Character Roles in the Estonian Versions of the Dragon Slayer (At 300)
“THE THREE SUITORS OF THE KING’S DAUGHTER”: CHARACTER ROLES IN THE ESTONIAN VERSIONS OF THE DRAGON SLAYER (AT 300) Risto Järv The first fairy tale type (AT 300) in the Aarne-Thompson type in- dex, the fight of a hero with the mythical dragon, has provided material for both the sacred as well as the profane kind of fabulated stories, for myth as well as fairy tale. The myth of dragon-slaying can be met in all mythologies in which the dragon appears as an independent being. By killing the dragon the hero frees the water it has swallowed, gets hold of a treasure it has guarded, or frees a person, who in most cases is a young maiden that has been kidnapped (MNM: 394). Lutz Rörich (1981: 788) has noted that dragon slaying often marks a certain liminal situation – the creation of an order (a city, a state, an epoch or a religion) or the ending of something. The dragon’s appearance at the beginning or end of the sacral nar- rative, as well as its dimensions ‘that surpass everything’ show that it is located at an utmost limit and that a fight with it is a fight in the superlative. Thus, fighting the dragon can signify a universal general principle, the overcoming of anything evil by anything good. In Christianity the defeating of the dragon came to symbolize the overcoming of paganism and was employed in saint legends. The honour of defeating the dragon has been attributed to more than sixty different Catholic saints. In the Christian canon it was St. -

But there are good stories enough left, and it is hoped that some in the Red Fairy Book may have the attraction of being less familiar than many of the old friends. The tales have been translated, or, in the case of those from Madame d'Aulnoy's long stories, adapted, by Mrs. Hunt from the Norse, by Miss Minnie Wright from Madame d'Aulnoy, by Mrs. Lang and Miss Bruce from other French sources, by Miss May Sellar, Miss Farquharson, and Miss Blackley from the German, while the story of `Sigurd' is condensed by the Editor from Mr. William Morris's prose version of the `Volsunga Saga.' The Editor has to thank his friend, M. Charles Marelles, for permission to reproduce his versions of the `Pied Piper,' of `Drakestail,' and of `Little Golden Hood' from the French, and M. Henri Carnoy for the same privilege in regard to `The Six Sillies' from La Tradition. Lady Frances Balfour has kindly copied an old version of `Jack and the Beanstalk,' and Messrs. Document Type: Critical essay Full Text: COPYRIGHT 2006 Gale, COPYRIGHT 2007 Gale, Cengage Learning [(essay date 1988) In the following essay, Tatar examines the textual history of the Bluebeard folktale in Nursery and Household Tales, contrasting narrative elements of "Mary's Child" and "Fowler's Fowl."] Fairy-tale beauties may all be very much alike, but there are two quite different types of beasts in the Grimms' Nursery and Household Tales. First, there are the animal-grooms who make life unpleasant for many a female protagonist: these are the frogs, bears, hedgehogs, and other creatures that press themselves on attractive young girls. But these beasts invariably turn out to be handsome young princes in disguise and generally prove to be perfect gentlemen. The real fairy-tale beasts, even if they are beasts in only the figurative rather than the literal sense of the term, turn out to be murderers masquerading as civilized men: Bluebeard, the Robber Bridegroom (in the tale of that title), and the wizard in "Fowler's Fowl" ("Fitchers Vogel") are the most prominent examples in the Nursery and Household Tales. Bluebeard, the most infamous of this entire lot of beasts, entered the pages of the Grimms' collection, but only in its first edition. For the second, revised edition of 1819, the Grimms eliminated the tale, evidently because it was too close in both substance and verbal realization to its French source. -

This volume is organized by topic into seven different segments. Part I is filled with stories for children, while Part 2 is filled with popular stories for adult. In Part 3, Tolstoy discreetly condemns capitalism in his fairy tale "Ivan the Fool." Fairytales in the German Tradition
German/LACS 233: Fairytales in the German Tradition Tuesday/Thursday 1:30-2:45 Seabury Hall S205 Julia Goesser Assaiante Seabury Hall 102 860-297-4221 Office Hours: Tuesday/Thursday 9-11, or by appointment Course description: Welcome! In this seminar we will be investigating fairytales, their popular mythos and their longevity across various cultural and historical spectrums. At the end of the semester you will have command over the origins of many popular fairytales and be able to discuss them critically in regard to their role in our society today. Our work this semester will be inter-disciplinary, with literary, sociological- historical, psychoanalytic, folklorist, structuralist and feminist approaches informing our encounter with fairytales. While we will focus primarily on the German fairytale tradition, in particular, the fairytales collected by the Brothers Grimm, we will also read fairytales from other cultural and historical contexts, including contemporary North America. Course requirements and grading: in order to receive a passing grade in this course you must have regular class attendance, regular and thoughtful class participation, and turn in all assignments on time. This is a seminar, not a lecture-course, which means that we will all be working together on the material. There will be a total of three unannounced (but open note) quizzes throughout the semester, one in-class midterm exam, two five-page essays and one eight-page final essay assignment. With these essays I hope to gauge your critical engagement with the material, as well as helping you hone your critical writing skills. Your final grade breaks down as follows: Quizzes 15% Midterm 15% 2- 5 page essays (15% each) 30% 1 8 page essay 20% Participation 20% House Rules: ~Class attendance is mandatory. -
