Baghawad Gita, Class 184: Chapter 14, Verses 19 to 14 Shloka # 14. 9: 14.9 O scion of the Bharata dynasty, sattva attaches one to happiness, rajas to action, while tamas, covering up knowledge, leads to inadvertence als Continuing his teachings Swamiji said today, in the last few classes, we saw that our higher nature known as the sakshi svarupam is ever nirgunam and therefore is free from the influence of the three gunas; but our vyavaharika nature, our lower nature, which is called ahamkara is a mixture of the body-mind complex, as well as the reflected consciousness. And till the ahamkara consists of the body-mind complex and till the body-mind complex is born out of prakrti, the ahamkara can never escape from the three gunas. And therefore, our body-mind complex is made up of three gunas and the ahamkara which consists of this body-mind complex is the necessarily made up of these three gunas, and therefore, we can never escape from them. We have to live with this saguna ahamkara. And once we are forced to live with this ahamkara, it is better that we understand the ahamkara well, so that we know how to handle it properly. Science is able to handle the nature more and more only because science has been able to know nature more and more. Knowledge gives the capacity for better handling. And therefore Sri Krishna says: you have to understand your own ahamkara very well. For that, you must know what type of ahamkara you have; which guna is dominant, which guna is in middle; the second place, and which guna is the lowest; better you understand and you also know how these gunas influence your vyavaharika life; both material life, as well as the spiritual life.

From the Dean’s Desk Many little steps joined one after the other is what makes success possible. The Second Term is always the most eventful time of the academic year. This term has been a potpourri of events as the Junior College students participated in a miscellany of sporting events like the Z.P’s, Zonal, Regionals and Nationals as well as literary activi- ties such as debates, elocutions, creative writing, etc. and won accolades in the same. ‘Mama Mia’- the annual musical concert saw some thundering performances on one hand while the Coco Weekend was a resounding success in our endeavour towards healthy and conscious living. The Marathon organised on the 2nd of October, 2019 in aid of the Atkarwadi village in our effort of Rebuilding lives received an overwhelming response from our alumni and parents as well. After the hectic 2nd term examination schedule, the staff and students had a joyful day of unwinding at our picnic to Imagica. The term ended with the much awaited Annual Inter-House Athletic Meet and the 8th edition of the All Maharashtra Anglos Meet. To conclude, I would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to our Principal, Mr. J. Edwin, and the members of the Governing Body for all their support and encouragement. It is also significant how it presents the ongoing process of the construction of personal ‘identity’ and the cultural determination of one’s selfhood. In the Indian subcontinent, the case is more interesting and complex as nation building takes place in heterogeneous, even fragmented lingual and cultural societies all over our country. The idea of ‘nation’ in the Subcontinent is much complicated, where the question of ethnicity and other forms of religious and political identities play a key role. My paper entitled “Exploring the Illusive Borderlines: Construction of Identity in the Indian Subcontinent” is a very modest attempt to get a glimpse into how the formation of borderlines by the partition of India delineates the construction of racial, religious and cultural ‘identity’ of an individual. This paper aims at studying few short stories like Intizar Husain’s “An Unwritten Epic”, SaadatHasanManto’s “Toba Tek Singh” and films like Vol.1, Issue 3, 2016 Page 67 : An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in English ISSN 2455-7544 www.daathvoyagejournal.com Vol.1, No.3, September, 2016 SrijitMukherji’s “Rajkahini”, Deepa Mehta’s “Earth”, exploring the inherent complexities that arise while defining one’s identity, which is determined by one’s socio-cultural and religious position.

  • Beyond the Films Themselves Hollywood Is Not Just Fancy Dresses and Gossip: Vermeer Rarity Exists in the Artwork
BEYOND THE FILMS THEMSELVES HOLLYWOOD IS NOT JUST FANCY DRESSES AND GOSSIP: Vermeer Rarity Exists in the Artwork by Dwight Cleveland Movies are arguably the most influential art form of the 20th Century. Everyone loves the movies the world over. U.S. film companies have averaged $1.25 billion in global receipts each year for over 15 years. In terms of intellectual consumption it has been one of the U.S.’s largest exports every year since the early 1930’s. One can now view current films on hand-held devices like iPads and mobile phones, at home On Demand or with a purchased or rented DVD, or old-school style “at a local theatre near you.” The options are ubiquitous by necessity. Movies have given us words to live by, iconic phrases that are universal: “Make my day.” “You look’n at me?” “I’ll be back!” “You can’t handle the truth.” “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Where on earth would one have to go to find someone who didn’t understand these words? The movies are a way of life and an influence on everyone, everywhere. So if the movies are such an integral part of our cultural fabric, why do the posters advertising those films mean so little to most people, especially industry insiders? Back in the day, film posters started out as the only advertising agent for a newly released movie. During the early years, the entire ad budget went into the artwork, design and printing of the posters. From the teens through the 1930’s, they were beautiful stone lithographs with sophisticated graphics and fully saturated color schemes.
