Library Notes tisiana A Carey and Patterson Exchange Barbara S. McCrimmon A letter recently donated to the library contains autographs of two noted Americans of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries: Mathew Carey (1760-1839), publisher and writer of Philadelphia; and William Patterson (1752-1835), shipping merchant of Baltimore. Both were Irishmen who had emigrated as young men and were enthusiastic supporters of the new United States. Carey, born in Dublin, was a printer who had worked with Benjamin Franklin at Passy and was an ardent Irish nationalist. In his two Dublin publications, the Freeman 's Journal (1780) and the Volunteer's Journal (1783) he had challenged British government policy toward Ireland and had been imprisoned for his audacity. In 1784 he was condemned for a second time, but escaped to America. -

SScott’s signature can be found on the deeds of properties along the Mayfield, Hempsford and Rosebank river frontage, in transactions from the late 1790s to the early 1800s. Scott’s letters and journal, and the biography written by his son-in-law John Gibson Lockhart, contain all the information we need to learn about Scott’s family links with Kelso. Visiting the Borders, you might believe that Scott ‘belongs’ entirely to Galashiels, Melrose and Selkirk. His connection with Kelso has been played down for almost 200 years. Kelso’s Scott is the young, brilliant, genuinely unknown Walter who discovered Border ballads and wrote the Minstrelsy, not the ‘Great Unknown’ literary baronet who exhausted his phenomenal energy 30 years later saving Abbotsford from ruin. Guide books often say that Scott spent a single summer convalescing in the town, or limit references to his stays at Sandyknowe Farm near Smailholm Tower. The impression given is of a brief acquaintance in childhood. -

Mulderig “[W]hat can the best character in any novel ever be, compared to a full- length of the reality of genius?” asked John Gibson Lockhart in his 1831 review of John Wilson Croker’s edition of Boswell’s Life of Johnson.1 Like many of his contemporaries in the early decades of the nineteenth century, Lockhart regarded Boswell’s dramatic recreation of domestic scenes as an intrusive and doubtfully appropriate advance in biographical method, but also like his contemporaries, he could not resist a biography that opened a window on what he described with Wordsworthian ardor as “that rare order of beings, the rarest, the most influential of all, whose mere genius entitles and enables them to act as great independent controlling powers upon the general tone of thought and feeling of their kind” (ibid.). -

Mathew Carey’s Douay-Rheims Bible by Nicholas Mario Bruno1 Penniless and exiled, a young printer, disguised as a woman to avoid arrest by the English, sailed to Philadelphia with the Marquis de Lafayette. When the ship arrived in Philadelphia, Lafayette introduced Carey to George Washington and other influential Americans who lent him $400 to set up a printing shop. This young printer, Mathew Carey, would be very influential in early American printing. This paper will examine his life and some of his most influential work both as an American printer, dedicated to creating a nationalistic literary identity, and his work as a Catholic, printing the Mathew Carey Bible during an important era for the Catholic Church in America. Background of Mathew Carey Although known mainly for his work in America, Carey was not born in America; he was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1760. He started his career as a journalist in Ireland. At the age of 19, Carey advocated the repeal of the British Penal Code against Irish Catholics in an anonymous pamphlet. When the British government offered a reward for the author of the pamphlet, Carey fled for France where he met Benjamin Franklin. After a year in France, Carey returned to Ireland but again got into trouble with political authorities – this time for his views on economic policy. Carey, who supported tariffs, published a cartoon of a British official who opposed a tariff bill being hanged for treason. Robert Burns Towards the end of January 1813 the young Edinburgh publisher George Goldie brought out a new book-length poem, The Queen's Wake. Somewhat unpromisingly, the book was by a little-known and impecunious former shep herd called James Hogg, whose recent attempts to launch a career, first as a farmer and later as a journalist, had ended in failure. Unexpectedly, the poem was very well received by reviewers and by the reading public, and by the au tumn of 1814 both fame and fortune appeared to be within the grasp of the author of The Queen's Wake. -

Initially Waverley published anonymously in 1814 as Scott's first venture into prose fiction, Waverley is often regarded as the first historical novel. It became so popular that Scott's later novels were advertised as being "by the author of Waverley". His series of works on similar themes written during the same period have become collectively known as the "Waverley Novels". In 1815, Scott was given the honour of dining with George, Prince Regent, who wanted to meet "the author of Waverley". It is thought that at this meeting Scott persuaded George that as a Stuart prince he could claim to be a Jacobite Highland Chieftain, a claim that would be dramatised when George became King and visited Scotland.[1] Illustration to 1893 edition, by J. jeffersons rivals: the shifting character of the federalists roberf mccolley Our first national political association, after the revolutionary patriots, was the Federalist Party, which controlled the Federal government for twelve years, and then dwindled rapidly away. Within its brief career this Federalist Party managed to go through three quite distinct phases, each of which revealed a different composition of members and of principles. While these are visible enough in the detailed histories of the early na tional period, they have not been clearly marked in our textbooks. An appreciation of the distinctness of each phase should reduce some of the confusion about what the party stood for in the 1790's, where Jeffersonians have succeeded in attaching to it the reactionary social philosophy of Hamilton. Furthermore, an identification of the leading traits of Feder alism in each of its three phases will clarify the corresponding traits in the opposition to Federalism. i. federalism as nationalism, 1785-1789 The dating of this phase is arbitrary, but defensible. Programs for strengthening the Articles of Confederation were a favorite subject of political men before Yorktown. In 1785 a national movement began to form. Several delegates met in that year at Mount Vernon to negotiate commercial and territorial conflicts between Virginia and Maryland. In formally but seriously they also discussed the problem of strengthening the national government. These men joined with nationally minded lead ers from other states to bring on the concerted movement for a new Constitution.1 The interesting questions raised by Charles Beard about the motives of these Federalists have partly obscured their leading concerns, and the scholarship of Merrill Jensen has perhaps clarified the matter less than it should have. -

COPYRIGHT AND THE PROFITABILITY OF AUTHORSHIP - * EVIDENCE FROM PAYMENTS TO WRITERS IN THE ROMANTIC PERIOD MEGAN MACGARVIE, BOSTON UNIVERSITY AND NBER, AND PETRA MOSER, STANFORD UNIVERSITY AND NBER JULY 31, 2013 Proponents of stronger copyright terms have argued that stronger copyright terms encourage creativity by increasing the profitability of authorship. Empirical evidence, however, is scarce, because data on the profitability of authorship is typically not available to the public. Moreover, at current copyright lengths of 70 years after the author’s death, further extensions may not have any effects on the profitability of authorship. To investigate effects of copyright at lower pre-existing levels of protection, this chapter introduces a new data set of publishers’ payments to authors of British fiction between 1800 and 1830. These data indicate that payments to authors nearly doubled following an increase in the length of copyright in 1814.
