Bitmmm, of the Devoiishire Regiiiieiit, attached Special Brigade Royal Engineers, was reported killed in action 011 Juiie 20th, 1917. Captain Brearley was a native of Birmingham, being the elder son of Rlr. and iWs. Brearley, of Small Heath, Birmingham. He was educated atl King Edward’s School, Camp Hill, and the High School, Birmingham, where he obtaiiied several scholarships. He proceeded to Cambridge in 1909, where’ he was a scholar of Emmaiiuel College. In 1912 he graduated, having obtained a First Class in Part I. of the Natural Scieiice Tripos and a Secoiid Class in Part PI. of the same Tripos. During his university career he rowed and obtaiiied his second May colours. Prior to the war he was science master at Exeter School. I30 was a Published on 01 January 1918. He was transferred to the Royal Engineers in July, 1916, arid proceeded to the front in April last, year. His brother, Sec.-Lieut. Norman Blackbuix Brearley, Royal Warwickshire Regimelit, u7as killecl in nci ioii in Mesopotamia in April last year. The oiily surviving child, Lieut. Selwyri Black- bur11 Brearley, is serving with the Devoiishire Regiiiieiit. Captain Brearley was twenty-seven years of age. BERTRAM HAWARD BUTTLE. UOHNMARCH 20~15, 1588; DIED OCTOBER ST, 1917. Butt-le, when firstl I knew him, was a boy iii the former People’s Palace Technical Schools. After a short) interval at West Ham Polytechnic, he returned to Eastl London College and took the Science Course, graduating with Honours in Chemistry at the B.Sc. exainiiiation in 190‘7. After taking his degree, lie1 went on with post-graduate work, the results appearing in the Tm~~sa~tions.* He took up teaching, aiid was Science Master at, Archbishop Holgate’s School, York, when Professor Illeldola asked me if I could recommend anyone for a denionstratorship a tl Finsbury Technical College. Knowiiig that they both possessed a coniinoii character- istip, absolute scientific truthfulness, Buttle seemed the right man, and, as might have been expected, fully justified the choice. Almost immediately a€ter the outbreak of war, Buttla joined the University and Public Schools Section of the) Royal Fusiliers, but was drafted for service in France with the Gas Section of the Royal Engineers iii July, 1915. After service with the Mediter- ranean Expeditionary Force in thel winter of 1915-16, he returned to England, obtained his coinmissioii in May, 1916, and was in France and Belgium until last autumn, when he was wounded by an aeroplane1 bomb and died in hospital an hour later. The letters of sympathy received by his parents give an idea of the iinpressioii Buttls gave of his character to those who knew him. ‘The Rev. W. Johnson, formerly headmaster of Archbishop Hol- gate’s School, wrote: “He was such a real inan, so t.horougli and sincere that he gained everybody’s affection in my school, both staff Published on 01 January 1918. It’is rare to find such wisdom with goodness in so young a mau, and much as I felt it his advantage to leave me, I mourned his departure from niy staff as that of a dear friend. “His sense of duty was very high and his influence on my boys iiiost excellent .” Major Monier-Williams wrote: “His death is a great grief to me, personally, as I was very much attached to hini. He had been with me for several weeks and had always showii the greatest, keen- ness and interest in his work. He was extraordinarily cheerful and willing, aid nothing ever seemed to be too much trouble for him. Such was Buttle, honest,, industrious, keen on his work, aid always cheerful and ready to do a kind action. Personally, I recall the many pleasant days speiit working together. His friends iriourii his loss deeply. J. T. HKWITT. NORSMAN PH L1,LIPS CAMPBELL. BORNRPIUL 25~11, 1886; KILLEDIN ACTIONMAY ~KD,1917.. NORMANPHILLIPS CAMPBELL was the son of Mr. James Campbell, of Montreal, and was born in Chicago on April 25th, 1886. Re received his early education at the High School, Montreal, ath Cliftonville, Canada, and Dulwich College. He entered Balliol College, Oxford, in 1904, taking his degree in 1907 and becoming M.A. in 1913. Specialising in physical chem- istry, he published in collaboration with Hartley papers in this journal on the solubility of iodine in water (T., 1908, 93, 741), and a new apparatus for preparing conductivity water (did., 428). In 1908 he decided to go to Ceylon to take up a post' under the Church Missionary Society at Trinity College, Kandy, one of the largest secondary schools in the colony. On the outward voyage he carried outl an investigation of the salinity of the Indian Ocean with the aid of Manley's differential densimeter, the results being Published on 01 January 1918. Downloaded 28/10/2014 04:54:09. subsequently published in thel Prmeediizgs of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (33,124). Campbell worked in Kandy from October, 1908, until the end of 1914. Although his teaching and duties as a social worker amongst his pupils (which entered very largely into his life) left him little time for research work, he carried out an investigation on the ratk of crystal growth, which was published in the Trans- actions for 1915 (T., 1915, 107, 475). In December, 1914, he returned to England and enlisted as a private in the1 London Scottish, shortly afterwards obtaining a commission in the Oxf ordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, and transferring to the Royal Engineers Special Brigade when it was formed. He was wounded at Loos in 1915, but was soon able to return to duty. In May, 1916, he was promoted Temporary Captain; he was killed in action on May 3rd, 1917, leaving his wife and two young children. His many friends have View Article Online 0H LT 1J-4 RY N OTIC:RS . 303 cause to lament the death of a man of conspicuous ability and of singular nobility of character, whose death for his country was typical of his life of devotion to others and to his duty. A. F. J. EDWARD WILLIAM LANCHESTER FOXELL. BORNJULY 7~13, 1884; DIEDJUNE 11~~~ 1917. EDWARDWILLIAM LANCHESTER FOXELL was the third son of the Rev. W. J. Foxell, Rector of St. Swithin’s, E.C. He graduated in science at University College, London, under Sir William Ramsay, and was appointed in 1907 a Master in the Science School and Junior House Master in Christ’s Hospital. For many years he was an officer in the O.T.C., becoming O.C. on Colonel Board- man’s departure for active service. In Christmas, 1914, he resigned the O.T.C. and was gazetted Captain in the Buffs. During service at the front he fell ill with trench-fever, and died in France of appendicitis on June llth, 1917. Those who were1 so fortunate as to know Mr. Foxell intimately recognised in him a man of versatile attainments. BORN1880; KILLEDJN ACTIONAPRIL 11~~,1917. MAURICEKEMP-WELCH was born at Bristol in 1880. He was edu- cated at Clifton College and King’s College, Cambridge, taking the Natural Science Tripos in 1903. He was an honorary scholar of his College. On leaving Cambridge, he entered business life, dealing with the commercial chemistry of oils, in which he was greatly interested. He conducted a number of important experiments on wood-oil. Iinmediately after the outbreak of war he applied himself to adapting German methods in rublbber, and with Mr. Hadfield devised a process of coating canvas with rubber which promised well for the future. Although his concern with these devices was in the first instance commercial, the one characteristic he always showed was science for science’ sake. He enlisted in November, 1915, in the O.T.C. at Lincoln’s Inn. He went to France with the 10th Batt. Yorkshire Regiment in June, 1916, and fought through the battles of the Somme. He was killed 0x1 April 11th near ISeniii-sur-Cojeuil. Those who knew of his scientific work regret that his ingenuity, which had just begun 60 produce valuable results, should now be permanently lost.
