Jaargang 73 4 Vervlakt de intonatie? Ouderen en jongeren met elkaar vergeleken Vincent J. van Heuven - Fonetisch Laboratorium, Universiteit Leiden Ouderen kunnen jongeren vaak maar moeilijk verstaan. Ze praten te snel, te slordig en vooral te monotoon, zo luidt de klacht. Zou dat wijzen op een verandering? Wordt de Nederlandse zinsmelodie inderdaad steeds vlakker? Twee onderzoeken bieden meer duidelijkheid. Ik heb twee zoons in de adolescente leeftijdsgroep, zo tussen de 16 en de 20. Toen ik ze nog dagelijks om me heen had (ze zijn inmiddels technisch gesproken volwassen en het huis uit), mocht ik graag luistervinken als ze in gesprek waren met hun vrienden. Dan viel op dat alle jongens, niet alleen de mijne, snel spraken, met weinig stemverheffing, en vooral met weinig melodie. Het leek wel of ze het erom deden. Een Amerikaanse collega, die elk jaar een paar weken bij mij logeert om zijn Nederlands bij te houden, gaf ongevraagd toe dat hij in het algemeen weinig moeite heeft om Nederlanders te verstaan, behalve dan mijn zoons en hun vrienden. Een paar jaar eerder was ik in een onderzoek beoordelaar van de uitspraak van 120 Nederlanders, in leeftijd variërend van puber tot bejaarde. Mij viel op dat de bejaarden zo veel prettiger waren om naar te luisteren. Niet alleen spraken ze langzamer dan de jongeren, maar vooral maakten ze veel beter gebruik van de mogelijkheden die onze taal biedt om de boodschap met behulp van het stemgebruik te structureren. -

Phone (64)-4-385 5541 ext. 6469 Fax (64)-4-389 5319 Email: [email protected] Abstract Background: A method for systematically identifying, selecting, and ranking high quality movies for public health training does not exist. We therefore aimed to pilot a method and use it to generate an initial selection of suitable movies in a range of public health categories. Methods: To identify possible movies, systematic searches were undertaken of two large movie databases. If meeting minimal criteria for entertainment value (using public and critic ratings), the movies were then systematically evaluated for training suitability. Results: Using the search strategy we developed, it appeared feasible to systematically identify movies of potential educational value for public health training. Out of a total of 29 movies selected for viewing and more detailed assessment, the top ranked 15 were selected as having reasonable potential for training. There was a high correlation between scores of the movie assessors (Spearman’s rho = 0.80, p<0.00001). Also 75% of the top 15 movies were found to be referred to in Medline-indexed publications. Conclusion: This pilot study was able to develop a method for systematically identifying and selecting movies that could potentially be used for public health training. -

After months of painstaking preparations, he managed to enter the buildings during the night and string a wire between the two towers. For the next 45 minutes, Philippe Petit walked, danced, kneeled, and laid down on the wire - an expeirence he had dreamt of ever since he read about the Twin Towers six years before. Using contemporary interviews, archival footage, and Philippe’s own creations, this film tells the story of Philippe’s previous walks between towers such as the Notre Dame and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Viewers learn about his passions, his friendships, and how he accomplished his Twin Towers walk, from getting the wire into the towers and hiding from guards to mounting the wire and taking the first step. The result is a story of daring, beauty, dedication to the point of insanity, loyalty and heartbreak, and the firm belief that nothing is impossible. Antropol. 37 (2013) 4: 1327–1338 Original scientific paper The Popularization of the Ethnological Documentary Film at the Beginning of the 21st Century Nik{a Svili~i}1 and Zlatko Vida~kovi}2 1 Institute for Anthropological Research, Zagreb, Croatia 2 University of Zagreb, Academy of Dramatic Art, Zagreb, Croatia ABSTRACT This paper seeks to explain the reasons for the rising popularity of the ethnological documentary genre in all its forms, emphasizing its correlation with contemporary social events or trends. The paper presents the origins and the de- velopment of the ethnological documentary film in the anthropological domain. Special attention is given to the most in- fluential documentaries of the last decade, dealing with politics: (Fahrenheit 9/1, Bush’s Brain), gun control (Bowling for Columbine), health (Sicko), the economy (Capitalism: A Love Story), ecology An Inconvenient Truth) and food (Super Size Me). The paper further analyzes the popularization of the documentary film in Croatia, the most watched Croatian documentaries in theatres, and the most controversial Croatian documentaries. It determines the structure and methods in the making of a documentary film, presents the basic types of scripts for a documentary film, and points out the differ- ences between scripts for a documentary and a feature film. Finally, the paper questions the possibility of capturing the whole truth and whether some documentaries, such as the Croatian classics: A Little Village Performance and Green Love, are documentaries at all. Building on more than three decades of the Institute’s championing of independent stories focused on the environment, these grants to support new projects are led by founding support from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and include additional support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Kendeda Fund, Discovery Channel, Code Blue Foundation and the Joy Family Foundation. Elon, “Salt”, Piedmont and Lithium Dreams – Part 1 This is part 1 of a multi part series that will be written between now and 2023. I will follow both Tesla’s and Piedmont’s lithium journeys with interest. If I am wrong, it will be my pleasure to write a mea culpa as I have done before. Since being a guest on TC and Georgia’s Podcast a few weeks ago, I have been exposed to the anti Tesla crowd for the first time. I made it clear before agreeing to participate that I have no axe to grind with Tesla or Elon Musk other than the nonsensical statements about lithium made on Battery Day. The hosts of Chartcast were absolutely professional with me and have been on all the episodes I have listened to. I would not hesitate to be a guest again in the future. What I was not prepared for was the small percentage of what appear to be slightly unhinged Chartcast listeners that decided I needed to hear their “Elon rants”. That is no fault of the podcast hosts. At some level Tesla seems a cult on par with the best on them. We live in a celebrity culture driven largely by social media and inCreasingly shorter “news cycles”. A world where facts are often hard to come by and comments, no matter how far off base, by someone like Elon Musk will be taken as “gospel” by a significant percentage of his ~ 40 million twitter followers. Elon along with “sidekick of the moment” Drew Baglino shared the Battery Day stage to declare their latest magic trick - creating “instant lithium”.
