  • Notions of Self and Nation in French Author
University of Connecticut OpenCommons@UConn Doctoral Dissertations University of Connecticut Graduate School 6-27-2016 Notions of Self and Nation in French Author- Aviators of World War II: From Myth to Ambivalence Christopher Kean University of Connecticut - Storrs, [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations Recommended Citation Kean, Christopher, "Notions of Self and Nation in French Author-Aviators of World War II: From Myth to Ambivalence" (2016). Doctoral Dissertations. 1161. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/1161 Notions of Self and Nation in French Author-Aviators of World War II: From Myth to Ambivalence Christopher Steven Kean, PhD University of Connecticut, 2016 The traditional image of wartime aviators in French culture is an idealized, mythical notion that is inextricably linked with an equally idealized and mythical notion of nationhood. The literary works of three French author-aviators from World War II – Antoine de Saint- Exupéry, Jules Roy, and Romain Gary – reveal an image of the aviator and the writer that operates in a zone between reality and imagination. The purpose of this study is to delineate the elements that make up what I propose is a more complex and even ambivalent image of both individual and nation. Through these three works – Pilote de guerre (Flight to Arras), La Vallée heureuse (The Happy Valley), and La Promesse de l’aube (Promise at Dawn) – this dissertation proposes to uncover not only the figures of individual narratives, but also the figures of “a certain idea of France” during a critical period of that country’s history.

  • Agenda Item 6B
Page 182 Agenda Item 6b REPORT TO: Urban Renewal Policy & Performance Board DATE: 18 June 2008 REPORTING OFFICER: Strategic Director, Environment SUBJECT: The ‘Heart of Halton’ Plaque Scheme WARDS: Borough wide 1.0 PURPOSE OF THE REPORT 1.1 Halton has many famous places, people and landmark events, all of which have in some way shaped Halton and the towns and the parishes within the borough. Currently no one record of the achievements, places or people has been brought together in one celebratory scheme. This report sets out proposals to establish such a scheme – ‘The Heart of Halton’ which would be similar to the Civic Trust’s Blue Plaque scheme. It will seek to identify and celebrate where Halton’s achievers, people and activities took place or lived. 2.0 RECOMMENDED: That 1) The Board comments on the proposal to establish the Heart of Halton scheme 2) Subject to the Board’s agreement, a further report be brought before the Board, setting out the costs and operational requirements for implementing the scheme 3.0 BACKGROUND 3.1 The towns of Runcorn and Widnes and the various borough Parishes have much to be proud of. From ground breaking scientific achievements to contributions to popular music and contemporary society being born or bred within Halton’s boundaries. 3.2 The achievements and innovation may have happened elsewhere had it not been for the way in which Halton became a centre of excellence for a number of companies and individuals who decided to build their businesses or homes in the area. Examples of Halton’s rich and varied heritage can be found in appendix 1 of this report.

  • Sir Robert Ludwig Mond. 273 Sir Robert Ludwig Mond, LL.D., F.R.S
Sir Robert Ludwig Mond. 273 Sir Robert Ludwig Mond, LL.D., F.R.S. THE death of Sir Robert Ludwig Mond, which occurred in Paris on October 22, 1938, deprived this world of a man who was beloved by hosts of friends in many countries and who had devoted his life to the advancement and promotion of science, the well-being of humanity, and the cause of civilisation. At the International Congress of Chemistry held in Rome during May 1938, he was aptly described by Sir Robert Robinson as the "great ambassador of science and friendship amongst the nations." He was born on September 9, 1867, at Farnworth, near Widnes in Lancashire, the eldest son of the famous chemist and industrialist, Dr Ludwig Mond, F.R.S., and was educated at Cheltenham College, St Peter's College, Cambridge, the Zurich Polytechnikum, and the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. After this very thorough training, he was chosen by his father to assist him in his scientific researches and his great industrial undertakings. In 1897 he became a director of Brunner, Mond & Company. He rendered Dr Ludwig Mond invaluable assistance in the investigation of the metal carbonyls and the establish- ment of the famous Mond nickel process, becoming a Director, and later Chairman, of the Mond Nickel Company. Robert Mond deserves a special place in science for his own researches on the metal carbonyls, which amongst other things led to the discovery of cobalt nitrosyl carbonyl. These investigations and many others were continued and extended in the laboratory which he set up in his country house at Combe Bank, near Sevenoaks in Kent.

  • 'Outside the Circle of One's Own Experience': George Orwell, Kylie Tennant and the Politics of Poverty During the Yellow
‘Outside the Circle of One’s Own Experience’: George Orwell, Kylie Tennant and the Politics of Poverty During the Yellow Book Period ELLA MUDIE INDEPENDENT AUTHOR AND SCHOLAR Today, the extremity of the many situations within which George Orwell (born Eric Blair, 1903-1950) placed himself with a view to writing about them is widely appreciated. It is part of the Orwell legend, for instance, that the author wrote to his publisher from the battlefront in Spain explaining that he would like to ‘come out of this alive if only to write a book about it’ (Orwell to Gollancz). That the young Orwell lived among tramps in London and washed dishes as a plongeur in Parisian hotels is likewise frequently mentioned alongside his pilgrimage into the homes of impoverished miners which forms the basis of his reportage memoir, The Road to Wigan Pier (1937). While the ‘write what you know’ mantra is now commonplace, George Watson has argued that ‘Orwell was the first writer of consequence in the European tradition . to make things happen to himself in order that he should write out what happened’ (657). Watson’s observation—intended as an affirmation of sorts—can also be taken as a yardstick against which to measure the polarised responses that Orwell’s reliance on lived experience attracts. As Peter Marks has pointed out, ‘Orwell functions almost as a test case for the protean nature of reputation’ (85). In light of the growing scepticism directed towards the use of the participant-observer mode as a literary device, Orwell’s present-day legacy as a champion of the poor and the oppressed (Rodden; Ingle) appears increasingly unstable.

British and German Textbook Publishers: A Guide to Archive Collections. Eckert. Dossiers 12 (2017). urn:nbn:de:0220‐2017‐0162. British and German Textbook Publishers: A Guide to Archive Collections 3 Introduction Lars Müller Historic research is predominantly dependent upon access to source materials. The archives of textbook publishers contain material that has great potential for innovative new studies, but research in this area is hindered by a lack of access to these sources and by their great disparity. This archive guide aims to redress this situation. It provides brief information about existing archive collections and can act as a starting point for locating source material. In addition it represents the hope that the increasing interest in archive-based research into textbooks and educational materials will stimulate new research. Existing studies using archive material from textbook publishers have tended to focus on individual publishing houses meaning that international comparative analyses are a significant desideratum of research in this field. This archive guide primarily provides information about German and British textbook publishers. Defining which publishing houses fall into those categories is complicated by two main factors. The first of these is that many publishing houses were, and still are, international companies producing textbooks for diverse countries and regions; either through subsidiaries or agreements with local publishers.
