Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

The most famous of them were the post-spring 1968 Pilote, Charlie Mensuel (debut issue in February 1969), L’Écho des savanes (May 1972), Métal Hurlant (January 1975), and Fluide glacial (May 1975). 02 There appeared simultaneously a handful of more or less short-lived titles— including Zinc (1971-1974), Le Canard sauvage (1973-1974), Mormoil (1974-1975)— whose quick or not-so-quick demises stemmed from insufficiently attractive contents and/or faulty distribution.

  • O Entretenimento Como Arte Séria: a Revista MAD E a Crítica Ao Consumismo
Palavras-chave: Indústria Cultural; Arte Séria; Arte Leve; Revista MAD; Consumismo Abstract This article establishes the connection between MAD magazine, a North America humor magazine, and the hybridization between ight art and serious art, according to Andreas Huysen’s thoughts. The two art spheres will face problems with the current culture industry concept and its set of ideas. In the sequence, we will approach the general characteristics of the magazine as we look for a synthesis with the ideas we present. In summary, the article will discuss the theme of consumerism, which appears several times in the publication, as a form of critical engagement, which is an attribute of serious art, as a reaction to the domination mechanisms of a society based on the consumerism culture.

SAUNDERS, OCT 1 2017 I recently sat down with Robert Sikoryak, who typically works under the name R. Sikoryak, to discuss his recent project The Unquotable Trump. Building on the artist’s expertise at adapting great works of literature to the comic book format, the collection of retooled iconic covers uses Trump’s bombastic quotes cast against fantastic scenes to satirize the U.S. president and his policies. With this explicitly political project, Sikoryak joins the ranks of other cartoonists who have turned their pen into a weapon against the billionaire reality-TV host-turned-leader of the free world, from Stephen Byrne’s ‘Trump Rally’ to Pia Guerra’s Bannon-Trump ‘Big Boy’ to the feminist anthology ‘Resist’. In many of Sikoryak’s depictions, Trump assumes the role of a super-powered antagonist, such as a winning- obsessed Magneto taking on the ‘Ex-Men’, an apish campaigner chastising ‘The Black Voter’, and a Dr. Doom-like overlord trying to nab some ‘Hombres Fantásticos’ (all of which reprise famous covers from Marvel ComicsThe ( Uncanny X-Men,The Black Panther, and The Fantastic Four, respectively).
