Fitgen TUKS TOP 10 Atletiek Skole Indelings / School Sections 2019 Welcome Dear Principals,Welkom Athletes and visitors A warm word of welcome to all participants, spectators and principals of participating schools. This is the 13th year that Prestige College is hosting the TOP 10 Athletics meet. We are privileged this year to have FitGen as the main sponsor of the event. We are also very pleased to have this event again at TUKS LC de Villiers Stadium. This is a super facility and we appreciate the involvement of the staff and other re- sponsible parties who contribute greatly to the organization and hosting of this event. Mr Hendriks and his team are the promoters of this event since 2006. He coined this “Top 10” idea and has never given up on it ever since. I sincerely appreciate the sacrifice of time and effort from all the Prestige College staff who contribute to the success of this event. The kitchen staff, sport staff and teaching staff are all valued for the unique roles they all play to benefit this event. Last year our athletes were inspired by meeting Usain Bolt personally at Ruimsig Stadi- um. That was just the injection one needed, to inspire everybody. The words he spoke was no different from what teachers and coaches say all the time but coming from the legend himself finally stuck. “Skill is only developed by hours and hours of hard work – there is no quick fix that can replace that" -- Usain Bolt. We hope that today will be another moment of inspiration for everybody who participates and gives their best. Participants are already the cream of the crop in the participating schools and therefore their presence give more flair to the event. It surely is the place where you will find the top athletes in our country competing for that special time or distance or place. For me, winning is not everything – it is what we learn in the process that matters most. Tom Landry said: “I’ve learned that something constructive comes from every defeat.” May we all enjoy the wins and learn from the losses. To have come this far makes you a top athlete anyway. With appreciation Mrs. H.C. The 2018 JPC Senior Drama class is an exceptionally talented group of actors and it is because of their talent that this hugely challenging and provocative play was selected to showcase their talents. I encourage you to attend one of the two performances. You will not be disappointed. SCHOOL FEES I extend my sincere thanks to all parents who pay school fees. We attempt to keep these to a minimum. The reality for us is that without them it would be impossible to maintain the very high standard of education John Paul College provides. SIGN OUT PROCESS: SICKBAY It has come to my attention that many students are contacting parents direct to collect them from school when they are feeling unwell. The process at John Paul College is for students to come to the nurse in the sickbay to be assessed and if required, the nurse will make contact with the parents to collect the child and sign the child out.

Its source materials are numerous archival collections, newspapers and over 40 personal interviews. This study addresses two questions relating to F.W. de Klerk's use of the referendum mechanism in 1992. The first is why he used the mechanism, highlighting its role in the context of the early stages of his quest for a managed transition.

CONFORMITY AND CONFLICT: AFRIKANER NATIONALIST POLITICS IN SOUTH AFRICA, 1948-1961 by John Lazar Balllol College Oxford University Michaelmas Term, 1987 One of the principal themes of this thesis is that it is incorrect to treat M Afrikanerdom" as a monolithic, unified ethnic entity. At the time of its election victory in 1948, the National Party (NP) represented an alliance of various factions and classes, all of whom perceived their Interests in different ways. Given, too, that black resistance to exploitation and oppression increased throughout the 1950s, apartheid ideology cannot be viewed as an immutable, uncontested blueprint, which was stamped by the NP on to a static political situation. The thesis is based on four main strands of research. It is grounded, firstly, in a detailed analysis of Afrikaner social stratification during the 1950s. The political implications of the rapid increase in the number of Afrikaners employed in "white-collar" occupations, and the swift economic expansion of the large Afrikaner corporations, are also examined. The second strand of research examines the short-term political problems which faced the nationalist alliance in the years following its slim victory in the 1948 election. Much of the NP's energy during its first five years in office was spent on consolidating its precarious hold on power, rather than on the imposition of a "grand" ideological programme. Simultaneously, however, intense discussions - and conflicts - concerning the long-term implications, goals and justifications of apartheid were taking place amongst Afrikaner intellectuals and clergymen. A third thrust of the thesis will be to examine the way in which these conflicts concretely shaped the ultimate direction of apartheid policy and ideology.

MORE TAL K │ EDITIO N 12 │ 26 APRIL 2019 MORE TALK │ EDITION 1 2 │ 26 APRIL 20 19 WEEKLY SCRIPTURE SWEPT AWAY I t ’ s the early hours of Easter Monday morning (01:36 to be precise) and I am awakened from my much - needed beauty sleep by an unusual sound! Has the dog jumped into the pool? Alarmed by this confusing thought I groggily sprint all of four meters, tear back th e curtains and stare at the body of still water. No dog. But…the sound continues. It is an unusual sound to be sure. Ears now awake, I make my w ay t o the opposite window and stare out. There in the dark, broom in hand is my dear wife! She’s ankle deep in wat er chasing the rain’s downpour towards the now unblocked drain. Satisfied, I returned to bed …ha, ha – just kidding. Whilst supporting my wife’s endeavours (at that very hour) I got to thinking how Noah’s generation must have felt struggling to hold bac k the unstoppable rising waters of God’s radical purging. No number of brooms would succeed as the sovereign God metered out Hi s e nd t o an evil world. Social media pinged relentlessly regarding this weekend’s devastation; highlighting again and again all t hat was being swept away. Despite mankind’s natural tendencies God is merciful, and He makes a promise when the waters receded that man and anima l w o uld never endure a flood of that magnitude again. With the recent reminder of our heavy rainfalls, may we a l l hu mb ly acknowledge and recognise His divinity and authority over all.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS 03 NOVEMBER 2017 03 November 2017 Tel: 011 531 1800 | [email protected] www.stmarysschool.co.za FROM THE HEAD’S DESK As we approach the final weeks of the school year, it is usual for the management team and me to reflect on the value and intent of our academic and co-curricular offering. The St Mary’s model of education includes character development as a key element in what we want to achieve and we, therefore, place emphasis on participation in the co-curricular programme and on leadership. The many and varied opportunities on offer create the context in which the girls can discover and form their individual selves. Academic achievement is pursued and celebrated but we believe that our girls must use their ability and potential to be useful in the world and contribute to the enhancement of our society. We believe that the aspects of our programme and approach, as outlined below, are of value in building character. The mentor groups provide a small group gathering where relationships can be formed across age groups and teachers can monitor the girls’ schedules and general well-being. This daily routine and familiarity should present a safe environment in which the girls can explore their experiences and personal development. From Form III, the girls have opportunities to Karabo (captain) and Samantha (vice-captain) celebrating as St Mary’s wins inter-high athletics for the 10th consecutive year lead in different ways with the fashion show as the first experience of developing autonomy and taking responsibility for a major event.
