It was like something you might read about in the Onion: "PowerPoint Presentation Saved by Shower Curtain." Two editors of the satirical news outlet came to town to publicize a new book. They planned a slide show at the Rockit Room nightclub in the Richmond District, but someone forgot to bring a screen. A last-minute run to Walgreen's yielded the curtain, which proved an acceptable backdrop. Crisis averted. The incident spoke to the Onion's place in the fake-news world dominated by Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report." The Onion may be growing fast - the polished, exquisitely deadpan is a recent addition to Theonion.com, now headquartered in Manhattan, no longer Madison, Wis. - but it hasn't shed its humble, do-it-yourself identity. Will that change now that the Onion has conquered the globe? The Onion's latest book, the one displayed on the shower curtain, is as ambitious, if not more so, than anything it has ever published. It's "Our Dumb World," a handsome hardbound tome that is the Onion's first atlas - well, make that its 73rd edition. Need proof? It's right there, on a yellowing, highly inaccurate map reprinted inside. Dated 1621, it has the title "Il Nostro Mondo Stupido." One need not be a map lover or history buff to choke with laughter when poring over "Our Dumb World" (Little, Brown and Co., $27.99). "Now with 30% more Asia," as it advertises itself, the book, like the Onion's weekly newspaper, is a trove of hilarious nuggets. There are "fact" tables, pie charts, photos and captions and, of course, priceless headlines - or the atlas equivalent thereof. A sampling of the headers that accompany entries: "Germany: Genocide-Free Since April 11, 1946"; "Wales: Land of Consonant Sorrow"; "The United States: The Land of Opportunism." Joe Randazzo and Megan Ganz, the two Onion editors who came to San Francisco to "report on their findings," as they put it, estimate that there are 40,000 to 50,000 jokes in the book, all written by a dozen people. It was a two-year project that was as taxing as it sounds (when was the last time you tried to make up thousands of jokes?). As Randazzo described the creative process in an interview, "We would brainstorm with what we knew about each country - which was nothing." Then again, Ganz added, to do the research for the atlas, "we didn't travel much. I wouldn't exactly call Wikipedia traveling." Understandably, many Onion readers are curious to know what the people who work there, toiling away in anonymity, are like. Randazzo is a 29-year-old native of Penacook, N.H., who studied broadcast journalism at Emerson College in Boston. He wears glasses, has a soul patch and showed up to the San Francisco event in a pinstripe suit, tie and sneakers. In person, he's a bit reserved and doesn't crack wise at every possible opportunity, as one might assume of an Onion employee. Ganz, who is from Kalamazoo, Mich., is all of 23. She says the Onion is her first "real job," but she had good experience working at a satirical paper at the University of Michigan. "It was essentially a rip-off of the Onion," she said. Ganz is chipper and outgoing, pointing out, with a laugh, that she was happy she wore high heels to the nightclub because she could tower over Randazzo. Back to the atlas: Every country in the world is included in it, down to tiny South Pacific islands. Even the North and South Poles make it in. The U.S. section is broken down by regions, with state-by-state write-ups. In Northern California there are the "Hippie Reserve" and the "Endangered Black Panther Habitat." A historical note from 1967 states that "the 'Summer of Love' is followed by the 'Autumn of Chlamydia.' " California high school principal escorted off campus after graduation speech One-bedroom at the corner of Haight and Ashbury: Guess the rent in San Francisco A viral TikTok video brought chaos to Huntington Beach. San Francisco merits its own description: The city is "the alternative-lifestyle capital of the country, with thousands of young men living openly off trust-fund money wherever you look." Some of the jokes in the atlas are lazy (e.g., a "tapas beach" in Spain), and others will no doubt offend. At the nightclub, many in the crowd groaned when maps of Africa were shown, much of the bleak, unflinching humor dealing with poverty and famine. One person wrote the Onion to ask the staff to remove a reference in the India section to the "god of tech support." Ganz wasn't exactly swayed. "We offended a god that doesn't exist," she said. In anticipation of possible protests (of course, a little free press also wouldn't hurt), the Onion sent a copy of "Our Dumb World" to every U.S. senator (the letter begins "Esteemed senators, and Joe Lieberman"). Attached to the letter was a resolution allowing the senators to condemn the Onion for its characterization of the senators' home turf. No word back yet. One fan of the Onion who came from Sausalito to see its editors in person wasn't about to condemn them. "I've read this thing cover to cover, and it just makes me laugh," Joe Tate, 67, said, clutching a well-worn copy of an earlier Onion book, "." "You see the real news repeated so many times," he added, "so you need a little relief." Albania: Funland Goat-Cart Track. Belgium: Site of violent 1974 Oompa Loompa riots. Our Dumb World: The Onion's Atlas of The Planet Earth 73rd Edition by The Onion. Our Dumb World: The Onion's Atlas of The Planet Earth, 73rd Edition features incorrect statistics on all of the Earth's 168, 182, or 196 independent nations. It also features maps, including a fold-out world map at actual size. Readers will learn about every country from Afghanistan, "Allah's Cat Box," to the Ukraine, "The Bridebasket of Europe." Today's news-parody consumer cannot possibly understand made-up current events without the context of fake world history and geography. That is why The Onion is publishing a world atlas: to help us. Our Dumb World is an invaluable tool for any reader interested in overthrowing a weakened government in East Asia, exploiting a developing nation in Africa, or for directions to tonight's party at Erica's. It is a reference guide to 250,000 of the world's most important places, such as North Korea's Trench of Victory, the Great Human Pyramid of Egypt, and Saudi Arabia's superhighway, the Mohammedobahn.
