In total, the new player development system includes 179 teams across 17 leagues in 43 states and four provinces. During these challenging times, it’s an honor to know we have your continued support and encouragement. While 2020 has thrown us quite the curve ball, we have adjusted and pivoted to continue our investments in and support of the New England community. More specifically, we are proud to have augmented our RBI & Red Sox Scholars programs with innovative virtual content and curriculum that ensured consistent support of our young participants. This was only possible through your generosity. Thank you! We have made every effort to continue our traditional events that fuel our ability to provide programming and grants to the community. While we would have preferred to celebrate in person, we are thrilled to announce this years’ class of Hall of Fame members as David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Rich Gedman, Bill Dinneen and Dan Duquette. We are also excited to award both Phill & Liz Gross and The Boston Beer Company with the Fenway Honors distinction for their ongoing commitment to the community through philanthropic initiatives, gifts and programming. What an amazing and accomplished list of recipients and inductees! While this Hall of Fame and Fenway Honors event salutes the personal success, commitment, and passion of our award winners, it is also an opportunity to recognize the impact of the Red Sox Foundation.

AMERICAN BASEBALL IMPERIALISM, CLASHING NATIONAL CULTURES, AND THE FUTURE OF SAMURAI BESUBORU PETER C. BJARKMAN El béisbol is the Monroe Doctrine turned into a lineup card, a remembrance of past invasions. – John Krich from El Béisbol: Travels Through the Pan-American Pastime (1989) When baseball (the spectacle) is seen restrictively as American baseball, and then when American baseball is seen narrowly as Major League Baseball (MLB), two disparate views will tend to appear. In one case, fans happily accept league expansion, soaring attendance figures, even exciting home run races as evidence that all is well in this best of all possible baseball worlds. In the other case, the same evidence can be seen as mirroring the desperate last flailing of a dying institution – or at least one on the edge of losing any recognizable character as the great American national pastime. Big league baseball’s modern-era television spectacle – featuring overpaid celebrity athletes, rock-concert stadium atmosphere, and the recent plague of steroid abuse – has labored at attracting a new free-spending generation of fans enticed more by notoriety than aesthetics, and consequently it has also succeeded in driving out older generations of devotees once attracted by the sport’s unique pastoral simplicities. Anyone assessing the business health and pop-culture status of the North American version of professional baseball must pay careful attention to the fact that better than forty percent of today’s big league rosters are now filled with athletes who claim their birthright as well as their baseball training or heritage outside of the United States.

Well, it could be Fernando Tatis Jr., that is if San Diego pulls off a rumored trade with Seattle, which would net the Padres shortstop Jean Segura and starting pitcher Mike Leake for Wil Myers (and, you’d assume, more). If the Padres don’t complete a trade for an impact player at short, however, Tatis would remain at his home position and third would forge on as a black hole. Where else could the Padres turn for an answer? With Christian Villanueva sold to the Yomiuri Giants and ties cut with Cory Spangenberg, the in-house options are dwindling. Myers, who experimented at third late last season, is more likely to move back to the outfield if he sticks around. The recently acquired Greg Garcia or minor leaguer Ty France could fill in, but neither represent anything close to a permanent solution at the hot corner.

Fair Abstract Age effects in baseball are estimated in this paper using a nonlinear fixed-effects regression. The sample consists of all players who have played 10 or more "full-time" years in the major leagues between 1921 and 2004. Quadratic improvement is assumed up to a peak-performance age, which is estimated, and then quadratic decline after that, where the two quadratics need not be the same. Each player has his own constant term. The results show that aging effects are larger for pitchers than for batters and larger for baseball than for track and field, running, and swimming events and for chess. There is some evidence that decline rates in baseball have decreased slightly in the more recent period, but they are still generally larger than those for the other events. There are 18 batters out of the sample of 441 whose performances in the second half of their careers noticeably exceed what the model predicts they should have been. All but 3 of these players played from 1990 on.
