• St Michael’s Hospice needs £10,000 a day to continue in operation – and I am sure we are all aware of how much we need this wonderful, local, health care facility. We are to take part in the Hospice’s ‘Moonlight & Memories’ sponsored £10k walk on the evening/night of Saturday 18 September, and we invite all our parishioner friends to join us by donating to the cause – forms may be found at the rear of our churches (Gift Aid if possible) or donations may be handed to any of us. John is walking in memory of his wife, Margaret, Vicky too in her mum’s memory and to support her Dad on the way, and Ingrid will be remembering her sister, Anna. John Reid, Vicky Chainey & Ingrid Finch

• SVP Battle: As the local SVP is not currently running at full capacity, they have generously donated a very large amount of brand-new clothing that was gifted to them, to St Michael’s Hospice. Because they currently do not have the manpower to sell or donate these clothes themselves, they decided our local hospice was a very worthy and valuable recipient, as their own fundraising has been greatly impacted during the pandemic.

Saints of the Week Memorial of St , & , – 30th August This day commemorates the three canonised female martrys of the English Reformation: St Margaret Clitherow (1556-1586), a native of and convert to Catholism, who sheltered priests and was pressed to death in her home town on 25th March 1586; St Anne Line (1567- 1601) from Dunmow, Essex who also harboured priests and was hanged at Tyburn on 27th February 1601; St Margaret Ward (+1588), born in Congleton, Cheshire, who worked in London and attempted to help a priest escape from prison. She was hanged at Tyburn on 30th August 1588. All three were canonised in 1970 amongst the Forty Martyrs of and Wales.

Memorial of St Aidan, Bishop, Missionary & of Lindisfarne – 31st August St Aidan or Aedan (+651) was an Irish monk who joined the community at Iona and was sent to preach the Gospel in Northumbria. He was consecrated bishop and settled on the island of Lindisfarne, with the support of King St Oswald and his successor St Oswin. After St Aidan’s death in 651, the ‘Holy Island’ of Lindisfarne continued to produce many saints instrumental in the evangelisation of northern England, until the monastery was devasted by Vikings. These saints include the bishops St Fina, St Colman, St Eata, St Eadfrith, and, of course, St Cuthbert (4th September).

Feast of St Gregory the Great, Pope, Doctor, Feast – 3rd September St Gregory the Great (540-604) belonged to a Roman patrician family and served as a magistrate before embracing the monastic life. He acted as papal legate at Constantinople and was elected Pope in 590. He tightened church discipline and liturgical practice, reorganised the lands belonging to the Holy See and sent St Augustine to convert the Kingdom of Kent. He is consequently called the ‘Apostle of the English’ and, thanks to his theological and pastoral writings, is a Doctor of the Church.

Memorial of St Cuthbert, Bishop – 4th September St Cuthbert (c.634-687) worked as a shepherd in Northumbria until he joined the monastic community at Melrose under St Eata. He moved to Lindisfarne and did much to spread the Gospel in the area, before embracing the eremitical life on the isle of Farne. In 684 he became Bishop of Hexham, but quickly exchanged Sees with St Eata, who was by now Bishop of Lindisfarne. He was known for the holiness of his life and his many miracles. Buried orginally at Lindisfarne, his body was later translated to Durham and found to be incorrupt.

• The office remains open on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am – 12.30pm.

• The Parish Pastoral Team send all parishioners their prayers and good wishes.

Vatican News

Juba (Agenzia Fides) - "Our sisters were killed cold bloodedly", says Sister Christine John Amaa, of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, providing details of the murder of Sister Mary Daniel Abut, and Sister Regina Roba victims of an ambush along the Juba-Nimule highway on August 16. According to reports, the two nuns were part of a group of nine sisters when gunmen attacked their bus. "Our former Superior General, Sr. Mary Daniel Abut, who served the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus from 2006 to 2018, and Sr. Regina Roba were killed cold bloodedly on their way back to Juba after the celebrations of the centenary of the parish of the Assumption of Our Lady", says Sister Amaa. Following the ambush of unknown armed men, says Sister Amaa, the nine nuns "tried to escape and hid in the surrounding bushes". The criminals managed to find the two nuns and killed them cold bloodedly. The Archdiocese of Juba has announced five days of mourning to commemorate the two nuns. "On behalf of the Administration of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba, I wish to inform the public that all Catholic ecclesial institutions (universities, seminaries, colleagues, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba will be closed for four days to commemorate the late Sister Mary and Sister Regina from today August 17 until August 20 and work will resume on August 23", reads a statement from Fr. Samuel Abe, Secretary General of the Archdiocese of Juba. Sister Mary Daniel was the headmistress of the Usra Tuna School in Juba, while Sister Regina was a tutor and administrator at the Catholic Health Training Institute (CHTI) in the Catholic diocese of Wau. The requiem mass and burial will take place on August 20 at the parish of the Cathedral of St Theresa-Kator. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 18/8/2021)
