Angel Balevski” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The development of means for stopping vehicles and vessels that pose a potential threat of criminal and terrorist activity is one of the priorities in the non-lethal technologies research today. This paper summarizes and discusses the results of a study on the current state and prospects of technologies and systems for forced stopping different types of vehicles and vessels. If technology is not the only driver in the evolution of warfare, it is the enabler, not to say the trigger, of most of the changes that occurred at the turning point between generations. For a country like Switzerland, Technology Foresight is paramount to identify the opportuni- ties and threats a technology can represent for the different military capabilities building our national armed forces. Rather than picking winners, the Technology Foresight program must provide a comprehensive overview to ensure an early warning about novel relevant technological advances. Identifying potentialities provides the time to build the necessary competences, skills and expertise, in the various fields. In that sense, Technology Foresight must be an integrated element of the doctrine, planing and procurement processes of the armed forces. Only with this strategic futuristic vision, the Swiss armed forces are able to handle, economi- cally and operatively, the evolutions and challenges to come. -

Examples are computerized conveyors, and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) in which computers direct automatic loaders to pick and place items. Automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems use embedded floor wires to direct driverless vehicles to various locations in the plant. Benefits of AMH systems include quicker material movement, lower inventories and storage space, reduced product damage and higher labour productivity. Objectives After studying this unit, you should be able to understand the importance of AGV in a computer-integrated manufacturing system, role of industrial robots in a computer-integrated manufacturing systems, and alternative for automated material handling system. 3.2 INTRODUCTION TO AGVS A material-handling system can be simply defined as an integrated system involving such activities as handling, and controlling of materials. -

Identifying and Countering FAKE NEWS Mark Verstraete1, Derek E. Bambauer2, & Jane R. Bambauer3 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Fake news has become a controversial, highly contested issue recently. But in the public discourse, “fake news” is often used to refer to several different phenomena. The lack of clarity around what exactly fake news is makes understanding the social harms that it creates and crafting solutions to these harms difficult. This report adds clarity to these discussions by identifying several distinct types of fake news: hoax, propaganda, trolling, and satire. In classifying these different types of fake news, it identifies distinct features of each type of fake news that can be targeted by regulation to shift their production and dissemination. This report introduces a visual matrix to organize different types of fake news and show the ways in which they are related and distinct. The two defining features of different types of fake news are 1) whether the author intends to deceive readers and 2) whether the motivation for creating fake news is financial. These distinctions are a useful first step towards crafting solutions that can target the pernicious forms of fake news (hoaxes and propaganda) without chilling the production of socially valuable satire. The report emphasizes that rigid distinctions between types of fake news may be unworkable. Many authors produce fake news stories while holding different intentions and motivations simultaneously. This creates definitional grey areas. For instance, a fake news author can create a story as a response to both financial and political motives.
