RESUMEN Se presenta el Catálogo de la Colección expuesta, como de otros al interno del Museo de Celestino Kalinowski del Parque de Las Leyendas, ubicado en la ciudad de Lima. La mayor parte de la colección, de ámbito nacional, proviene de la cantera y de la actividad taxidermica de C. Kalinowski. En el museo se exponen una relación de ejemplares de invertebrados y vertebrados, estos últimos en disposición museográfica ordenada y enmarcada en diseño de dioramas en el contexto de representación de los ecosistemas del país. Se proporciona información taxonómica e índice alfabetico del material biológico, acervo del museo en su conjunto. Palabras clave: museo, ciencias naturales, catálogo, colecciones, vertebrados ABSTRACT The Catalog of the Exposed Collection is presented, as well as of others inside the Celestino Kalinowski Museum of the Parque de Las Leyendas, located in the city of Lima. Most of the collection, of national scope, comes from the quarry and the taxidermic activity of C. Kalinowski. The museum exhibits a list of invertebrate and vertebrate specimens, the latter in an ordered museographic arrangement framed in the design of dioramas in the context of representation of the country's ecosystems. Taxonomic information and the alphabetical index of the biological material, the collection of the museum as a whole, are provided. Data are from 12 years field experience in the country and from Museums specimens. Some new species records are added to Ecuadorian fauna and it is presumed that at least a 10% more of new records will be obtained in the near future. Ecuadorian Pieridae, although in the past many taxa were described from this country, are far from being thoroughly known. One of the most prolific author was Hewitson (1852-1877; 1869-1870; 1870; 1877) who described many species from the collections made by Buckley and Simons . Some of the "Ecuador” citations by Hewitson are pointed out more precisely by the same author (Hewit son , 1870) in his index to the list of species collected by Buckley in remote areas uneasily reached even to-day (V ane -Wright, 1991). An important contribution on Lepidoptera of Ecuador is given by Dognin (1887-1896) who described and listed many new species collected by Gaujon in the Loja area, where typical amazonian and páramo species are included. -

Flexural Stiffness Patterns of Butterfly Wings (Papilionoidea)

A flying insect generates aerodynamic forces through the ac- tive manipulation of the wing and the “passive” properties of deformability and wing shape. To investigate these “passive” properties, the flexural stiffness of dried forewings belonging to 10 butterfly species was compared to the butterflies’ gross morphological parameters to determine allom- etric relationships. The results show that flexural stiffness scales with wing 3.9 loading to nearly the fourth power (pw ) and is highly correlated with wing area cubed (S3.1). The generalized map of flexural stiffness along the wing span for Vanessa cardui has a reduction in stiffness near the distal tip and a large reduction near the base. The distal regions of the wings are stiffer against forces applied to the ventral side, while the basal region is much stiffer against forces applied dorsally. The null hypothesis of structural isom- etry as the explanation for flexural stiffness scaling is rejected. Instead, selection for a consistent dynamic wing geometry (angular deflection) in flight may be a major factor controlling general wing stiffness and deformability. Possible relationships to aerodynamic and flight habit fac- tors are discussed. This study proposes a new approach to addressing the mechanics of insect flight and these preliminary results need to be tested using fresh wings and more thorough sampling. Biology of Anaea Ryphea (Nymphalidae) in Campinas, Brazil

Anaea ryphea uses Croton fioribundus (Euphorbiacae) as its main larval food plant at Campinas, Brazil. Weekly censuses of the immature stages of A. ryphea were conducted from September 1988 to August 1989. Adults and larvae were found only from December through May. Females usually laid one egg per leaf and exhibited no plant height preference. Within individuals plants, most eggs were laid on the inter mediate leaves; they were rare on the lowest and absent on the apical, new leaves. The complete life cycle in the fi eld lasts 50 to 60 days. The pattern of devclopment in A. ryphea is similar to that described for 5 other species of Anaea. The early stages resemble closely those described for A. eurypyle, which also uses a species of Croton as its larval food plant in El Salvador. The genus Anaea Hubner includes most of the Neotropical Char axinae, although use of the generic name varies considerably among authors. Comstock (1961) assigned to Anaea the species now considered members of the Anaea troglodyta group. He used Memphis Hubner, formerly described as a generic name, as a subgenus for most of the other species of Anaea, including the blue species and A. ryphea (Cra mer). Rydon (1971) subdivided the group further, describing Foun tainea, into which he transferred ryphea. -

It is concluded lhat in spite of a long history of doubts expressed by several authors, this is a clearly distinct species. RESUMEN,- Se revisa la situadon laxonomica de Memphis aulica Rober y se describe e Uustra por primera vez, la hembra de csta especie. The genus Memphis (HUbner, 1819) is one of the largest of Neotropical Nymphalidae, as well as being one of the most complex taxonomically, and least understood ecologically and biologically. Around 100 species of Memphis are currently recognised (Coms- tock, 1961, as Anaea, subgenus Memphis; D'Abrera, 1988) which were divided into 8 groups by Comstock (1961). Few species of Memphis are instantly recognisable and the close similarity of many (especially in the "blue" species of Comstocks' groups VI, VII and VIII), coupled with the often considerable within-species variation of superficial characters such as wing shape and color patterns, often makes identification of individual specimens difficult or impossible (DeVries, 1987). -

Much of our current under- standing is based primarily on detailed morphological observations made 50–70 years ago. However, the family and its putative four subfamilies and two tribes, have rarely been subjected to rigorous phylogenetic analysis. Here we present results based on an analysis of molecular characters used to reconstruct the phylogeny of the Pieridae in order to infer higher-level classification above the generic level and patterns of historical biogeography. Ernest John Oslar collected more than 50,000 butterflies and moths and other insects and sold them to many taxonomists and museums throughout the world. This paper attempts to determine his travels in America to collect those specimens, by using data from labeled specimens (most in his remaining collection but some from published papers) plus information from correspondence etc. and a few small field diaries preserved by his descendants. The butterfly specimens and their localities/dates in his collection in the C. P. Gillette Museum (Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado) are detailed. This information will help determine the possible collection locations of Oslar specimens that lack accurate collection data. Many more biographical details of Oslar are revealed, and the 26 insects named for Oslar are detailed. Introduction The last collection of Ernest J. Oslar, ~2159 papered butterfly specimens and several moths, was found in the C. P. Gillette Museum, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado by Paul A. Opler, providing the opportunity to study his travels and collections. Scott & Fisher (2014) documented specimens sent by Ernest J. Oslar of about 100 Argynnis (Speyeria) nokomis nokomis Edwards labeled from the San Juan Mts. and Hall Valley of Colorado, which were collected by Wilmatte Cockerell at Beulah New Mexico, and documented Oslar’s specimens of Oeneis alberta oslari Skinner labeled from Deer Creek Canyon, [Jefferson County] Colorado, September 25, 1909, which were collected in South Park, Park Co. -

Einstein “Se non è vero, è ben trovato” Italian proverb Neotropical diversification, timing and evolutionary causes Timing of the origin and evolutionary causes of the high species diversity of many taxonomic groups in the Amazon Basin and adjacent Guiana Shield lowlands remain highly controversial (e.g. Hoorn et al. 2010, Rull 2011, Hoorn et al. 2011). Most explanations of diversification mechanisms have focused on the role of geographic isolation through vicariance to produce phenotypic divergence (allopatric speciation). The causes of isolation of populations have been explained by several hypotheses (briefly reviewed in Antonelli et al. 2010), the major ones being the Riverine Barrier hypothesis (Ayres & Clutton-Brock 1992), the Marine Transgression hypothesis (Frailey et al. 1988), the Disturbance- Vicariance hypothesis (Colinvaux 1993, expanded by Bush 1994), the Vanishing Refuge hypothesis (Vanzolini & Williams 1981), the Taxon Pulses hypothesis (Erwin 1979), and the Refuge hypothesis (i.a. Haffer 1969, Mayr & O’Hara 1986, Haffer & Prance 2001). The latter, for a long time treated as the definitive driver of the rich Amazonian biodiversity, has recently been strongly criticized on the basis of recent paleoecological and paleobotanical data (i.a. Bush 1994, Rull 2004a, b, Bush & de Oliveira 2006, Hoorn et al.
