In his first season as head coach, Shantz led the Mavericks to a 13-14 record and a berth in the RMAC Tournament. Ryan Stephen earned first team All-RMAC accolades. The Mavericks also won the Paul W. Brechler Award for the top GPA among RMAC Men’s Basketball teams under the first year skipper.

In his second year the Mavericks improved to 19-10 and earned a berth in the RMAC Tournament. CMU posted a win against the highest ranked team Mesa has even beat with a win at the #2 ranked team in the country on the road at University Colorado-Colorado Springs. The Mavericks had 2 ALL-RMAC selections with Ryan Stephan garnering first team for the second year in a row.

In his third season the Mavericks improved to 21-9 and claimed the Rocky Division Championship. Ryan Stephan was CCA National Player of the Year, South Central Region Player of the Year and RMAC Player of the Year. Eimer Lopez and CJ Davis were All RMAC Honorable Mention.

During his fourth season as head coach, Shantz coached Eimer Lopez to All-RMAC Second Team honors.

As a coach at CMU for 19 years Shantz helped the Mavericks win two RMAC Championships, four NCAA National Tournament bids and seven RMAC West Division Championships and one Rocky Division Championship. In his tenure at CMU he helped recruit 12 First Team All-RMAC selections and a total of 44 All-Conference players, 30 Academic All-Conference Players, 3 RMAC Player of the Years (Jeff Boese, 2001 - Michael Dominguez, 2010 – Ryan Stephan, 2016). Michael Dominguez was a All-American in 2010 and North Central Region Player of the Year. In 2016 Ryan Stephan was CCA National Player of the Year, South Central Region Player of the Year and RMAC Player of the Year. He was also selected to play in the NABC Division II All-Star game in Frisco, TX.

A graduate of Colorado Mesa University (formerly Mesa State College), Shantz played two years for the Mavericks, including the 1994-95 season in which Mesa State finished 20-9 and were RMAC Champions and earned a berth to the NCAA National Tournament. He sat out the 1995-96 season to recover from knee surgery. In 1996-97, his senior year, he started all 28 games when the Mavericks went 21-7 and won the West Divi- sion Championship. He ranks eighth all-time in 3-point field goals made (74).

Prior to attending Mesa State, Shantz spent two years at Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif. He was voted Most Valuable Player while averag- ing 18 points and 10 rebounds per game. A native of San Diego, Calif., he attended Mount Carmel High School.

Shantz earned his bachelor’s degree in 1997 in corporate fitness and a master’s degree in 2005 in physical education from Adams State College.

Shantz is married to the former Molley Wilson. Molley is a graduate of Mesa State College and is a reading specialist at Pear Park Elementary. Molley and Andy have two children; daughter, Khalil Elizabeth (8) and son Guy Stephen Thomas (5). Assistant Coach Jim Heaps Jim Heaps is in his 24th season overall at Colorado Mesa, currently serving as the assistant athletic director for student success. He is responsible for the academic success of student-athletes, promoting the athletic department and serving as game administrator.

Prior to accepting his current administrative role, Heaps served as the head men’s basketball coach for 17 season compiling a 297-175 overall record and a 221-111 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He led the Mavericks to RMAC titles in 2010 and 1999, seven RMAC West Division Titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances. Heaps was also named the RMAC Coach of the Year in 2010 and 1999.

Heaps coached the first CMU men’s basketball player to earn All-America honors in the Div. II era when Mike Dominguez earned the honor in 2010. Dominguez was named Central Region Player of the Year, RMAC Player of the Year and participated in the NABC/DIv. II Elite Eight All-Star Game.

Before taking over as head coach, Heaps served as an assistant for the Mavericks for five seasons under head coach Doug Schakel.

Heaps started his collegiate career at Central Arizona College where he earned all-conference. He then transferred to then Mesa State where he played forward for two seasons before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business. Following graduation he served as an assistant coach for four seasons.

In 1986 he attended Southern Illinois University where he earned his master’s degree in physical education. He then was a physical education teacher and head coach at Canterbury High School in Fort Meyers, Fla., for four years until returning to CMU.

Heaps and his wife Naoma have two daughters. Assistant Coach Dutch Johnson Dutch Johnson has served as a an assistant coach with the men’s basketball team at Colorado Mesa University since 2014.

Johnson most recently served as the head boy’s basketball coach at Grand Junction High School for 11 seasons with a career record of 165 wins and 68 losses. The Tigers qualified for the state tournament 11 times, including three Sweet 16 appearances.

GJHS won four Southwestern League Championships under his tutelage, and Johnson was named league coach of the year five times. Johnson coached five Southwestern League Players of the Year.

He was a member of the men’s basketball team from 1998-2000. He earned First Team All-RMAC honors as a senior and led the Mavericks to the RMAC Championship as a junior.

Johnson teaches physical education at Grand Junction High School.
