Flash floods Incident Report No. 02 Date of incident: 21 June 2012 Reporting date: 25 June 2012

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES • Floods hit six districts in Baghlan on 21 June. • ARCS committed to provide assistance to 29 affected families. • ANDMA and OCHA are coordinating the response in collaboration with humanitarian actors in the field.

II. Situation Overview

Following heavy rainfall on 21 June, flash floods hit Baghlan’s six districts of Baghlani Jadid, Khost Wa Firing, Dih Salah, , Khinjan and Tala Wa Barfak. ANDMA reported that one person was killed and more than 60 houses were either destroyed or damaged as a result of the flash floods.

On 22, 23 and 24 June 2012 IOM, ARCS, ACTD and WFP’s partner conducted assessments in Bano area of Andarab and Dih Salah districts. There was no house damaged or destroyed in Dih Salah district however 21 houses were destroyed in Laghak village and one person was killed in Faj village, Bano area, , Baghlan province. The assessment also reported that four kilometers of the road was damaged and one culvert was destroyed which affected access for the local community to the district centre. In addition 46 orchards 7 water intakes and 14.2 hectares of agricultural land was damaged which have direct impact on the local community’s economic and livelihood sources, thereby increasing vulnerability.

On 22 and 23 June 2012 FOCUS, ANDMA and WFP’s partner conducted assessments in . There were no houses that were either damaged or destroyed. The assessment highlighted that 10 water intakes were damaged and 45.2 hectares of agricultural land was washed away, affecting the socio- economic sources for the local community.

Assessments are going on in Khinjan and Baghlani Jadid districts. The Provincial Governor called an emergency PDMC meeting to strategize for response. ARCS committed to provide Food, NFI, Kitchen Kit, Emergency Shelter (Tent) and Hygiene kits to 29 families.

III. Humanitarian Needs and Response Needs: Emergency Shelter (Tents), Food, NFI and Hygiene kits. Response: ARCS committed to provide the required humanitarian needs. Gaps & Constraints: No gap available at the moment. IV. Coordination ANDMA and OCHA are coordinating the assessments and responses in collaboration with humanitarian partners. V.
