Source: Mid-day.com, Date: February 25, 2012 While the city is abuzz with the latest news about Saif Ali Khan and a South African businessman, Iqbal Sharma's fight at Taj Mahal hotel recently, it is interesting what kind of reaction this altercation has evoked. While followers may be cleaved into the for-Saif, against-Saif camps, there are the skeptics who believe this may be a publicity stunt for Saif's forthcoming movie, Agent Vinod. While this may sound incredulous, it shows the trust deficit created by the huge hype and the publicity-ke-liye-kuch-bhi-karega tendency these days. -

Queer Ho Naa Ho: the Hindi Gay Film in the Twenty-First Century
Queer Ho Naa Ho: The Hindi Gay Film In the 11. twenty-first century sahir avik d'souza Edited by: ishika chatterjee In the last two decades, mainstream Hindi films have evolved significantly from the traditional family-values pictures of the 1990s and before. When specifically looking at LGBTQ+ representation, we find, in the twenty-first century, a growing acceptance in the first ten years or so, followed by an understanding and recognition of queer identity in the next ten years. In the years since, however, mainstream Hindi films have made “an effort to understand the cultural phenomena of the queer movement” (Joseph, 2016). This paper will examine this evolution of queer themes in Hindi films of the twenty-first century. I will discuss the films mentioned above in greater detail to understand how Hindi queer cinema, still in its nascent stages, is grappling and coming to terms with being gay in India. In the early 1990s, film critic B. Ruby Rich coined the to be hesitant in filming the stories of queer people. term “New Queer Cinema” to describe a movement However, in the twenty-first century, India as a society amongst independent filmmakers in North America to is slowly coming to terms with the gay lived experience, make films foregrounding queer people and identities. which is therefore gradually finding expression within Rich first noticed (and revelled in) this new development the erstwhile inflexibly heteronormative confines of the in 1991 at the Toronto International Film Festival; she mainstream Hindi film. wrote in Sight & Sound the next year that “[m]usic was in the air in Toronto in September 1991” (Rich, 1992).
