an initiative of the ESPH. Procuencas is a private PES program for watershed conservation, independent of FONAFIFO (Fondo Nacional de Financiamiento Forestal), and it provides higher payments to the beneficiaries in its region than FONAFIFO does in the rest of the country. The landowners receive $540 per hectare for establishing new tree plantations, $210 per hectare for established plantations, $210 per hectare for forest conservation and regeneration, and $0.8 per tree for supporting the establishment of agro-forestry systems over a period of five years (FONAFIFO 2004, cited in Redondo-Brenes and Welsh, 2006). -

Travel Advisory The current U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory at the date of this report’s publication assesses Costa Rica at Level 2, indicating travelers should exercise increased caution due to crime. Overall Crime and Safety Situation Crime Threats The U.S. Department of State has assessed San José as being a HIGH-threat location for crime directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests. Exercise increased caution in central Limon, Liberia, the Desamparados neighborhood in San Rafael, and the Pavas and Hospital neighborhoods in San José due to crime. Crime is a concern in Costa Rica; non-violent petty crime occurs most frequently. All individuals are potential targets for criminals. The majority of crime and safety threats to the U.S. official and private communities are opportunistic acts of theft. U.S. citizens commonly report theft of travel documents. Theft is common in highly populated and tourist areas, particularly in cases where individuals are not watching personal belongings closely, to include leaving items on beaches or in parked vehicles. -
A New Memphis from the Pantepui, Venezuela (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Charaxinae)

PYRCZ Zoological Museum, Institute of Zoology, Jagiellonian University, Ingardena 6, PL-30060 Krakow, Poland ABSTRACT.- Memphis montesino, n. sp., is described from the Pantepui highlands of southeastern Venezuela. Its systematic status in relation to allied taxa is discussed. KEY WORDS: Amazon, Anaea, behavior, Bolivia, Canaima, Costa Rica, Catasticta, Darien, Dismorphia, Ecuador, endemism, forest refuges, Heliconiinae, Ithomiinae, Memphis montesino n. sp., Panama, Pereute, Peru, premontane forest, Pronophilini, speciation, taxonomy. This is the first species of the genus Memphis Hiibner reported oblique darker line broken at vein Ml; a whitish spot is noticeable on as endemic to the Pantepui region (southeastern Venezuela). the costal margin in the medial area. RESUMEN Se presenta el Catálogo de la Colección expuesta, como de otros al interno del Museo de Celestino Kalinowski del Parque de Las Leyendas, ubicado en la ciudad de Lima. La mayor parte de la colección, de ámbito nacional, proviene de la cantera y de la actividad taxidermica de C. Kalinowski. En el museo se exponen una relación de ejemplares de invertebrados y vertebrados, estos últimos en disposición museográfica ordenada y enmarcada en diseño de dioramas en el contexto de representación de los ecosistemas del país. Se proporciona información taxonómica e índice alfabetico del material biológico, acervo del museo en su conjunto. Palabras clave: museo, ciencias naturales, catálogo, colecciones, vertebrados ABSTRACT The Catalog of the Exposed Collection is presented, as well as of others inside the Celestino Kalinowski Museum of the Parque de Las Leyendas, located in the city of Lima. Most of the collection, of national scope, comes from the quarry and the taxidermic activity of C. Kalinowski. The museum exhibits a list of invertebrate and vertebrate specimens, the latter in an ordered museographic arrangement framed in the design of dioramas in the context of representation of the country's ecosystems. Taxonomic information and the alphabetical index of the biological material, the collection of the museum as a whole, are provided. We explore the influence of each gene region on the support given to each node of the most parsimonious tree derived from a combined analysis of all three genes using Partitioned Bremer Support. We also explore the influence of assuming equal weights for all characters in the combined analysis by investigating the stability of clades to different transition/transversion weighting schemes. We find many strongly supported and stable clades in the Nymphalinae. We are also able to identify ‘rogue’ -

Size, location, density, position, and other important geographic characteristics have re- emerged as central data points in the analysis of political phenomena. In this article, we analyze possible relationships between size (territorial and electoral) and electoral outcomes (competitiveness and participation) in Costa Rica’s 2016 local (canton) elections. In this effort, we seek to revisit a tradition abandoned by some currents of geography, often erroneously associated with geographic determinism and widely criticized by geography researchers since the 1960s. Costa Rica was chosen for the study because it is considered one of the most successful democratic systems in Latin America, and it is now facing important issues about its new decentralization process. Linear Ordinary Least Squares (ols) regressions were used to analyze the 2016 elections in 82 Costa Rican cantones. This article reveals that there are important causal relationships between territorial size and electoral participation/competitiveness in Costa Rica. Conclusion Geographical analyses are crucial to understand voter turnout and competitiveness. Our conclusion could help Costa Ricans create new strategies to further develop their democracy and its decentralization process. Its nearest neighbors are Anguilla, about 80 statute miles (127 km} across the Anegada Passage to the east-southeast and Virgin Gorda, about 13 miles (21 km} due south. Whereas the Virgin Islands are generally mountainous, Anegada reaches perhaps 18 ' above mean sea level and much of the island is considerably lower (D 'Arcy, 1975}. It is about 10 miles (16 km} in length, about 15 square miles (39 km'} in area, oriented along the east-west axis and is just over 2 miles (3.5 km} across the widest point (Fig. 16}. From the south coast and into the Anegada Passage to the southeast extends the Horseshoe Reef, long a hazard to navigation. -

The sample was collected during the Characterization of wild Entomofauna of the Frio river basin jurisdiction of CDMB, in secondary forests in an altitudinal gradient from 1,000 to 2,911 masl. 79 specimens of the family Pieridae were collected, belonging to 13 genera of which Leptophobia had 5 species, and Catasticta and Eurema had 3 species each. We obtained 22 species distributed in six sampling locations, where the highest richness of species was in Diviso Experimental Center with 12 species and Esperanza Experimental Center with 10. The analysis of the inventory quality showed a potential richness of 32.81 species, a proportion of the observed species of 67.05% and a sampling effort of 76.41%. The comparison of inventories for each locality showed a certain similarity between La Nevera, La Mariana and La Judia, and fewer similarities with El Diviso. -

RESUMEN La riqueza biológica de Mesoamérica es enorme. Dentro de esta gran área geográfi ca se encuentran algunos de los ecosistemas más diversos del planeta (selvas tropicales), así como varios de los principales centros de endemismo en el mundo (bosques nublados). Países como Guatemala, en esta gran área biogeográfi ca, tiene grandes zonas de bosque húmedo tropical y bosque mesófi lo, por esta razón es muy importante para analizar la diversidad en la región. Lamentablemente, la fauna de mariposas de Guatemala es poco conocida y por lo tanto, es necesario llevar a cabo un estudio y análisis de la composición y la diversidad de las mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) en Guatemala.
