In March, the Intergovernmental IPanel on Climate Change released a new scientific assessment with one important and sobering assertion: Climate change is here, now. “Adaptation and mitigation choices in the near-term will affect the risks of climate change throughout the 21st century,” the report says, a reminder that we can do more to reduce our energy use and the resulting carbon emissions.

Using portraits of Mrs. Nieman’s mother and father as references, he worked with cut pages from Nieman Reports and from the Foundation’s archival material to create this likeness. About the portrait on page 6: Alexandra Garcia (left), NF ’13, an Emmy Award-winning multimedia journalist with The Washington Post, based her acrylic portrait with collage on the photograph of Agnes Wahl Nieman standing with her husband, Lucius Nieman, in the pressroom of The Milwaukee Journal. The photograph was likely taken in the mid-1920s when Mrs. Nieman would have been in her late 50s or 60s. Garcia took inspiration from her Fellowship and from the Foundation’s archives to present a younger depiction of Mrs. Nieman. Office of Planning 2 a new day for the anacostia preface The Anacostia River has long been considered Washington’s “other” river—one that divides our city, our region, and our Nation’s Capital economically, geographically, racially, and socially. For more than 20 years, many individuals, organizations, and agencies have worked passionately and tirelessly in the face of huge challenges and much resignation to address these injustices and improve the condition of this River and its tributaries. Today, the once-forgotten Anacostia has been rediscovered and embraced as a precious resource by our community’s residents and by local and regional government leaders. During these years much has been achieved. The discharge of raw sewage is being addressed, wetlands are being restored, and trash has been reduced. For the first time, a comprehensive restoration plan now exists. The Anacostia Waterfront Initiative has helped catalyze $3 billion of investments along the Capitol Riverfront. New and improved riverside parks are providing new civic spaces for rest, relaxation, and recreation in the midst of a congested urban environment. Through it all, DC Appleseed, its dedicated staff and extraordinary Board, have played a critical leadership role. Their 1999 report called for the District government to improve its stormwater management and administration and adopt an impervious surface fee. In 2003, they led the way in calling for the development of a compre- hensive Anacostia restoration plan.

MODERNISM ON TRIAL: AN ANALYSIS OF HISTORIC PRESERVATION DEBATES IN CHICAGO Stephen M. Mitchell 119 Pages May 2014 This thesis explores preservation issues regarding modernist architecture in Chicago. As urban and public history research, the project examines the new questions brought to the forefront by recent controversies over the preservation of modernist architecture. Modernism, and an “all concrete” variant known as “Brutalism,” popular in the mid-twentieth century, aimed to remove ornament and historical references common in neoclassical, neo-Gothic, Beaux Arts, and Art Deco architecture and replace them with minimal, clean, glass-and-steel buildings. Modernists who, on principle, did not believe in preservation of past forms are now in the unlikely position of making such an argument for their own buildings. Never widely embraced in the first place, Brutalism’s concrete façades seemed less and less to reflect aesthetic tastes as architects turned back toward historicist styles by the 1980s.

    DOC SEVERINSEN BIO Conductor/Trumpeter Heeeeere’s Johnny!” That lead-in, followed by a big band trumpet blast, was the landmark of late night television for three de- cades. The ‘Johnny’ was Johnny Carson, the announcer was Ed McMahon and the bandleader was Doc Severinsen. Beginning in October 1962, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson ruled the night air for thirty years. On May 22, 1992, it came to an end… Within a week of the final telecast, Doc Severinsen and His Big Band were on the road, and to this day, audiences across America love and respect Doc and his big band, not just because he shared their living room with them for so many years, but because of Doc’s love of the Big Band repertoire. His musicianship keeps this iconic American music fresh to this day. Their repertoire includes Ellington and Basie standards, pop, jazz, ballads, big band classics and, of course, The Tonight Show theme. Severinsen can still blow hard with his horn, and hit the high notes, a result of his continued commitment to the practice studio and the refinement of his craft. But as a band leader, Doc continues to surround himself with the best in the business, and he’s only too happy to give them a turn in the spotlight. A Grammy award winner, Doc has made more than 30 albums–from big band to jazz-fusion to classical. Two critically acclaimed Telarc CDs with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra showcase his multifaceted talents from Bach to ballads. The Very Best of Doc Severinsen reprises fifteen of Doc’s signature pieces.
