Over the last two years, thanks to your generosity, we have raised an amazing £120,000 to help fund two villages in Kenya. Your donation is already at work creating businesses and jobs in the villages of Ntirimiti, near Mount Kenya, and Ngulini, some 100km East of Nairobi. This year, we hope to raise money for our Fund For Fearless Women. The Fund will support women in East Africa and Afghanistan to change their world for the better – to challenge the accepted way of doing things and the cultural norms that say 'no, you can’t’ and ‘no, you shouldn’t’. Hand in Hand can help women beat the odds and succeed as entrepreneurs. The money they earn and the confidence they gain changes everything. Whole families and communities rise with them. We work in four key stages. First, we create Self-Help Groups where women support each other, save together and learn together. Next, we provide business and skills training that helps make the most of their potential. Third, we make sure they can get loans and the tools they need to get started. Last, we help scale up their businesses, reaching bigger markets and stronger supply chains. With our help and your support, here’s just some of what they’ve achieved per project so far: • 30% average increases in income • 99% of women report more freedom and influence at home • 95% of families have savings to see them through a crisis like coronavirus Check out the silent auction; there’s a signed shirt from McLaren, a stay at a flat in Cornwall plus many more exciting lots to choose from. And don’t forget the prize draw for a chance to win a stunning Orbit No.3 diamond necklace by Swiss jewellers, Montluc. 90% of the money raised will go to Hand in Hand and 10% will go to the ACT Educational Trust to provide bursaries for students. His unique style of investigation has looked into everything from celebrities to the US prison system, far-right groups to adult films. His simple yet direct style has revealed the personalities, lifestyles, loyalties and beliefs of those often misunderstood, writtenoff or ignored. Starting out in print journalism, Louis moved to television as a correspondent on TV Nation, Michael Moore’s ground-breaking documentary series examining the strange, dangerous and controversial elements of American life. Louis then joined the BBC to develop his Weird Weekends series. Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends established his signature style, putting himself at the heart of the subject, often in quite dangerous and compromising positions. He's trained with American wrestlers, mixed with gang members, and interviewed those on the fringes of society. He also spent time with self-help gurus, out of work actors, and rappers. Rejecting the more confrontational style of other documentarians in favour of an informal, curious, unassuming approach, his work is consistently revealing, informative and entertaining. Returning to the UK, Louis followed Weird Weekends with When Louis Met… in which he spent time with a range of unusual celebrities from Ann Widdicombe to Chris Eubank to Neil and Christine Hamilton. He also famously made a film about Jimmy Savile, a production often cited in the subsequent revelations about the TV and radio presenter’s abusive history. Louis returned to the subject over a decade later, when Savile’s crimes were public, in a very personal re-examination simply titled Louis Theroux: Savile. Louis has also looked at dementia, South African extremists, gambling, transgender issues in children, motherhood, eating disorders and cosmetic surgery. Other famous exposés and acclaimed investigations have included The Most Hated Family in America, The City Addicted to Crystal Meth, Extreme Love – Autism, and Louis Theroux's LA Stories. He produced a feature-length attempt to examine the secretive world of Scientology in My Scientology Movie, and descrcibed many of his experiences on and off camera in his book Gotta Get Theroux This: My Life and Strange Times in Television. The Most Revd and Rt Honourable Justin Welby The Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013. He was previously Bishop of Durham, Dean of Liverpool Cathedral and a Canon of Coventry Cathedral, where he worked extensively in the field of reconciliation. Archbishop Justin has three main priorities for his ministry – Evangelism and Witness; Prayer and the Renewal of Religious life; and Reconciliation. BBC doc-maker and journalist Louis Theroux teams up with director John Dower and double Academy Award winning producer Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar, Man On Wire) to explore the self-mythologizing Church of Scientology. Following a long fascination with the religion and with much experience in dealing with eccentric, unpalatable and unexpected human behavior, the beguilingly unassuming Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church’s headquarters is turned down. Inspired by the Church’s use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the organization, Theroux uses actors to replay some incidents people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. In a bizarre twist, it becomes clear that the Church is also making a film about Louis Theroux. Suffused with a good dose of humor and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE is as outlandish as it is revealing.

TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH MICHAEL MOORE Michael Moore is the most famous, controversial, and commercially successful documentary filmmaker working today. The notoriety surrounding his films has obscured the fact that he is a gifted director who uses a wide range of cinematic techniques to engage, entertain, and provoke his audience. Sicko , his widely acclaimed, no-holds barred attack on the American healthcare system, uses the issue of healthcare to explore larger questions about what kind of country America is. In this discussion presented by the Museum of the Moving Image in collaboration with Variety , Moore spoke passionately about the many questions raised by his film. • Why Documentaries Matter Recognised As an Innovative Cultural Form
RISJ CHALLENGES CHALLENGES Documentaries have for many decades inhabited the schedules of public Why Documentaries Matter Why broadcasters. They have chronicled the lives and institutions of western democracies. In the past two decades, however, documentaries have become Why Documentaries Matter recognised as an innovative cultural form. Instead of being exclusively funded by television channels, documentaries receive money from a number of sources, including film funds, private investors and foundations. Rather than observing, documentaries are now thought capable of changing the world. Is this what they really do? How do we define a documentary? What does it mean to be the ‘author’ of a film? Nick Fraser has been editor of the BBC’s Storyville series since 1997; here he looks at the history of documentaries, showing how definitions of documentaries have changed – and how fragile is their funding. If we want good documentaries, he concludes, we have to find ways of encouraging their creators. “Nick Fraser writes about documentaries with unique authority. Not only has he made some good ’uns, he has commissioned more than practically anyone else on earth (for the BBC’s Storyville) and - as this book shows - he Nick Fraser has watched docs from their earliest days. His ideas on what the growth of the web and the decline of public service broadcasters mean for doc-makers are informed, imaginative and challenging.” Brian Lapping Chairman and Executive Producer, Brook Lapping “The rise of documentaries over the past two decades owes more to Nick Fraser than to any other single person. For so many of us who make non-fiction films, Nick’s peerless brand of tough love and mischievous curiosity have inspired us to aim higher as we try to promote greater understanding of the major events and issues of our time.” Eugene Jarecki Documentary film maker “This expert lament is beautifully written.

  • Introduction Matthew H
Michael Moore: Filmmaker, Newsmaker, Cultural Icon Matthew H. Bernstein, Editor http://press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=192221 The University of Michigan Press, 2010 Introduction matthew h. bernstein With the premiere of his popular debut ‹lm Roger & Me in late 1989, Michael Moore proved himself an astonishingly successful non‹ction ‹lmmaker. Thir- teen years later, Bowling for Columbine’s extraordinary box of‹ce performance and its Academy Award for Best Documentary con‹rmed Moore’s standing as a cultural commentator to be reckoned with. In the intervening years, Moore diversi‹ed his output: he became a best-selling book author, TV show pro- ducer, and media personality. When Fahrenheit 9/11 premiered in June 2004, following its winning the Palme D’Or at Cannes, Moore certi‹ed his status as a ‹lmmaker, newsmaker, icon, and political celebrity larger than any one of the ‹lms, books or TV shows he produced or the website established and main- tained in his name. For 20 years and counting, Moore has served as a comic, unof‹cial, har- ried, and harrying spokesperson for the disenfranchised working class and liberal and leftist Americans—a single-handed critic of corporate America and an answer to the rise of Fox News. He had also become a lightning rod for conservative criticism and personal attacks long before he attempted to in›uence the outcome of the 2004 American presidential election with Fahrenheit 9/11. And while 2007’s Sicko was not nearly so ambitious as the 2004 opus—and it’s worth recalling that no other theatrical non‹ction ‹lm has ever tried to dethrone a sitting American president—Moore’s 2007 movie inaugurated a more intensive phase in America’s ongoing efforts at healthcare reform that the Obama administration and Congress have begun to address through legislation.

Take the survey Academic rigour, journalistic flair Louis Theroux’s new Jimmy Savile documentary is a horrible misstep October 3, 2016 4.01pm BST Author Karen Boyle Chair in Feminist Media Studies, University of Stirling Theroux the looking glass. BBC The original BBC documentary by Louis Theroux in 2000 about Jimmy Savile, the former British TV star thought to have sexually abused at least 500 women and children, was uncomfortable viewing even before his crimes were common knowledge. Watching with the benefit of hindsight, one moment that really sticks out in When Louis Met Jimmy is when Theroux finds a notepad with his ex directory phone number on it. “There’s nothing I cannot get,” Savile tells him. Theroux revisits the moment in his new documentary, Louis Theroux: Savile. It is a statement of Savile’s power that helps us understand why his victims – a number of whom Theroux interviews in the film – found it so difficult to speak out while Savile was alive. Some are clearly still haunted by their failure to do so. Theroux mostly acts as witness to their testimonies, aware of his own complicity in the mythmaking that ensured their silence for so long. Yet as much as these victims deserve to be heard, the way their testimonies are framed is troubling.
