Dan Harmon and the #Metoo Apology
Journal of Contemporary Rhetoric, Vol. 9, No.3/4, 2019, pp. 112-125. “Redemption Follows Allocution”: Dan Harmon and the #MeToo Apology Ben Wetherbee This article analyzes comedian and TV writer Dan Harmon’s famously well-received #MeToo-era apology for sexual misconduct on the set of his sitcom Community, noting how Harmon revises the traditionally individualistic genre of the apology into a statement of advocacy for the collective moral imperative of the #MeToo movement. After discussing #MeToo as a rhetorical situation that justifiably trivializes pleas for individual forgiveness, the article analyzes Har- mon’s monologue in relation to scholarship on genre of apologia, contrasting Harmon’s with the comparatively indi- vidualistic and unsuccessful apology of Louis C.K and arguing that traditional apologies prove ill-suited to the #Me- Too era. I contend, finally, that male speakers seeking redemption for sexual misconduct should heed Harmon’s ex- ample of sustained critical self-reflection, pronounced advocacy for victims, and sustained cultivation of an ethos that merits redemption. Keywords: #MeToo, apology, apologia, allocution, Dan Harmon, rhetorical situation, differentiation, transcendence, characterological coherence The #MeToo movement hit peak momentum in late 2017, a year that saw sexual assault allegations mount against figures like Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K., Matt Lauer, Garrison Keillor, Charlie Rose, Kevin Spacey, and a long list of other male celebrities—all of which, let us recall, succeeded the inauguration of a president who had nonchalantly boasted about grabbing women’s genitals before garnering 306 electoral votes.1 The comedian and writer Dan Harmon fittingly dubbed 2017 “the Year of the Asshole.” Taking to Twitter on New Year’s Eve of that year, the creator and former showrunner of NBC’s sitcom Community and co-creator of the Adult Swim animated series Rick and Morty offered this bit of self-deprecating, understated humor: “This was truly the Year of the Asshole. -
U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration REGISTER
U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration REGISTER A Daily Summary of Motor Carrier Applications and of Decisions and Notices Issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration DECISIONS AND NOTICES RELEASED January 24, 2020 -- 10:30 AM NOTICE Please note the timeframe required to revoke a motor carrier's operating authority for failing to have sufficient levels of insurance on file is a 33 day process. The process will only allow a carrier to hold operating authority without insurance reflected on our Licensing and Insurance database for up to three (3) days. Revocation decisions will be tied to our enforcement program which will focus on the operations of uninsured carriers. This process will further ensure that the public is adequately protected in case of a motor carrier crash. Accordingly, we are adopting the following procedure for revocation of authority; 1) The first notice will go out three (3) days after FMCSA receives notification from the insurance company that the carrier's policy will be cancelled in 30 days. This notification informs the carrier that it must provide evidence that it is in full compliance with FMCSA's insurance regulations within 30 days. 2) If the carrier has not complied with FMCSA's insurance requirements after 30 days, a final decision revoking the operating authority will be issued. Turn on with Rush
WITH TURN ON WITH ==RUSH== N[)( I1.oChOI Young AdulTN _OIio Rush Profile Invisible Airwaves Crackle with life Bright antennae bristle With the enerqy Emotional feedback On a timeless wavelength Bearing a gift beyond price .•. (~Spirit of Radio· from Permanent Waves) In 1974, there was an album called Rush, and a fresh, youthful threesome from Canada pounding out heavy rock rhythms. Six years and another six discs later, the airwaves are crackling and bristling all over the country with the sound of Permanent Waves, Rush'a latest album. As of ~rch 1st, weeks after its release, it is Number Five on the charts, and the single, ~Spirit of Radio· is making its own waves. The first taste of what was to come occurred shortly before the release of Rush ' s second album in 1974, Fly By Night, when drummer John Rutsey left the group and Neil Peart arrived. With the full consent of founding members Alex Lifeson (guitar) and Geddy Lee (bass, vocals), Peart soon became chief lyricist, and the music be- gan t<) take on a less straight-forward, more mystical form. That year, the band received a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) as The Most Promising New Group of the Year. A third platter, Caress of Steel, saw this development taking further shape, with a whole side being -,- devoted to the t ~le of the quest for the "Fountain of Lamneth." But it wasn't until their fourth album in '76 that Rush r eally de fined their role as storytellers of sci-fi. Entitl ed 2112, an entire side of the album was once again taken up with the musical relating of an epic tale. -
