OTHER THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Culture

Surabaya is a vibrant metropolis with a very diverse community in it. Many of the residents come from various cultural background, from Javanese, Madurese, Indo-Chinese, and many others. Since some countries have their general consulates stationed in Surabaya, the city also welcomes many expatriates every year, both for education, business, and vacation.

As part of the Java island, most of Surabayanese speaks Javanese with their unique dialect called the “Suroboyoan”. This dialect distinctively sounds assertive and frank with minimum use of humble or polite language, and might be perceived as harsh by people from other regions of Java. Here are some notes about the culture of Surabaya you might need to be aware of while communicating with the locals: • Raising your voice in public may be construed as a grave insult. Please be aware of it. • In Java, the youths must speak in a polite language to older people. • In general, Indonesians are very friendly. So please do not be uncomfortable if they ask you about personal information, such as age and family.

Exploring Surabaya in Safety

UNAIR and Surabaya are friendly environments, however you might want to read the following notes to ensure your safety in public spaces: • It is better NOT to use your mobile phone/tablets when you’re in a desolate public space without any security staff around or when you’re on a crowded public transportation. • DO NOT leave your belongings unattended for any reason, especially in public places (e.g. restaurant, bus, café, mosque, etc.). It is advised to always put your belongings in front of you.

Everyday Surabaya bustles with a huge flow of traffic in and out of the city. Crossing the street in Surabaya might be a challenge for visitors. Here are some tips for you: • Please raise your hand while crossing street on a zebra cross. • If footbridges are available, please use them to cross the street. • At some places, there are pedestrian traffic lights. Please press the button on the traffic light post and wait until the light turn green before crossing the street.

Climate and Weather

Since Indonesia is lying along the equator, the climate is tropical with two seasons (i.e. wet season and dry season). During the conference, Surabaya will be in wet season, so you might expect some rain during your stay for the ICP-HESOS. Therefore, bringing your own pocket umbrella is advised.

A typical day during wet season in Surabaya is usually still very warm with an average temperature of 33 degree Celsius. During the night or rain, the temperature might drop to around 24 degree. Here is the weather forecast during the conference date:

Temperature Date Forecast High Low Friday, 16/11 38º 22º Mostly sunny; very warm

Saturday, 17/11 37º 22º Mostly sunny; very warm

Sunday, 18/11 38º 22º Mostly sunny; very warm

“REOG PONOROGO” DANCE Reog is a traditional dance that became the main identity for Ponorogo Regency. Reog National Festival is held every year along with the anniversary of Ponorogo regency and the Grebeg Suro celebration. Reog dance is also staged nightly on the full moon in Paseban, Ponorogo town square. Reog tells the story about the struggle of a prince who will propose to a beautiful princess.[1] Reog Ponorogo tells the story of a mythical battle between the King of Ponorogo and the magical lion-like creature called Singa . Singa Barong Mask The Reog dance of Ponorogo involves a lion figure known as the singa barong. Singa Barong is a large mask usually made from a tiger's or leopard's head skin, on the mask is a large fan adorned with real peafowl feathers. The Singa Barong mask is notoriously heavy and the dancer of the Singa Barong has to carry the mask of about 30 – 40 kg in weight and is supported by the strength of their teeth. A single dancer, or warok, carries the heavy lion mask by his teeth. He is credited with supernatural abilities and strength. The warok may also carry an adolescent boy or girl on its head. When carrying an adolescent boy or girl on his head, the Reog dancer holds weight of up to 100 kilograms in total. Holding the heavy big mask by biting, the warok relies on the strength of his jaws, neck and shoulder muscles. The great mask spans over 2.5 meters with genuine tiger skin and real peacock feathers. It has gained international recognition as the world's largest mask. Dance Performance The leading figures in Reog Ponorogo performance includes:

1. Klono Sewandono, A man in regal attire wearing a mask with a proud and pompous dance and plays the role as the King of Ponorogo 2. Bujang Anom are rough youthful men wearing red masks, they perform acrobatic dances and sometimes also involve trances. 3. Jathil, the youthful and handsome men riding horses made of weaved bamboo, similar to the dance. Today, Jathil is usually performed by female dancers. 4. Warok, plays as the Singa Barong, the mythical creature. The one who is allowed to perform this dance is called warok. A warok is the honorary title of the local hero or strongman of the village who possesses both exceptional spiritual and physical strength. The dance itself is a demonstration of physical strength.

Reog Ponorogo usually consists of three sets of dances; each dance is performed by several dancers:

1. The first dance is the opening dance, performed by Bujang Anom, male dancers who wear black costumes. The costume describes rough men with intimidating moustaches and other masculine symbols. 2. The second dance is the Jaran Kepang dance performed by Jatil; it is originally performed by a gemblak, a handsome and youthful teenage boy wearing colourful costumes. Today female dancers usually play this role. 3. The third dance is the main attraction of the show; it is performed by all the Reog dancers. The warok as the main male dancer, wearing the large and heavy lion mask, dances in the centre of the stage while the other dancers dance around him. To demonstrate the warok's extraordinary strength, the Jatil rides on top of the lion mask and is carried around.

“RATOEH JAROE” DANCE Introduction Ratoeh Jaroe dance was created around 2008, then officially named “Ratoeh Jaroe” at 2011. This art performance is made for reviving the spirit of Aceh people from the downturn that caused by conflicts or disaster that happened in Aceh. Afterward, dancers from Aceh combines some traditional dances that already exist to become a new dance that are dynamic, enthusiastic, and modern.

History The name Ratoeh Jaroe; consist of two words, Ratoeh, is an Arabic language that means “praising God by singing some prayers” and Jaroe means “hands”. So Ratoeh Jaroe could be interepreted as praising God by singing some prayers with hands. It is most likely the combination of , Ratoeh Doek, Likoek Puloe, Ratep , and Ratoeh Bantai dances.

Motion and Music Ratoeh Jaroe dance highlight its hands motion rather than body. This dance consists of sit, kneel, bend the body, clapping chest, shaking head, and moving hands to the left and right for its motion. Each of the dancers will perform the same motion, so it takes time to make them looks unified. Beside those unique motions, Ratoeh Jaroe dance is also accompanied by a Rapa’i (musical instrument) and poetry in Aceh Language that sung by a person called Syahi. But sometimes the dancers will have sung the poetry along with Syahi.

Dynamic and simultaneous motion in Ratoeh Jaroe dance is a form of partnership that is able to be built beautifully. All various differences that exist are not a problem, instead, it combines to become a harmony that complete each other. It reflects that we can deal with all current complex issues which challenge the mental health in global community.
