John Ebenezer Annan, Catharine Esther Beecher, Albert Taylor Bledsoe, Joseph C. Cabell, John Hartwell Cocke, Daniel Drake, James Hoge, Andrew Dousa Hepburn, Charles McGuffey Hepburn, Henrietta McGuffey Hepburn, Nicholas Longworth, Harriet McGuffey Love, Alexander H. McGuffey, Charles Spining McGuffey, Edward Deering Mansfield, Robert Cumming Schenck, John Witherspoon Scott, Winthrop B. Smith, Robert Livingston Stanton, Charles L. Telford, Noah Webster, Henry A. Wise, and Andrew Wylie are just some of the correspondents included in the collection. The collection also includes manuscripts of two of McGuffey‟s sermons and an unpublished manuscript that McGuffey wrote in 1871 regarding mental philosophy. In addition to other McGuffey family correspondence, journals and reminiscences kept by his daughter, Henrietta McGuffey Hepburn, and two diaries belonging to his grandson, Charles McGuffey Hepburn, provide details of McGuffey family life. Contracts, receipts and reprint permission letters pertaining to the McGuffey Readers can also be found in the collection. William Holmes McGuffey Family Papers Page 2 PROVENANCE OF THE COLLECTION Most of the papers were collected by Mrs. Mary (Thompson) Hughes and purchased from her estate circa 1948. A curator at the McGuffey Museum, located at the former Oxford home of William Holmes McGuffey, Mrs. Hughes was so interested in McGuffey that she amassed this collection of materials relating to him and his family.

    Ohio International Consortium George C. Burke Scholarship for Summer Study Abroad As a founding member of the Ohio International Consortium, George Burke retired from Cleveland State University in 2012 after serving that institution for 30 years. During his tenure at Cleveland State, he moved from International Advisor to Associate Dean of Students and the Director for the Center for International Students and Programs. After completing his Bachelor’s degree at John Carroll University, he went on to earn his graduate degree in Public Administration at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to beginning his professional career in international education, Burke joined the Peace Corps and spent seven months in Sanniquelle, Liberia as a community development volunteer. Burke has been an active member and leader within the field of international education. He has served many roles within NAFSA: Association of International Educators, including two terms as chair of Region VI. In addition to being a member of the Ohio International Consortium since its inception and serving as its chair from 2009-2011, he developed the Study Ohio program, a collaboration between the public and private universities in Ohio developed to better market higher education opportunities in the state to prospective international students. The Ohio International Consortium established this scholarship in 2014 in honor of George C. Burke’s many contributions to international education. We believe that executing on this civic responsibility immediately following eligibility -- which is what occurs for most Miami students -- can be important in developing lifelong participation and commitment to the process. Freedom Summer The Mississippi Summer Project of 1964, commonly known as Freedom Summer, was a creative campaign to shine the national spotlight on Jim Crow Mississippi. Activists, with the help of college student volunteers, created grassroots networks to provide education, register voters and provide community support to marginalized Mississippi communities. The key to unlock the South was the vote, and activists provided literacy education, citizenship schools, and nonviolent direct action training in order to get African Americans to the polls and reveal the violent resistance that they faced. The struggle of African American citizens to vote led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and by the 1980s, African American political participation in Mississippi exploded with black elected officials at all level of government: local, state and federal.
