Pick your Poison: Gin & Dubonnet Happy 90th Birthday, and World Gin Day, your Majesty! “Let us not take ourselves too seriously. None of us has a monopoly on wisdom”. Queen Elizabeth II Her Majesty the Queen is 90 years old today and, to top off an already EPIC day, it is also World Gin Day!!! For me, this is even more exciting than Christmas and my birthday! In celebration of this momentous day, I have made our Liz’s tipple of choice and, funnily enough, it contains Gin! How good is that?! Lizzie is such a trendsetter, she was in on this Gin revolution long before any of us mere mortals were. It’s a simple drink – Gin & Dubonnet – but a great one, and The Queen is said to have one very day before Lunch. Technically, by drinking one of these every day, The Queen has over the recommended weekly allowance for alcohol here in the UK. She is now my hero, and has had a Gin every day and made it to 90 years old. I told you all Gin is medicinal… So, without further ado, here is the recipe for Gin & Dubonnet. Ingredients 25ml Gin (I used Silent Pool Gin) 50ml Dubonnet (Dubonnet is a type of Fortified Wine. It has Cherry, Qunine, Citrus and Toffee notes in it and, to me, this drink tastes a little bit like a spin on a Sangria!) A slice of Lemon Ice Method 1. Place the Gin and Dubonnet in a Cocktail shaker. -

Recent changes to the temporary reserve programs signal that minimum price supports and strategic stockpiles for wheat and rice are expected to continue in the near-term. State officials reason that full silos at home will translate into stable prices abroad. MY2018/19 rough rice production is forecast at 204.3 million tons, down more than 2 percent from MY2017/18, on a sharp decline in harvested area. MY2018/19 corn production is forecast at 223.0 million tons, up 3 percent from MY2017/18 on expanded area. Abstract Expressionism New York inspired cocktails Manhattan | £12.00 Canadian Club, Antica Formula, Angostura bitters Popular history suggests that the drink originated at The Manhattan Club in New York. It was invented for a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome (Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Winston). The success of the dinner made the drink fashionable and prompted guests to request it by referring to its place of creation: ‘the Manhattan cocktail’. However, Lady Randolph was in France at the time, and pregnant, so the story is likely fiction… or maybe not? Moscow Mule | £12.00 Sipsmith vodka, lime juice, ginger syrup topped up with ginger beer The cocktail was invented in 1941 by hotel proprietor John G Martin and by Jack Morgan of Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer. These two created their own ‘Little Moscow’ in New York’s happening Chatham Hotel. Sazerac | £11.50 Redemption Rye, Absinth, Angostura, Peychaurds bitters Some claim it’s the oldest known American cocktail. The defining feature of the Sazerac is its method of preparation which commonly involves two chilled old-fashioned glasses… The first glass is swirled with absinthe for flavour and scent. The second glass is used to combine the remaining ingredients with ice. It is then stirred and strained into the former glass. Millionaire | £12.00 Havana 3 year old rum, sloe gin, apricot brandy, lime juice, grenadine This is the original Millionaire Cocktail No.1 from Harry Craddock’s famous 1930 ‘Savoy Cocktail Book.’ Income Tax | £12.00 Sipsmith gin, Noilly Part, Martini Rosso, orange juice The origins of this cocktail are unknown, though some have surmised that taxes can sometimes be a bitter experience. -

Towner has directed the band ever since then, although Bob Wolfers- berger, Topeka, has shared the respon- sibility as a co-director since the 2012-2013 season. Now in its 20th year, the New Hori- zons Band of Lawrence was founded after Dr. Roy Ernst visited Lawrence in 1997 and presented a video to a group of interested musicians and directors of the Lawrence Senior Center. -
