2 Golden Gate ASHRAE Fog Dispenser october 2013 golden gate chapter President’s Message, october 2013

Hello Golden Gate ASHRAE Members! This is my very first President’s message, and you cannot see it but I am a bit nervous writing this! Welcome to our first Fog Dispenser for 2013-2014. Your Board members have been busy over the summer even if no chapter meetings have taken place. The Chapter Regional Conference took place in August in Las Vegas and motions, nomi- nations and training were voted and carried out. If you want to know more about what happened, please ask one of us who attended: Annie Foster, Tyler Bradshaw, Tim Goeppner, Nikola Kravik, Christopher Daniel and myself. Your chapter also won lots of awards: • 1st place for best website – thanks again to Annie for spear-heading and making this so successful • 2nd place for best newsletter • Best membership chair for Erica Stewart – she leaves a strong legacy and will be a great support to Nikola who is stepping into this role • Best YEA section (hooray to Michelle Dionello who is also our new Board member this year) • And several first place CTTC awards – these projects are now going to compete for Society Technology awards.

A new program was also created called “LeaDRS”, where a member of YEA will shadow the Director of Region X at the next Society meeting. We are looking forward for applications from our YEA members –they are due soon so don’t delay! Finally, Annie has crafted a very interesting program for the coming year. Our first Chapter meeting will be at Scott’s Seafood on Thursday October 10. There will be a Tech session by Max Sherman entitled “Dr. Duct Tape” and the main program about “Ten things you might not know about ASHRAE – it’s more than just handbooks and dinner meetings!” We will have a great panel of people involved at different levels and in different positions in the ASHRAE organization, so you can find more ways to benefit from your membership. We will also host a joint event with the San Jose Chapter on Saturday October 12 – a Clayshoot! So come and join us and have some fun! More info in this newsletter. And to wrap up a very busy October, on Wednesday 16 October your Chapter is supporting a free seminar on “Radiant Systems: HVAC Design, Energy Assessment and Architectural Implications” taking place at the PEC in San Francisco (more details in the Fog or on our website). I am looking forward to seeing you all during this great new year!

“ASHRAE Golden Gate’s Chapter Meetings Start Again!”…..... Tom Gilbertson, Chapter Historian …as they have every year since beginning in 1937….when Baldwin Woods, a Professor at UC-Berkeley was the president of our predecessor society’s chapter….The American Society of Heating and Ventilat- ing Engineers…..we were ASHVE then…not ASHRAE)….and how things have changed… since 1937! Ah….a simpler time…perhaps……and just look at the name……”Heating and Ven- tilating Engineers”…no…..“Refrigeration”… and consequently….no “Air-conditioning”…. and we might even add… “no money”…. yes…1937 was a pretty simple time! Our chapter members though could have been rooting for that San Francisco-kid who was the star of the Yankees…who by the way defeated the New York Giants in the 1937 …. “Jolting Joe DiMaggio”….sounds just a little bit familiar doesn’t it? Our 1937 - “ASHVE”-industry was a pretty sleepy business….consider what was being built at that time….basically very little….a few churches, a very few schools, a very few hospitals…and virtually no office buildings….The depression was in full swing….the economy…..having pretty much “bottomed” in 1933…only to see a “slight rise in activity”….and then to see the economy start to falter again in 1939….In my home town…where the economy slowed to a “stop” around 1924….NO building was even started between 1924 and 1937…until the school I attended was built in 1937…. In our Golden Gate Chapter’s first year there was no Federal minimum-wage….that did not come until 1938 when it was established as a 44-hour work-week and $0.25 per hour…for a weekly wage of $11.00….No wonder there was little concern about….. “air-conditioning”……no one could afford it! So where are we today?....76 years later…..we have a new bridge…just like in 1937….and now as the ASHRAE-society we are obsessed, perhaps appropriately…about how little energy we can use in our all of our projects…..and our projects have gone from the “simple”….to the amazingly “complex”…..rather like life itself…in the past 76 years. And now we have many more “rules”….the codes…the standards…the permits…the regulations…that govern and “direct” our industry…..and ASHRAE-members are needed more than ever to come forward and participate and help guide our industry. ASHRAE-members need to step up, get involved, and volunteer their time…and contribute our industry’s knowledge to the activities that actually govern the area of our work. Who?...better than a knowledgeable ASHRAE-member really knows more about the industry that controls over 55% of all of the energy used in the United States?...I doubt that any group has the knowledge that ASHRAE and its members possess. Lets make this a year of “historical involvement”….where as ASHRAE Members we immerse ourselves in activities that help guide our Country!....and its energy use and policy. When our President, Isabelle Lavedrine calls upon you to serve our industry, lets give her the support that enables ASHRAE members to be effective in shaping our industry for the future!

6 Golden Gate ASHRAE Fog Dispenser october 2013 membership promotion How Has ASHRAE Membership Helped You?

As ASHRAE Golden Gate’s Membership Promotion Co-Chair, I was pleased to see several students at our monthly Golden Gate Chapter dinner gathering in the Bay Area. It is exciting to see student participation growing, and I wonder what will happen to most of them after graduation. The ASHRAE season ended in June, but I hope it was just the beginning of long engineering careers for the students. For these students, the event didn’t signify a free dinner or few seconds of fame when I embarrassed them by recognizing them in the audience. These events are about network- ing, keeping young professionals in the ASHRAE circle after graduation, and continuing the legacy of mentoring youngsters. Two of their moving personal statements are included below (Justin Libay & Hadi Yazdani). I was one of these young engineers in 2007 in Oakland, accidentally seated between two ASHRAE Fellows: Karl Jordan (76/77 Golden Gate President), and Richard A. Charles, (92/93 ASHRAE National President) at a chapter dinner at Scott’s restaurant. Meeting them had a profound effect on my career, and I want to build on the mentoring legacy that Mr. Charles started in 1969 when he joined ASHRAE. This message is dedicated to his memory. – Nikola Kravik, Project Engineer, Willdan Energy Solutions, Pleasanton, California (ASHRAE Golden Gate Membership Promotion Co-Chair, 2013-2014)

“Active ASHRAE participation is essential to the student engineer. Finding a job the old- fashioned way still works better than Monster, LinkedIn, or other systems. Meeting someone in person says much more than a resume, since a resume can’t show a potential employer how you communicate or interact with people from various backgrounds. ASHRAE Chapter meeting conversations make you more ‘real’ than a resume. More than putting a face to a name, it’s about making an impression. If you are funny, have a dog, work at Subway, like to windsurf, or go clay shooting, people remember these personal details. When I was searching for a job, nearly all my interview calls were either from people I met through ASHRAE or from someone associated with an ASHRAE connection who passed along my resume. By that method alone, I averaged one or two interviews a week. I started my new engineering job on July 10, 2013, and I do not even have a LinkedIn account.” – Justin Libay, Project Engineer, Willdan Energy Solutions, Pleasanton, California (ASHRAE San Jose Student Chapter President, 2012-2013)

I worked three years in the building automation and controls industry in Iran. Last year, I moved to the United States with the ambition of becoming a successful controls engineer, but there were many barriers to my progress. I didn’t know the local market or companies, I didn’t have a network, and I didn’t have a United States degree or work experience. To establish my network, I found the San Jose ASHRAE chapter and contacted the president. At that time, I didn’t anticipate finding a job soon, since I knew that I needed a strong network to find a job easily. I volunteered for ASHRAE, helping with meetings and events. When a position opened with the History Committee, I helped in that capacity for a few months. Then I decided to expand my network by participating in Golden Gate ASHRAE meetings and seminars, a great opportunity for me to network among the most professional engineers in the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning and energy industries. After only two meetings I had made significant connections, learned from technical seminars and presentations, met people with shared experiences, and obtained referrals to companies. There were other forms of support, too: meeting someone in my field over a cup of coffee reminded me of good days with my colleagues back home. My new friends helped me to submit my resume to their managers and colleagues, and finally I landed a job in line with my skills and interest. This would not have been possible without the help of such a well-organized professional group offering advice, recom- mendations and connections. Now I am San Jose’s Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC) Chair, and I intend to stay involved with ASHRAE throughout my career. I look forward to contributing to this organization and helping young engineers. – Hadi Yazdani, Building Automation Systems Engineer, Johnson Controls International, Freemont, California (ASHRAE San Jose Chapter CTTC 2013-2014)

8 Golden Gate ASHRAE Fog Dispenser october 2013 student activities Denver Meeting Student Report ASHRAE ANNUAL CONFERENCE, DENVER COLORADO July 8th, 2013 By Ethan Landy, Stanford University From June 22nd to 26th, thousands of professionals convened in Denver, Colorado to immerse themselves in the latest knowledge and advances in HVAC&R. Thanks to a travel grant from the Golden Gate Chapter of ASHRAE, I was fortunate to have been able to take part. As a first-time conference attendee, I was surprised by the overwhelming diversity and breadth of the conference program. It was often difficult to choose which session to attend! To get the most out of the rich technical program, I attended sessions on topics ranging from measurement and verification, to inte- grated project delivery and design. I found it particularly interesting to discover how engineers are increasingly leveraging strategies such as BIM The view from the Pepsi Center Media Box and IPD to achieve greater energy efficiency through collaborative design. In addition to the technical program, the conference offered a number of technical tours to local facilities of interest. As home of the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche and the Colorado Mammoth, the Pepsi Center is an incredibly versatile stadium. In the recent years, it has implemented a significant number of measures to reduce its energy consumption, such as new chiller plant, a flat-plate heat exchanger and a series of VFDs. On the technical tour, I learned all about this cutting-edge stadium, while catching a glimpse inside the mechanical rooms, locker In the fields behind the NREL Campus rooms, practice facilities, and the media box. Located in Golden, CO, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has led by example through the implementation of extensive energy-efficiency projects throughout their campus. Most notably, the Research Support Facility (RSF) demonstrates that a commercial office building is able to achieve an EUI of 36.4 kBtu/sf/yr and net-zero energy consumption through strate- gies such as goal-focused contracting, integrated design, and continued occupant engagement. The technical tour of NREL was, without a doubt, the highlight of the conference. It was exciting to experience the RSF in person after learning about it extensively in a number of university courses. On the closing day of the confer- ence, I attended the Standing Standard Project Committee discussing the Standard for the Design of High Per- formance Green Buildings. Throughout my studies, I have frequently referred to Transpired Solar Collectors and Shading Devices on ASHRAE Standards, and it was insightful the NREL RSF to see the detailed review and consider- ation involved in the development of such documents. I was impressed by the dedication of the many ASHRAE members who devote countless hours to the advancement of our profession, and to the protection of the public interest. In just four days, I was able to learn from leading researchers, network with profes- sionals from around the continent, and visit cutting-edge facilities. The Annual Conference allowed me to learn more about ASHRAE’s broader role in the profession, and the many opportunities for member involvement and enrichment. I look forward to attending future meetings and doing my part to further the advancement of our profession. I would like to express my deepest thanks to the Golden Gate Chapter of ASHRAE for Flat Plate Heat Exchanger at the Pepsi making this experience possible. Center

Background: The LeaDRS (Leadership Development through Regional Support) supports the development of future Regional leaders through their shadowing of current DRCs. As a premier member‐ society, ASHRAE has many aspects and leadership levels that are unknown to many members. It is rare for any member, especially YEA members to have a complete understand- ing of the inner workings of ASHRAE from the Executive and Board levels.

Objectives: LeaDRS hopes to develop the future leaders of the Regions by offering a developmental shadowing experience unobtainable by many ASHRAE members. The program is intended to build a one‐on‐one relationship between a DRC and an incoming or newly appointed Regional leader. LeaDRS is focused on targeting proven, dedicated ASHRAE leaders from the grassroots level to provide development, insight, and inspiration for that individual that they can take back to their Regions and Chapters. It is also designed to expose these young leaders to the Society and opportunities at the Society level.
