2015 Event Information 2015 Event Information Event Partners www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com January 2015 Dear Coach, We are excited to welcome you as we celebrate our twelfth year of the Mohegan Sun World Baseball Coaches’ Convention. Beginning with the first clinic in 2004, we have sought to provide you with the very best in coaching education. We want this clinic to be something special and we have spent considerable time securing the best clinicians and designing a curriculum that addresses all levels of play and a range of coaching areas. Each year, we seek to improve your clinic experience and this year we've made two major improvements: we've redesigned the event layout to improve traffic flow and we are introducing an event App for your smartphone or tablet to put critical clinic information at your fingertips. We believe our clinic is more than just three days of coaching instruction; it is a chance to exchange ideas and learn from each other. Our convention staff, exhibitors and guest speakers will be available to you throughout the clinic. Please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself, ask a question or provide your own perspective on the game. A special thanks goes to the staff and management of the Mohegan Sun - our title sponsor - who have welcomed us and allowed us to use their outstanding facilities and amenities. We also thank our other sponsors for their important support, including: Extra Innings, Rawlings, On Deck Sports, Hitting Guru 3D, Baseball Heaven, Louisville Slugger, Baseball America, Club Diamond Nation, Lux Bond & Green, Jaypro Sports, The Coaches Insider and Geno’s Fastbreak Restaurant. We have a terrific group of exhibitors this year and we encourage you to visit them in the Mohegan Sun Convention Center during the event. Enjoy the clinic and please take the time during and after this weekend to let us know your thoughts on improving next year’s Mohegan Sun World Baseball Coaches’ Convention. We wish you all the best with your upcoming season and look forward to seeing you in January 2016! Yours in baseball and coaching, P.S.: Become a World Baseball Facebook fan and get clinic updates throughout the year. www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com WORLD BASEBALL EVENT SCHEDULE Thursday, January 15, 2015: Session Times Room 2015 Speaker 2015 Topic GENERAL EVENT REGISTRATION 4:30 pm - 9:00 pm Convention Center Pre-Function Area 6:15 pm - 7:00 pm Break-Out #1 Steve Trimper Batting Practices that Deliver Game Results Building a Successful Program -- High School, AAU, Legion & Break-Out #2 Phil Orbe Summer League Defending the Backstop: Break-Out #3 Nick Derba A How-To on Catching Extra Innings Kyle Shiplett MIZUNO PRODUCT DEMO Batting Cage 7:15 pm - 8:00 pm Break-Out #1 Nick Ahmed and Chris Podeswa Techniques and Drills to Make Every Infield Play Look Routine Break-Out #2 Justin Blood Pitcher U! Ingalls Foundation Martha Holden Jennings Foundation Ohio Arts Council Rakuten OverDrive Tom Piraino and Barbara McWilliams Third Federal Foundation LONG TIME COMING: A 1955 BASEBALL STORY USA, 2017, 87 minutes Jon Strong, Director SYNOPSIS In 1955 the southern United States was divided by segregation and brimming with hatred and prejudice. Enter the Pensacola Jaycees All-Stars, the first African-American little league team in Florida. White parents didn’t want their kids playing against black kids, and they complained to league leaders. However, the league ruled in favor of the Jaycees: white teams either played them or forfeited. And forfeit is exactly what they did—every team, every game. So, by default, the Jaycees became district champions and headed to Orlando for the state tournament. Once again they met resistance. Despite approving players and parents, the coach for the opposing Orlando Kiwanis wouldn’t play the Jaycees and quit. Luckily, the assistant coach stepped up and made history. More than 60 years later, they’re reunited in LONG TIME COMING: A 1955 BASEBALL STORY—a compelling documentary highlighting the cultural significance of their matchup. Through gripping interviews, the film also reveals their varying perspectives on the racial turmoil of then and now. Featuring appearances from baseball greats including Hank Aaron and Gary Sheffield, this impactful film is a sobering testament to how far we’ve come in America, but how far we still have to go.

Contact: Abrielle Swisher Gordon C. James Public Relations Office: (602) 274-1988 Cell: (602) 370-5557 MLB Players Partner with Fans to Strike Out Poverty Across Globe Nine Players Combine Efforts to Bring Drinking Water and Crisis Relief to Hardest Places PHOENIX, AZ (March 28, 2019) – For many across the world, access to some of life’s most basic needs, like clean water and a nutritious meal, can be near impossible to come by. With that in mind, Major League Baseball (MLB) players have teamed up with Food for the Hungry (FH), a global humanitarian organization serving the vulnerable in over 20 countries, to raise money through the Striking Out Poverty campaign, in an effort to meet the most urgent needs in some of the poorest communities in the world. As the 2019 MLB season kicks off, nine players from four different MLB teams have committed to a variety of Striking Out Poverty projects and encourage fans to support them throughout the season to raise the necessary funds to meet their goals. These projects range from providing medical care to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, building school classrooms and providing clean water in Rwanda, providing emergency response to the current crisis in Venezuela and building baseball fields and implementing additional water filtration systems in the Dominican Republic. “Opening day doesn’t just mark the first day of the baseball season—it also marks the beginning of new hope for so many underserved communities,” says Milam Byers, Director of Sports Partnerships at Food for the Hungry. “We are excited to embark on our third year of changing lives, providing resources and looking past the scoreboard with the help of these players and their fans.” Baseball fans can support these projects and their favorite players by visiting www.pledgeit.org/team/sop-2019 or www.bigleagueimpact.org and clicking on the player’s picture to pledge for home runs, base steals, and learn more.

NAME OF THE GAME: DO STATISTICS CONFIRM THE LABELS OF PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL ERAS? by Mitchell T. Woltring A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Leisure and Sport Management Middle Tennessee State University May 2013 Thesis Committee: Dr. Colby Jubenville Dr. Steven Estes ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would not be where I am if not for support I have received from many important people. First and foremost, I would like thank my wife, Sarah Woltring, for believing in me and supporting me in an incalculable manner. I would like to thank my parents, Tom and Julie Woltring, for always supporting and encouraging me to make myself a better person. I would be remiss to not personally thank Dr. Colby Jubenville and the entire Department at Middle Tennessee State University. Without Dr. Jubenville convincing me that MTSU was the place where I needed to come in order to thrive, I would not be in the position I am now. Furthermore, thank you to Dr. Elroy Sullivan for helping me run and understand the statistical analyses. Without your help I would not have been able to undertake the study at hand. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to all my family and friends, which are far too many to name. You have all helped shape me into the person I am and have played an integral role in my life. ii ABSTRACT A game defined and measured by hitting and pitching performances, baseball exists as the most statistical of all sports (Albert, 2003, p.
