Words to Know

• Absolution – the words said by the Priest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation which frees us from our sins • Confession – the telling of one’s sins to the Priest • Contrition – sorrow for the sin committed and resolution not to sin again • Evangelization – spreading of the Gospel message • Gloria – a prayer of praise said or sung during Mass • Minister – someone who helps others in the name of Christ • Ordination – through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, a Bishop, Priest or Deacon is made • Original Sin – the sin of Adam and Eve which is passed onto each of us • Paschal Mystery – the Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ • Sacrament – is a sign instituted by Jesus that gives us grace • Sacrament of Anointing – is administered by a Priest to those who are ill or in danger of death • Sacrament of Confirmation – a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit for an active life in the Church • Sacrament of Holy Orders – was given to the Apostles by Jesus & continues today when a Bishop, Priest, or Deacon is ordained • Sacrament of Matrimony – a partnership for life between a man and a woman blessed by the Church • Sign – is used to instruct (ex. the Sacraments are signs of our faith) • Transubstantiation – change of the Eucharistic bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ • Vocation – the calling or destiny we have in this life and hereafter
