Recently I reached the conclusion that there is no Buddhism or Zen or anythjng. When I was preparing for the evening lecture in San Francisco yesterday, I tried to find something to talk about, but I couldn't; then I thought of the story 1 was told in Obun Festival when I was young. The story is about water and the people in Hell Although they have water, the people in hell cannot drink it because the water burns like fire or it looks like blood, so they cannot drink it.

The source of our self-nature Is the Buddha of innocent truth. Mental and physical reactions come and go Like clouds in the empty sky; Greed, hatred, and ignorance appear and disappear Like bubbles on the surface of the sea. When we realize actuality, There is no distinction between mind and thing And the path to hell instantly vanishes. If this is a lie to fool the world, My tongue may be cut out forever. Once we awaken to the Tathagata-Zen, The six noble deeds and the ten thousand good actions Are already complete within us. 1 In our dream we see the six levels of illusion clearly; After we awaken the whole universe is empty. No bad fortune, no good fortune, no loss, no gain; Never seek such things in eternal serenity. For years the dusty mirror has gone uncleaned, Now let us polish it completely, once and for all. Who has no-thought? Who is not-born? If we are truly not-born, We are not un-born either. Ask a robot if this is not so. How can we realize ourselves By virtuous deeds or by seeking the Buddha? Release your hold on earth, water, fire, wind; Drink and eat as you wish in eternal serenity.

												  What Is a KoanWHAT IS A KOAN AND WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT? Jeff Shore Koan practice is a catalyst to awaken as Gautama Buddha did. Early Chan (Chinese Zen) encounters and statements are precursors of koans. Eventually these impromptu encounters and statements led to the practice of focusing on the koan as one’s own deepest question. The point is to directly awaken no-self, or being without self. This was done through rousing the basic religious problem known as great doubt. This doubt calls into question the very nature of one’s being, and that of all others. Over time, koan cases and commentaries developed to explore and express awakening from a dream world or nightmare of isolation and opposition. Particularly in Japan, koan curricula developed to foster awakening and to refine it in all aspects of life. Scholars have examined koan practice in light of its history, texts, social and political contexts, and sectarian conflicts. The aim here is to clarify what koans are and how they are used in authentic practice. The koan tradition arose out of encounters between teachers and disciples in Tang Dynasty (618-907) China. The koans now used in monastic training and in lay groups worldwide grew out of this tradition. Admirers tend to consider koan practice a unique and peerless spiritual treasure. Critics see koan practice as little more than a hollow shell. There are good reasons for both views. By inviting readers to directly open up to their own great doubt, this paper provides a sense of what koan practice is from the inside.

Honolulu: University Press of Hawaii, 1973 . In Unsui Eshin Nishimura and Bardwell Smith have put together a thoroughly delightful volume on Zen Buddhist training and monastic life. The book combines ninety-six comic, cartoonlike color drawings by Giei Sato (1920- 1970)- an "ordinary Rinzai Zen temple priest"- with Nishimura's running commentary, and a useful introduction by Bardwell Smith which underlines the paradox of tension and harmony characterizing Zen Buddhist monastic life. Taken as a whole, from its appreciative Foreword by Zenkei Shibayama to its Glossary, the book provides a helpful counterpoint to the standard popular work in this area, D.

He who recites poems at his death Adds frost to snow. --- Mumon Genshen, d. 1390 Scott Eberle's book, The Final Crossing, has an intriguing subtitle: "Learning to Die In Order to Live." Last week, he and Meredith Little shared their 4-step rite of passage (as taught at Meredith's School of Lost Borders and derived from native American traditions) for those on the cusp of death: 1. Decision Road, when you become conscious of the fact that your time to die is close at hand, and begins to muster the strength to accept and embrace that fact; 2. Death Lodge, where the focus is on "completing" your relationships with the living: to forgive and be forgiven, to express thanks and love, and to say goodbye; 3. Purpose Circle, a period of deep introspection, of "ruthless self-honesty without judgement" in which the goal is to make peace with yourself and your life, to realize a sense of integrity rather than despair; and 4. Stepping Into The Ballcourt, which is an in-between-worlds transitional phase where one is completely open to and ready for the "final crossing" to arise (or however we choose to imagine death). This parallels the spiritual process which many Buddhist meditators seek to undergo, as Scott laid out: 1. Setting the intention of your practice, especially through making vows; 2. Learning to let go of your attachments and unresolved conflicts; 3.

Abstract Visual and Material Culture at Hōkyōji Imperial Convent: The Significance of “Women’s Art” in Early Modern Japan by Sharon Mitsuko Yamamoto Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art University of California, Berkeley Professor Gregory Levine, Chair This dissertation focuses on the visual and material culture of Hōkyōji Imperial Buddhist Convent (Hōkyōji ama monzeki jiin) during the Edo period (1600-1868). Situated in Kyoto and in operation since the mid-fourteenth century, Hōkyōji has been the home for women from the highest echelons of society—the nobility and military aristocracy—since its foundation. The objects associated with women in the rarefied position of princess-nun offer an invaluable look into the role of visual and material culture in the lives of elite women in early modern Japan. Art associated with nuns reflects aristocratic upbringing, religious devotion, and individual expression. As such, it defies easy classification: court, convent, sacred, secular, elite, and female are shown to be inadequate labels to identify art associated with women. This study examines visual and material culture through the intersecting factors that inspired, affected, and defined the lives of princess-nuns, broadening the understanding of the significance of art associated with women in Japanese art history.
