Sheehan has built the NKU women’s soccer program into one of the nation’s best, and he is 200-47-13 in those 12 seasons with the Norse.

Last season, Sheehan’s Norse amassed a 16-4 record and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, advancing to the second round before being ousted by Wisconsin-Parkside, who accounted for three of NKU’s four defeats on the year. Sheehan also produced his first All- American since 2005 in Brandi Doss, who ranked second in the nation with 0.75 assists per game.

In 2007, Sheehan led the Norse to a 12-6 record and their 10th consecutive trip to the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. Under Sheehan’s direction the Norse captured the GLVC title in six of their first 10 seasons, including a string of five straight from 1998-2002.

Three years ago, Sheehan guided NKU to a 13-4-1 record and a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.

Sheehan was named GLVC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career in 2005, and he also earned Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors after leading NKU to its seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

In addition, NKU senior forward Kristen Votapek was named to the NSCAA’s NCAA Division II All- America second team. Votapek also was named GLVC Player of the Year and earned Scholar All-America honors.

In 2004, Sheehan led NKU to a 15-5-1 overall record. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the sixth straight year and finished with a No. 21 national ranking in the Division II poll.

Six years ago, Sheehan guided the Norse to a 17-3-4 record. NKU also earned its fifth straight NCAA Division II Tournament berth and advanced to the national quarterfinals. The Norse finished with a No. 8 national ranking in the NCAA Division II poll.

Seven seasons ago, Sheehan led NKU to a 20-1-2 record and its fifth consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and spent most of the season ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll.

Eight years ago, Sheehan guided NKU to a 22-2 record. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the third straight year. During the regular season, NKU jumped to No. 1 in the national poll for the first time in history.

In 2000, Sheehan led NKU to a 21-2-2 record and guided the Norse to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse finished as national runner-up and were ranked No. 2 nationally in the final NSCAA coaches poll.

Prior to taking the NKU job, Sheehan spent 13 years as head coach at St. Ursula Academy in Cincinnati

In net, the Norse look to a young group of players led by sophomore Stephanie Glass, who saw action in six games last season with four saves. Freshmen Cassie Lingenhoel and Rachael Wood will battle for playing time between the posts for Sheehan’s squad.

The midfield will be anchored by a pair of seniors for the Norse in Amie Noll and Brandi Doss.

“Amie Noll has nice size and strength on the ball,” said Sheehan of the second-year transfer from Morehead State. “She possesses some nice leadership skills from the middle of the field.

“Brandi Doss has really improved in her years here. She had 15 assists last year, which is a really, really good year.”

Doss averaged 0.75 assists per game last season, ranking second in all of Division II.

“She also plays with good pace, serves a nice ball, contributes to the defense, and gets into the attack,” Sheehan said.

The NKU offense looks to be one of the most balanced in the league as well, with Kendall Day and Kara Costello each chipping in six goals on the season while Kelly Sullivan and Amanda Mason had five markers apiece.

“Mason can really score goals and in the spring season, we sort of pushed her more forward than she had played last fall,” Sheehan said of the All-GLVC performer. “As a result she was our leading scorer in our spring training contests. Granted, the spring games don’t count, and you’re not really keeping statistics formally, but it was a good sign that she was able to score some goals.”

Sullivan is the top returning scorer for the Norse with five goals and nine assists last season.

Kelly Snead, who was an excellent two-way player for the Norse in 2008, scored three goals and added four assists as a reserve.

Junior transfer Danielle Houge, who scored eight goals in two seasons as a reserve at Western Kentucky, and freshman Sarah Smith will look to shore up the Norse attack.

The key for the Norse in 2009, though, will be health, as untimely injuries in past seasons have spelled doom for the NKU teams of the past few years.

“Hopefully,” quipped Sheehan, “we’ll have everybody back healthy as close as we can to the preseason and as a result, we’re looking to have another strong season.”

That season will start on Aug. 30 when the Norse host Concord at Town & Country before they hit the road to play five of their next six games on the road.

The Norse will get plenty of challenges at home, however, with GLVC foes Wisconsin-Parkside, Bellarmine, Missouri-St. Louis, Quincy, Rockhurst, Saint Joseph’s and conference newcomer Maryville on the slate.

And despite the positive results last season, Sheehan has no intention of taking the opposition lightly.

“Every match is a real challenge, so we’re just going to have to work hard and be ready to play,” he said. Ashley Warndorf
