January 2020

Dear ,

Welcome to the 17th annual Mohegan Sun World Coaches’ Convention held in the Mohegan Sun's newest venue, the Expo Center! We are excited to have you here. Our mission is to provide you with the very best in coaching education; and again, this year, we have secured the best clinicians and designed a curriculum that addresses all levels of play and a range of coaching areas.

Here are a couple of convention notes for 2020:

- We are excited to return to Mohegan Sun’s state of the art Expo Center, where we've added additional interactive learning sessions on our Demo Infield and the On Deck Sports Batting Cage in the Exhibitor Zone. We’ve also added a new venue in the Exhibitor Zone, The Bullpen, where attendees can meet and discuss baseball with select presenters following their sessions.

- Again this year, we will offer you post-event access to video of our Thursday and Friday convention sessions (more than 30 sessions!), so that you can refresh your memory or watch sessions you may have missed. Following the clinic, we will provide attendees with a special promo code, which will enable you to purchase all sessions at a greatly discounted rate.

- To provide you with the latest event information, we offer an event app that features the convention schedule, a list of exhibitors, a digital version of the event handout and much more. Search Baseball Coaches Convention in the app stores. If you'd like to receive real-time event updates and news, please allow us to push event notifications to your device of choice.

- We will offer a Talking Baseball Panel Discussion on Friday evening from 5:45PM – 6:45PM in Break-Out 1. Our panelists will discuss the game today, provide insights into what and who motivated them, and finish by taking questions from the audience. It should be a terrific final session of the day.

Our convention is more than just three days of coaching instruction; it is a chance to bounce ideas off your fellow coaches and learn from each other. Our staff, exhibitors and guest speakers will be available to you throughout the convention. Please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself, ask a question or provide your own perspective on the game.

We thank all of our excellent presenters, who have found the time to share their knowledge of and passion for America's game. A special thanks to our title sponsor, Mohegan Sun; and to all of our sponsors and exhibitors, whose support helps make this event possible.

We hope you enjoy this year’s Mohegan Sun World Baseball Coaches’ Convention.

Yours in baseball and coaching,

SESSION: Thursday, January 9, 2020, 8:15PM – 9:00PM: Infield Demo Area TOPIC: Position Player Throwing Program for the Northeast Arm PRESENTER: Marc DelPiano, Professional Scout,

THROWING PROGRAM

The primary goals of the Throwing Program routine are to establish a solid base of structure and purpose to each throw. This is NOT a pitching exercise but that of fundamental movements in which to throw a baseball to develop muscle memory and strengthen as well as loosen the whole body. Please make sure you use extreme focus and concentration during the program. It is designed to improve arm strength, improve accuracy and to maintain arm health. Below are some key points to make yourself aware of before, during and after the throwing program.

1.) Active Warm-Up- Make sure that you get a solid stretch, break a sweat and get some good blood flow as you first throw is like starting a car with metal on metal.

2.) Begin at 60 feet or slightly less depending on early tolerance. a. Four seam grip, holding ball like an egg, no choking the ball allowing for maximum looseness. b. With lower half in line toe to toe in the stepping to target process start the arm making sure to get your front side or glove arm and shoulder closed and throwing with it in place. Glove arm to be specific. EZ to get lazy and bad habits formed. Present your head on the back hip to insure weight placement in set up. c. Finish the throw with back leg coming through with your eyes up and head down allowing for a flat back finish. Stay finished for a count, we are in no hurry.

3.) After the 60 feet portion, move to 90 feet mark or in most cases the edge of the infield lip if on a field. You should walk it off if unknown. a. Incorporate your feet with a movement of clicking of heels keeping your head on your back hip making sure your back side weight starts back and not in middle or forward. Avoid crossing over with your feet as this could lead to throwing across your body later in routine and in pen. We are trying to create a positive muscle memory! b. Same as 60ft mark the loose arm loose grip and extension are keys. Velocity comes from the looseness from which the arm works not the effort you put into it. Challenge yourself to throw the ball with minimal effort but still on line. Your effort level ideally will be in the 75% range as your legs and back are doing the work not the arm. *Your brain controls your arm energy so control it! c. The amounts of effort you use at 90-120 feet are the difference between build up and tear down. Line drives and fly balls are tear down arm actions and can hurt the process of building toward a strong arm and delivery.

4.) 120 feet for off and in season throwing is the limit. There will be some that can go out further but that will be for specific reasons and not what should be done as a routine preparing for or during season. At 120 feet look to use the whole body in position to start and transfer weight with a solid arc allowing to feel maximum reach, which is measured by the feeling of your throwing side back muscle and your hand path going by your opposite side knee. Remember the tear down vs. build up process, as that is your responsibility since we are not there to measure your maturity level. Be a Pro while alone as this work will come out when others feel you pass them.

5.) Finally, after that allotted amount for the day at 120 feet, bring it back In to 60 feet for 3-5 throws with 60-foot emphasis to get fingers over the ball. Bring the muscle memory away from long length to fingers over the ball and beginning the pitching over the throwing process.

Key points of emphasis …

• Focus… always limit the conversation • Understand the times, distance and mechanics involved • “Feel good, throw hard” mentality is irresponsible • Fight through stiffness and understand pain

SESSION: Friday, January 10, 2020, 11:15AM – 12:05PM: Break-Out #1 TOPIC: Catching Appetizer: Communicating & Receiving PRESENTER: Jim Penders, Head Baseball Coach, University of Connecticut

1. Leader loaded word really means to put team first, only guy going the wrong way, team looks to catcher throughout the game (verbal, non-verbal) 2. Communicator (liaison with coaches and team, most important everyday player, perceptive enough to know differences in staff) 3. Good baseball i.q. (coach on the field, need to know pitcher’s strengths, hitter’s weaknesses, offensive strategies, defensive situations) 4. Positive person (needs to separate himself from individual negative experiences to stay positive for the team) 5. Defense is priority #1 (hit him down in the order to emphasize, use defensive charts instead of offensive)

STANCES - 3 positions an effective catcher must assume to aptly perform differing duties • important to make catchers understand these roles, and feel differences physiologically to aid them psychologically in performing their differing roles • each stance has a definitive utility and practicality, as they are the best physical postures for the duties of the catcher • each also allows the catcher to better understand his primary goals and secondary goals of the moment through his stance and posture • he knows what he has to do in situations, but he can also feel what his duties are by the markedly different stances he uses

Signs and Signal Communication - used prior to every pitch, and before assuming primary or secondary stances #1 duty is to communicate pitch selection clearly, yet covertly with pitcher and critical fielders • feet close together, toes pointed straight ahead (4-6 inches apart, but parallel) • knees closed (give signals to ) • chest high for balance and comfort (no shadows, authority) with belly button behind point of plate • glove hand shields sign from third base coach as an extension of left thigh (if catcher gets lazy with this, make him turn the palm out on the glove) • throwing hand and fingers are in contact with right groin, right elbow touching right hip, finger tips touching cup (hand goes between knees – no hesitation in presentation • position is one of stability, authority, and confidence, should be no strain

SIGNS Purpose - to communicate pitch selection to pitcher and critical fielders clearly and covertly • must be given on right groin with proper signal stance Nobody on 2nd base: Alternatives: one numerical sign for pitch type tape on fingers or polish one directional sign for pitch location slower sequence Man on 2nd base: body part signs with sequence four numerical signs phantom signs three directional signs #1 fastball pitcher and middle infielders know which is used in sequence #2 curve Pitcher shake off: #3 slider shakes head for change of pitch wiggle change stares for change of location #5 shake (no glove brush) fist pitchout thumb pick

www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com SESSION: Friday, January 10, 2020, 1:10PM – 2:10PM: On Deck Sports Batting Cage TOPIC: 5 Lead Ups for Fastball Command PRESENTER: Greg Moore, Saint Mary's College (CA) Head Coach & 2019 USA Baseball Collegiate Team Asst. Coach Important points: 3. Turning, Bringing, and Sticking: the glove • as soon as hand goes between knees, a signal is given • catcher should peek at hitter before giving sign • must beat the ball to the spot with • spread fingers the glove • use pinky finger for fastball outside to righty and with the • in and out, thumb up/thumb down #3 (never turn wrist) • thumb is last part of hand to touch • if using sequence, make it uniform until discovered, then ball except on low pitch change for everybody • turn the glove as catching the pitch • when using sequence, go slow enough for individual (takes practice) pitchers (not a race) • palm faces zone always except on low pitch DRILLS: “shadow box”, “coach holds ball”, “wheel with and without glove”, angle toss (two tossers) machine RECEIVING - what a good catcher does in addition to catching the pitch that forces the umpire to: 4. Gravity’s influence get a good look at a pitch • barely high and barely low pitches must be framed too • get on top of high and catch deep (let gravity take it and have to decide on ball/strike make it a 63 foot pitch) • get below low pitch with thumb and extended arm to stop call all pitches in the zone strikes gravity (make it a 59 footer) • sticking or push action and the in-between pitches (out call as many borderline balls strikes as possible and in) DRILLS: “partner on chair or on ground”, “wheel with and • If there were no umpire, we’d call this section without glove”, machine “CATCHING” and be done with it, but because the umpire plays such a large part in the game with balls and strikes, we must have a system of receiving to help him do his job (they need all the help they can get). Points of controversy

receiving is framing framing is funneling or Aspects of Receiving turning 1. Catch the pitch “soft hands” which pitches to bring and which to • with the 1 o’clock to 12 o’clock rotation, the trigger for stick the catch is done no sway guys pro vs. college & h.s. • body sway will help glove get to position for one-handed catch no practice necessary • bring the pitch with soft hands without doing the “egg toss take-away” or the “vacuum funnel” DRILLS: “catch with the step to”, tennis balls with bare hand, machine for rep’s

2. Framing: the body

• begins with stance (belly button on corner without giving away location or pitch) • only on pitches less than 6 inches off the black, or <6” above or below the zone • starts with the body sway (try to catch every strike with belly button behind ball) • head must also be behind ball DRILLS: “point drill”, “shadow box”, “shadow box with coach on side” www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com

SESSION: Friday, January 10, 2020, 2:25PM – 3:25PM: Break-Out #2 TOPIC: Catching Main Course: Blocking, Throwing and Beyond PRESENTER: Jim Penders, Head Baseball Coach, University of Connecticut

Secondary/Block-Throw stance - used with man or men on base, or with no men on base and two strikes on batter #1 duty is to stop and change direction of the ball • target must be as low as it was in primary, lean forward, head is same height • feet parallel and slightly wider than shoulders, toes slightly flared • knees are also wide with butt now parallel with knees • flat back, more of a lean for balance and low target • glove arm above left knee, bare hand closed behind glove or behind back (more difficult) • target in middle of body with index finger pointed to 1 o’clock (target is always in center of mass) • eyes look just over top of glove w/ head erect • position is one of greater mobility and anticipation

Aspects of Block/Throw 1. Catch the Pitch • presentation with slight sway still, pull back bare hand out of foul tip line of fire • center ball

DRILLS: Same drills as all receiving drills (as seen in “appetizer”), plus the 3-in-one react drill (no block, no going)

2. Block • takes heart and reps – anyone can do it, but they have to love it (not many love it) • be an athlete, knees inside feet – lateral movement from hips and knees, not feet • plug the holes (glove in five hole, barehand behind glove, arms are extensions of blocking surface - chest and gut) • soft, exhale • gain ground on 55 footers, drop on fastball

DRILLS: Point drill, glove leads down, 3 in one, softer balls, circle drill for containment and recover, hardguy drill

3. Throw • same mechanics as everyone else, just a “C” • from the feet up, gain ground, center ball, and stay back • anticipate and load weight • be an airplane, not a helicopter • three types of footwork – replace feet, rock and pivot, jab (jab is only one that is pitch specific) • don’t teach to 3B

DRILLS: No drills if good results (Thurman principle), Timed throws as often as possible, Rolling ball – stay back drill, exchange “figure skater drill”, throwing box in dirt drill, timed release, timed pop to pop, everyday long toss – no tapping drill, dorm room four seam drill, 3 in one

• Bunt Plays • Tag/Force Plays • Foul pop-ups • Pitchouts • Pickoffs • Decoys

SESSION: Friday, January 10, 2020, 2:25PM – 3:25PM: On Deck Sports Batting Cage TOPIC: The 6 F's of FUNdamental Infield Play PRESENTER: Marc DelPiano, Professional Scout, New York Yankees

The 6 F’s

1.) Feet • Pitcher’s 1st move: slight bend at the waist • Pitcher’s arm starts forward: small step forward with either foot • Down and quiet when the ball gets to the dirt area of the plate – Pick Your Hop • Begins with feet as part of 1st step and angles • Speed of ball will dictate angle of approach

2.) Field • Keep feet moving • Right-Left-Catch • When left foot hits, ball is in glove (rhythm and timing) • Proper Positioning • Wide base w/ flat back • Hands at top of triangle • Field ball in the center of the body

3.) Funnel • Bring hands into chest • Emphasizes soft hands • Break thumbs down out of glove

4.) Footwork • Right foot to left; left to target • Create distance and direction to target • Do not cross feet after funnel, create a strong front side

5.) Fire • Thumbs down • Fingers on top of the ball • Creating a short arm circle • Create direction to target with the lead arm • Weight transfer from back side to front (using the lower half) • Throw against a strong front side • Long extension out front taking throwing hand to the target

6.) Follow • Body will release (1 to 2 steps) towards the target • Creating carry and accuracy

It’s All about PRIDE!

➢ We don’t take batting practice---we take Mariner “Pride”

➢ Be Process oriented not result oriented o I.e.—Middle Away round vs Oppo round

➢ HeadFake: Batting Practice isn’t about the hitter. It’s about everyone else

Pre-Game Pride vs Practice Pride vs individual batting Practice

➢ Encourage your players to hit on field as opposed to cage Pre-Game ➢ Feel Good/ Get loose o A lesson I learned from Mal

➢ Track the ball (find release point and train eyes) o Time for hitters to learn their surroundings o And also defense to learn the field and conditions

➢ Work Away to in o Mike Trout Video/ Learn to square it up Practice Time sensitive—35 guys/18 hitters. You may only get 25-30 swings.

➢ Learn to square the ball up ➢ Learn a process ➢ Execution

Individual BP This is where we work individually or in small groups and really see development in the swing

➢ Breakdown of swing ➢ Skills and Drills o Off Set/ On Set; Breakers; 2 strike; No Pop/No Pull
