The Fourth Sunday After Trinity The Fourth Sunday after Trinity 5 July AD 2020 Welcome in Jesus’ name! We pray God’s richest blessings on your receiving of His Word this holy day in this unusual setting. We look forward to the day when we will be able to gather together with you again in church as one body to be nourished by our heavenly Groom, Christ Jesus! TODAY’S READINGS “Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful” (Luke 6:36–42). The old Adam in us, however, wants to condemn and seek vengeance. To condemn, to avenge yourself, is to put yourself in the place of God. It is to fail to trust that He is just. Ultimately, it is to disbelieve that Jesus suffered the full vengeance for all wrongs. Only Christ is merciful as the Father is merciful. He is the one who overcame all evil with the good of His cross, forgiving even His executioners. Jesus is our Joseph, who comforts us with words of pardon and reconciliation (Gen 50:15–21). He is the One who does not condemn but gives life that runs over. Only through faith in Christ are we sons of the Father—being merciful, forgiving, doing good to our enemies. For in Christ we know that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (Rom 8:8–13). Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. No portion of this article may be copied, retransmitted, reposted, duplicated or otherwise used without the express written approval of the author. 15 The Sacrament of Holy Absolution Jesus institutes the Sacrament of Holy Absolution in the Matthew 6: [Jesus said,] “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”1 St. Paul uses similar language in his letter to the Ephesians: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”2 When a Christian forgives, he can be sure that his Lord is there3 working on the hearts and minds of sinners by forgiving sin, strengthening faith, and providing salvation. When it comes to numbering Absolution as a Sacrament, the Lutheran Church as a whole has long disagreed. This might be surprising to many who are either new to the Christian faith or have been lifelong Christians in the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church has always been unanimous when it comes to the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, yet there has always been some apprehension when including Absolution to their number. Even more surprising is the fact that the Book of Concord4 is very willing to consider Absolution a Sacrament, while many theologians refuse. In his defense of Absolution editor Steven Mueller raises this common Lutheran question: “I thought there were only two sacraments. Isn’t absolution [Roman] Catholic?” It is catholic – in the true sense of the word.

We live as his disciples. As Jesus’ disciples, we want to make good choices. The Holy Spirit guides us in making good choices. He is our special helper. Some choices are easy. I might choose whether to eat an apple or a banana for lunch. Other choices are not so easy. Sometimes I have to choose between what’s right and what’s wrong. This is called making a moral choice. If I’m not sure a choice is a good one, this is what I do: 1. I stop before I act 2. I think about the Ten Commandments 3. I ask help from my parents, my teacher, a priests, or a deacon 4. I pray to the Holy Spirit to help me choose. We are Tempted to Sin Even when we try to make good choices, sometimes we are tempted. We are tempted to act in ways that hurt ourselves or other people. When we turn away from God’s laws, we sin. Sin hurts our friendship with God. Sometimes turning away from God and others can be very serious. It is a mortal sin. A mortal sin is a serious choice to turn away from God’s laws.
