Introduction In the United States, rates of death by suicide have increased in the past five decades. Since 1999, the rate of completed suicide has increased 28% (National Institute of Mental Health, 2018). Approximately, 47,173 people in the U.S. died by suicide in 2017, making it the 10th leading cause of death. Although middle-aged adults have the highest rate of suicide, 20.2 per 100,000, older adults (i.e., individuals 60 years and older) closely follow with nearly comparable rates of 20.1 There are no definitive numbers or databases that track suicide attempts, as it would be a violation of patient privacy, but experts estimate that for every one suicide there are 25 attempts (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 2017).

  • Media's Positive and Negative Frames in Reporting Celebrity Deaths
Media’s Positive and Negative Frames in Reporting Celebrity Deaths From Illegal Drug Overdoses Versus Prescription Medication Overdoses By Michelle Wood Submitted to the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science. ____________________________ Chairperson Mugur Geana, Assistant Professor _______________________________ John Broholm, Associate Professor _______________________________ Crystal Lumpkins, Assistant Professor Date Approved: November 14, 2011 ii The Thesis Committee for Michelle Wood certifies that this is the approved version of the following thesis: Media’s Positive and Negative Frames in Reporting Celebrity Deaths From Illegal Drug Overdoses Versus Prescription Medication Overdoses _______________________________ Mugur Geana, Assistant Professor Date Approved: November 14, 2011 iii Abstract This study compared the celebrity illegal drug overdose deaths of River Phoenix, Chris Farley, and Brad Renfro to the prescription drug overdose deaths of Anna Nicole Smith, Heath Ledger, and Brittany Murphy. This research used quantitative conceptual content analysis of news articles from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, People, and Entertainment Weekly. This research discovered whether media used in this study framed prescription drug deaths more positively than illegal drug deaths, which was proved to be true. It also determined media did not employ socially responsible frames when reporting on these deaths. The last question in this research discovered if the type of drug involved in the celebrities’ death influenced the way media portrayed the celebrities’ character. This research proved that, when reporting on negative drug overdoses, media framed celebrities’ perceptions negatively but found no evidence of positive celebrity perceptions when reporting about prescription drug overdoses.

  • Class, Race, Credibility, and Authenticity Within the Hip-Hop Music Genre
Journal of Sociological Research ISSN 1948-5468 2013, Vol. 4, No.2 Class, Race, Credibility, and Authenticity within the Hip-Hop Music Genre Matthew R. Hodgman Dept. of General Education, Goodwin College 1 Riverside Drive, East Hartford, CT, 06118, USA Tel: 1-860-528-4111 E-mail: [email protected] Doi:10.5296/jsr.v4i2.4503 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.5296/jsr.v4i2.4503 Abstract After its advent in the 1970s, the rap music genre was represented almost exclusively by male black artists who honestly and realistically embodied a poor urban image. Images of black urban poverty in music videos and rap lyrics were consistently used by black artists to emphasize and authenticate who they were and where they came from. With the upsurge of white rap acts starting in the early 90s and continuing through the early 21st century, the means by which rap authenticity is measured have been permanently renegotiated. Before the emergence of white rappers, race was the primary signifier of rapper authenticity. After the success of white rappers such as Eminem new parameters of what constitute credibility and authenticity in the rap genre have been forged. This article discusses the significance of the continued presence of white rappers in hip-hop in terms of class and race in relation to artistic credibility within the rap genre. On a larger scale, this article considers questions related to cultural interloping upon a racially concentrated art form. It is concluded that class has generally emerged as the premier indicator or variable of authenticity throughout rap. Keywords: rap music, hip-hop music, Eminem, cultural studies, class studies 1.
