Personal Nutrition Philosophy: I adhere to a holistic approach to nutrition that centres around applying behaviour change principles in an individual setting or a systems approach to change more broadly. My personal priority focus is on promoting a planetary health approach to dietetics in which our nutrition recommendations are considered in the context of broader impacts, including environmental impacts. My core focus in practice now has for the most part shifted from sports nutrition to these areas of practice.

Also, the food industry is not evil. The most science-minded, nutrition focused people I’ve met work for major food brands and commodity groups. It’s because of the food industry that so much nutrition science can be done, and so much can be learned.

Personal Nutrition Philosophy: Nutritionists, researchers, and public health professionals offer a unique vantage point from which to share accurate, evidence-based and culturally relevant nutrition information for the promotion of true health and wellness. It is up to us, as professionals, to disseminate information in everyday language for everyday life.

I help individuals cultivate health and wellness through a non-diet, weight-inclusive, culturally-relevant approach. Given my vantage point as a university lecturer, course creator, dietitian, writer and mother of two living abroad, I offer a unique perspective on nutrition, health, dietary patterns, and eating behaviors. As a lover of travel, I find joy in learning from new experiences, different cultures, and traditional foods which promote health and longevity. Living in Barcelona, Spain, for nine years now, has taught me that food is more than the sum of its parts, and that tradition and culture—instead of dieting and pop culture—can serve as the model for a pathway to health. Personal Nutrition Philosophy:

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

Benjamin Franklin

Experience is the best teacher. Knowledge alone is not enough to encourage people to engage in effective self-care. We must focus on find ways to develop the skills to ‘sell’ our messages by tailoring them to suit the individual. To do so, we must be open to new information evidence-based and must know how to apply the information effectively.
